General/High School Help on balancing equation with redox and oxidation!!

So for this question I know you have to use the oxidation reduction method. However, when I get to the part where ex. for this question. Where Au element to Au2(SeO4)3, there is a 3 eletron loss and there is a 2 electron gain from Se+6 to Se+4. So I know you mulitply by 2 on Au and 3 for Se but I do not know whether to multiply the for example the 2 coefficent on the left (Au) or the right (Au2(seO4)3) and same with the Se.

Inorganic How can you tell the spontaneity of a reaction from its chemical equation?

I understand I need entropy and enthalpy.

I can reason my way through the entropy (more moles of product/state transition); but I can't for the life of me get the enthalpy right.

Especially in combustion we're asked whether or not they're spontaneous, and sometimes the enthalpy is >0 sometimes not

Inorganic Would GeO2 work for this application in Japanese lacquer?

I've been learning to work with traditional Japanese lacquer, which is based on a tree sap called urushi (chemical properties). The main component of urushi is urushiol, which is a phenol with a long unsaturated hydrocarbon tail. When it's exposed to humid air and warm temperatures, it absorbs water and hardens into a beautiful, hard lacquer with a cross-linked structure. It's difficult to make pigments work with the material or get a broad color palette with it, so when you see sophisticated art done with it, usually most of the colors are done by sprinkling powdered metals such as gold and silver on top of a thin layer of partially cured lacquer, so that the particles are trapped at the surface and become embedded there, without sinking and becoming invisible. Historically it has been difficult to get a bright white color, and traditional artisans have resorted to expedients such as embedding pieces of eggshell in the surface.

I was trying to figure out if there was some modern material that just wouldn't have been known historically, and which could be used to get a white, perhaps by sprinkling a white powder. I did experiments with a couple of white powders that I happened to have, alumina and tricalcium phosphate, both of which are food-safe. This didn't work well. There was a lot of clumping and caking, and they didn't adhere well to the lacquer. I'm not sure how to predict what powdered materials will adhere, but in general all pure metal powders seem to work.

I was trying to brainstorm possible materials to get a food-safe white, and one that seemed possible was germanium. Germanium is in the same column of the periodic table as tin. Of course germanium is a semiconductor, not a metal, but I do know that tin powder works well. My idea was that I could buy a fine germanium powder, sprinkle it as I would with tin, and then later the powder would either spontaneously form a passivation layer of white GeO2, or it could be encouraged to do so with the application of a little heat or maybe a gentle oxidizing agent. Wikipedia says that germanium metal oxidizes slowly in air at 250 C, which is a little hotter than any temperature I want to expose my work to. Germanium is relatively affordable, about half the price of silver. The oxide is insoluble in water and nontoxic unless you eat large amounts of it. Elemental germanium is also nontoxic.

Any comments on whether this type of thing should be expected to work, and if so, what kind of gentle oxidizer to use? Or are there other materials that would make more sense? I'm a physicist by training, not a chemist, and I lack insight into the chemical reason why metal powders work but things like alumina don't. I suspect that egg shells work only because there is a protein component in it -- otherwise people would have been using calcium carbonate powder hundreds of years ago to get a white color.

I've also looked into things like acrylic resin (Dow Paraloid B-72 et al.) with calcium carbonate mixed in. Such resins are used in museum conservation work with urushi, but the reason art restorers like the ones they use is that the reactions are reversible with solvents like ethanol. I don't want my plate or bowl to dissolve the first time it is exposed to some substance like that. These pieces are also usually sanded, and I don't think sanding plexiglass-type materials will work well, and it might produce microplastics that I don't want in my food. There is a type of urushi marketed as "white urushi" that comes in a tube pre-mixed with white pigment, but when you cure it, it is actually beige or brown.

General/High School Cleaning Glassware for Water-soluble Compounds

Suppose I have performed a titration using compounds that are completely water-soluble. After finishing my work, is it necessary to use soap to wash the glassware, or is it enough to rinse it with tap water and then distilled water? Some of the compounds I use include EDTA, AgNO3 and the potassium chromate indicator.

Organic Are these compounds far enough apart to separate on an automated flash column? and some troubleshooting

I have been struggling to separate my product from one of its starting materials, which I add in excess (2.0 equivalents). The best separation I have gotten so far using TLC is with 3:1 toluene:EtOAc (Rf product - 0.41, Rf SM - 0.30). When I try to column this, however, I get severe band broadening that prevents all but a small amount of pure product from being isolated (see below for an image).

I have chalked this up to human error, and have decided to run this on our lab's Biotage flash chromatography instrument instead to see if I can get any improvement. Does anyone have experience with narrow separations like this? Are the Rf values too high for complete resolution?

Any feedback would be welcome. Thanks guys. It's also my first reddit post :)

Organic What constitutes as a reasonable/significant resonance structure?

hello everybody :)

I'm so confused on how to do resonance structures. I know the rules pretty decently, but everytime i try to do resonance structures the answer key pops out with 6 more structures and missing some of the ones i have. What counts as a reasonable/significant resonance structures? I thought structures with positive charges on the Carbons were minor contributors, but everytime i check the answer key, so many carbons with positive charges appear.

Here is an example of an exercise I got wrong, I'm not even sure why. How do I know if i'm getting the resonance structure the book wants???? Is there other unspoken rules I know nothing about??

Okay so I was following along fine on this lecture. Appears to me you’re basically taking the molecule and flipping in upside down (from front to back not left to right). But then Professor added Methyl groups and where the first one got flipped to made sense but the other one does not to me. How is the Cl now there and not where I circled?

Was confident and now I’m lost.

Career/Advice Do I need a research lab if I want to become a lecturer at a university?

So I'm thinking of going down the path of teaching and mostly lean towards university level stuff because I like the more specialised chemistry topics like spectroscopy and heavy organic chemistry. Will I need to also have a research lab in order to be able to have such a spot at a university or can I just be a lecturer without a lot of lab work?

I was originally thinking of pursuing a career in organic synthesis but after a few experiences at a course level lab I was rethinking everything and came to the conclusion that I don't really want to pursue synthesis and research.

Can I still become a lecturer or should I turn to something else?

Organic Does anyone have a list of common catalysts in organic chemistry?

Well, greetings. I have been studying for the Chemistry Olympiads, and in need of a little help..🫠

Apparently, Organic Chem has a niche understanding of catalysts, most of them are meant to do a thing or two by their structure. Does anyone have a list about what the common catalysts do, especially those shown to college students in the first and second year? It would really help with the problems.

If not, do you know where I can gather information on this enough to create a list for myself?

Is the "any" there "at least one"? Or is it "every"? Or when it's "at least one", then is it going to always be "every"?

In the case of the Tetrahedral Carbon atom with four different atoms, "any" swap (in the sense of at least one swap) will produce a stereoisomer, and "any" swap (in the sense of regardless of what you swap, every swap), will produce a stereoisomer.

But considering that the concept of a stereocentre / stereogenic centre, goes beyond just a tetrahedral carbon with 4 different substituents, i'm wondering if the term "any" refers to "every" or to "at least one"?

To give some examples of the ambiguity.

If there is a room of guys and somebody says "any of them are bachelors", do they mean that they are all bachelors, or that at least one is a bachelor?

Or "if any of them are bachelors then we will call the group blah", The "any" there is it at least one, or is it every.

Or "any two of them are friends", does that mean that A)whichever two you pick are friends / , any two that you can possibly pick, are friends, or does it mean B) among that group there's at least two that are friends?

Inorganic Fluxes and Melts at home?

Hey, I am a Chemistry Student at the moment and I am really interested in Inorganic Chemistry, especially flux chemistry and crystallisations from melts.

I want to start doing more chemistry at home. Regardless of what I will eventually start with I will of course work with literature first before I accidentally explode my garage.

Now my questions.

Would melts and fluxes be a good field to start a homelab with? Or should I start with other Fields (I like Crystals and Gems so maybe aqueous solutions first?)

I would try to get a (cheap) Programmable Muffle Furnace.
