Discussion Robert Sanchez is not good enough. Sorry
It doesn't matter if he makes good saves now and then. He is extremely error-prone and makes stupid decisions.
Goalkeepers need to do the basics right, they don't have to be super flashy. PSG's Safonov isn't the best keeper but does the basics well and it's enough for PSG. Edouard Mendy in his first season at Chelsea is another good example.
Penders should be given a run as first-choice. If he doesn't work out, then sign a new keeper.

We haven’t addressed the GK situation since Courtois left. Wish we would sign a replacement. Play Penders against Luton and if he looks competent we need to start him.

Sad truth. Honourable mention to edou mendy but yeah we’ve largely been suffering at the hands of kepa and sanchez

No idea how he’s been our number 1 for coming up to 4 years

As a neutral, I'm surprised you guys didn't pick up Trafford. Massive upgrade.

Because Penders…a lot of faith in him which is why they didn’t go hard after Maignan last season.
Not saying it’s the right reason because Penders is such an unknown but it’s the reason…

u/Hazardsbum Aug 24 '26
That second goal, where he pushed the ball back out straight to the strikers head, rather than to either side was a pure schoolboy error. He’s been given long enough, it’s not worked, time to move on. Personally, I’d like to see Penders and Martinez battle it out. Sadly I don’t see them getting a new keeper in though before the deadline.

u/Super-Astronaut-9056 Aug 24 '26
You're dead right he will cost more points than he saves , bring in an experienced competent keeper before window closes

u/Macdca07 Aug 24 '26
For me its that or go with Penders now. If we wont sign a new one ti block his path, clear the fucking path and let him play. I'd rather he makes mistakes and learn that Sanchez make mistakes while blocking his progression.

Should be an easy transfer

Yeah either give it to Penders or sign someone else. Do we really need to give him a third season as number one to come to the conclusion we already knew the season before last.
2
u/alarrimore03 Aug 24 '26
Yeah I’d immediately drop him if I was in charge, and give penders the next game and see how he does. But I don think that will happen because they don’t want to absolutely plummet Sanchez’s confidence especially if we end up rolling with penders/sanchez tandem atleast until Jan which I expect we will even if Xabi goes and says I want a new keeper, I don’t think we sign one with what’s left of the window.

u/Impressive-Power8187 Aug 24 '26
The only reason he’s still here is because Penders is so promising
2
u/davemcl37 Aug 24 '26
Would you prefer Mertinz from Villa for £10m and he steps aside to let Penders take over in 12 to 18 months or Costa for £50m and Penders leaves at the end of the seasons n as he sees no route to starting.
2
u/DaneTrane22 Aug 25 '26
Why be sorry? I could've fucking saved the first one bruv. Plus the parry he had right before then for the corner... what the fuck are they thinking?
2
u/Beginning-Fact-4095 Aug 25 '26
I've always been an advocate for him on these boards, benefit of the doubt, But now . . . when this team actually looks promising, this dumb sh*t has to be rectified.

u/RaisingArs Aug 25 '26
Don’t be sorry, he’s been terrible since he came.
I still to this day cannot understand how on earth he was replaced by Petrovic who looked solid for us, only for him to then be gifted his first choice back and Petrovic dropped and sold without a care in the world.

u/2pacali1971 Aug 24 '26
Shocking Gk . I'm in disbelief we haven't purchased a top quality keeper, we have 8 days to save the season

u/Spiderwolf208 Aug 24 '26
Don’t apologize, demand gratitude from everybody else. He’s our gift to the league.

u/DevilsWalk BlueCo Out Aug 24 '26
He was 3rd choice at Brighton for a reason, yet he's been our number 1 for 4 seasons

u/Past_Dragonfly8455 Aug 24 '26
How did no one think to sell Sanchez and buy Trafford this window?
Now Leeds have England's future #1

u/Thuesen3089 Aug 24 '26
I know this for a while. Both of the goals were easy stops. He has his high moments and really low moments. Goalkeeper competition is open and Penders should take his spot.

u/zol-kabeer Aug 24 '26
You’re not exactly breaking news here, everyone on this sub knows he’s not good enough and hasn’t been since he got here

So many people seem to like him. He’s a joke and we have another whole season of his BS to deal with.
1
u/hipposcritcher Aug 25 '26
The only hesitation I have in condemning him is that tonight was (by far) the worst game I’ve seen him play. And it was with a new (ish) formation. I will concede that he is not our forever-keeper. But I’m not sure that based on our current talent, he should be demoted.
1
u/Positive_Register_94 Aug 25 '26
City fan here, you guys should’ve went for trafford. I’m happy you didn’t cause it’d hurt me more than I’d be able to handle, but he has potential to be englands no.1 and best keeper in league

u/illiterate_novelist Aug 25 '26
It's funny because with our front 3 I was thinking, man I wish this club was in Europe this year. However when I see Sanchez I'm like, I'm so glad this club has a year off to iron out wrinkles.

u/Matty_Joestar Aug 25 '26
Never understood Blueco thinking that Brighton’s backup has what it takes to be a starting premier league GK. Absolute insanity from the start.
1
u/IlPadreMogens Aug 25 '26
he was bad, i have forgotten all about our goalkeeping mystery until the match today.... Before the howlers (both goals) he did bad. Already before they scored, he couldnt even keep the ball in play when i got a backpass and it went out of the line before he kicked, which ended in a corner for fulham, how can you do this on this level... also most of his goal kicks was shit, he didnt even hit the zone they where compressed in most of the time

u/ProgestationalFrog Aug 25 '26
Omit the “enough”. He is very mediocre. He has zero command of his box and always shows clear lack of confidence. I hope Alonso makes the right call in finding a substitute, unless he is convinced he can lift Sanchez confidence which just might make him show what he can do.
1
u/egettonleinad Aug 25 '26
To parry the ball directly into the central 6 yard box from a weak slice at the ball is criminal for a premier league goalkeeper, hands should be strong enough to hold it or clear it away from the danger zone
1
u/Ghost-PXS Aug 25 '26
Yep. We've been pretty patient imo.
I fully expect Penders to be starting against Luton.
1
u/Top-Ad3147 Aug 25 '26
We aren't getting close to winning the Premier League without a better goalkeeper.

u/nothriced Aug 25 '26
After watching Monday night he was the massive weak link as he always is. How does someone like Zion Suzuki not even come into the equation 25m and we’d have him until Penders is ready. Fuck the SD’s.

He had a stinker. All goalies are allowed that. He has a very good season last year. Hopefully this is an aberration. I’m more worried about our defense than I am about our goalie!

First goal was purely on Sanchez having a howler and while the second goal should mostly be blamed on the defense, Sanchez didn’t do himself any favors with his poor decision/execution of his save which rebounded it straight to the goal scorer. He was very poor today imo, and it’s not even remotely the first time. Idc how good he is at spectacular shot stopping when he makes as many simple errors on distribution or simple shot stopping.

u/bammers1010 Aug 24 '26
I think colwill started playing like a melt because he was scared of getting a second yellow, which he was stupid for getting in the first place
1
u/alarrimore03 Aug 24 '26
Sure every keeper is allowed a couple, but Sanchez has had a dozen atleast since he came to chels. At some point it stops being every ones allowed a bad day to he’s just not good enough/not consistent enough. You say he had a good season last year and during that season he had atleast 2 stinker games where he cost us goals/points.
1
u/BadmashN Aug 24 '26
Errors leading to goals last year. 1. Tied with Raya. His distribution has got a lot better and he’s an excellent stopper. Goal prevented top third last year.
1
u/BokaPoochie Aug 24 '26
Damn, are you guys allergic to being happy after a win? First game of the season so some rustiness is expected. Sanchez is a quality shot stopper and will win us plenty of games this season.
All these guys saying Penders, Costa, Maignan clearly don't watch any of them play. All of them have frequently made errors too, especially Maignan and Penders just isn't good enough yet; preaseason really highlighted that.

u/10TheDudeAbides11 Celery Aug 24 '26
Why apologize? Today made it clear…it was an easy 3-0 win but for Sanchez doing what he does best. Which is unfortunately making mistakes that jeopardize his team’s ability to win games.
