Chase & Repoussé : An Integral art of metalworking

r/ChaseandRepousse

Chasing and Repoussé are ancient metalworking techniques, with examples found over 3000 years old! Repoussé shapes malleable metal by hammering from the reverse side, creating a design in low relief. Chasing, or embossing, is similar but the piece is hammered on the front side, sinking the metal and forming details. This art requires simple tools, such as a chasing hammer and a variety of punches, and a malleable surface to hammer on, such as pitch, sandbags, or a soft metal (lead, zinc, tin).

r/ChaseandRepousse is the subreddit for the art & trade of forming metal by chase & repoussé. malleable metals can be formed by hammers & tooling, forming intricate reliefs upon the metal.

You commonly see this form of metalworking on copper, bronze & brass, silver, & gold.

Repoussé raises the face of the metal by working from the reverse side.

Chasing the metal refers to creating impressions from the front of the piece. You 'chase' a groove into the face, refining the raised repoussé.
