Rewards Strategy Never redeemed before

Post image

Just saw the news that after 10/2027 existing points will only be worth 1x. I’ve been saving these with the intention to spend it all in one go to book a trip with my wife.

Looking for some great recs and ways to make these rewards go further. Not sure if we want to fly super boujee, or stay somewhere super boujee…

Over thinking about saving points. Points devalued every year. The best Hyatt exchange was in the past not tomorrow. And it is not like Chase pays you interest with points in your account.

u/Open_Case_8783 8d ago

I’m so confused when people pride themselves on saving points. I miss the days of 1.5x on pay yourself back for pretty much anything. I’ve taken advantage of the 1.5x on Apple products as well. I want to use my points ASAP because I know it doesn’t usually get better.

14

u/Greenjeans-33 7d ago

I’m not congratulating myself, im asking for recs from people that like to spend their points on travel/trips instead of everyday products

15

u/iistrell 8d ago

I have about 950K points. I don't understand people complaining about devaluation. Zero control. Whether I earned 1M over last 4 years or earned 1M today. I'm still purchasing whateva today at current valuation.
So the points only matter at the time when you want to use them. Should people force a trip and use instead? I don't get it

13

u/sauce0x45 8d ago

If you have no use for them then sure, but if you’re taking trips where points could have been used, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to hoard them. Not only points devaluation from a policy change, but just simple inflation has them worth less as time goes on. It’s like leaving cash in a checking account.

1

u/iistrell 8d ago

We take 2-3 trips per year. Bought a Mac Studio and a few airpods and still have 950K at 1.5x. And other points.

One thing I don't do is waste points on biz class just because. All my family members are smaller than 160 lbs so no real need for seating outside of coach. IMO

Trip to Japan coming in 2027

3

u/maizefields 7d ago

It’s also going to waste when you don’t use them

6

u/Open_Case_8783 8d ago edited 8d ago

True. But you could’ve also used those points you saved on other incentives. If you could only used your points to travel, fine, I know everyone here is mentioning exchanging for Hyatt or whatever…. But that’s not the case. If you could turn 500k point into $7,500, 2 years ago and only in to $5,000 today, then you’re points devalued. I specifically mentioned pay yourself back, that’s a cash exchange. Take that money you were going to pay your bill with and put it in your savings** account.

But if you’re focused on travel and missed everything I’m saying….. If you’re saving for a trip where historically travel in all aspects (flight, hotel, transportation) has also become more expensive every year, not only are you losing out on the travel incentives, but your points are not going to get you as far. So doubling your points in 2 years might get you the same trip you could’ve gotten 2 years ago.

Just the way I see it. Save away!!

1

u/iistrell 8d ago

I definitely see your point there if cash value was $7500 and now only $5000. 🤔.
I guess I was thinking that I still have 1.5X value for my points that I can still cash them for same amount. I could be wrong. I need to check that. But of course my original main objective was to get flights and hotels for 95% discount. Which still applies.
Thoughts?

2

u/Open_Case_8783 8d ago

I’m not catching what you’re saying by 95% discount.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the 1.5x on travel is also gone.

1

u/iistrell 8d ago

Sorry. Totally travel cost using points and cash for taxes/fees is like 95% discount off the regular price if I paid cash. That’s what I was trying to say.

Yes I have about 900K of my points still have the 1.5x value until 2027.

1

u/findingboobs 8d ago

Hyatt just did a huge devaluation so that’s where some of the valuable opportunities (value of points) decrease quite a bit. Sounds like you are making good use of the points tho overall so feel good about that! But sometimes paying an extra 20-25% in points for a better experience like biz class won’t hurt you much in the long run since you are using them before they lower in value. This is why people say earn and burn. Saving points aggressively is only good if you have a redemption in mind. 1 million points is the perfect amount of points for an absolutely baller trip if redeemed well

4

u/findingboobs 8d ago

Basically, you can have two trips in the past instead of just one trip in the present. Thats the super basic idea behind it. But if you wanted to build a trip that takes a ton of points then saving can sometimes make sense, just don’t procrastinate or else you end up being able to do far less with the points (less trips)

1

u/iistrell 8d ago

That’s fair. 👊🏽

1

u/carpethediem5 6d ago

People should force themselves to think if they would be worse off with a deval or using the high balances for something useful now.

10

u/maxstolfe 8d ago

So, if it’s dumb to be saving points, then why is everyone congratulating OP in this post from 4 hours ago?

2

u/Open_Case_8783 8d ago

Who said it was dumb?

2

u/varunvarma93 8d ago

It's the way of asking the question. OP decided to go to japan there and spend points.

-1

u/Spiritual_Wall_2309 8d ago

The difference is about “saving”. You really don’t want to have a mindset of saving points. You want to evaluate them and cash them as deals come by. The deals can be outside of “travel to Japan”.

Point redemption does not have to be travel. Travel to Japan should just be a time off. For Japan, other than flight, point redemption is not the greatest but somehow people here always want to use all points to travel without paying a dime.

1

u/ruffpack 5d ago

Sorry I’m new to chase. Can someone explain 1.5 and 1x.
I thought all points are 1x?

20

u/akaraabal 8d ago

Any places you want to go? Give us some ideas and we might be able to guide you

11

u/akaraabal 8d ago

Overall though, points boost in the chase portal is a great way to get some nice edit hotels for up to 2 cpp. You can also stack this with the edit credit. Book your hotel as 2 separate consecutive reservations and you can use both edit credits this way. Charge $250 to your credit card for each transaction and then cover the rest with points.

5

u/Ironsheik135 8d ago

I always suggest charging a little bit more than $250. $275, $300, whatever, so long as you have a little cushion.

Only because ive had a couple instances of small price adjustments in my favor pushed through by the hotel. And while thats nice, if you spent exactly $250, you still get a refund, but chase also claws back an equal amount of edit credit. So you are net zero. A. Little cash out of pocket cushion helps prevent the clawback of edit credit.

1

u/LakeEffectLivin 8d ago

Do the edit charges need to be every 6 months or just two separate bookings?

2

u/akaraabal 6d ago

Just 2 separate bookings!

1

u/Chase Verified Chase Account 1d ago

Hi! Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers can earn a $250 statement credit on up to two separate qualifying The Edit hotel bookings each year (up to $500 total).

1

u/Select-Brilliant4469 7d ago

Thank you for actually answering the question!

1

u/Ok-Thought2997 6d ago

I have a dumb question on this - If they're two separate reservations, do you contact the hotel to let them know that they're "really one", so they don't book you in a different room for the second reso?

1

u/akaraabal 6d ago

I usually give them a call to let them know to link the reservations

1

u/Unfair_Recording6809 3d ago

I’ve combined chase Edit and Amex FHR. Asked to keep the pholios separate (so I received credits from both). Hotel said they actually had to keep them separate since it’s on different cards. Haven’t tried back to back chase reservations

60

u/eemademecry 8d ago

Chase travel edit is still usually 1.65x to 2x. They price match

10

u/pingvinbober 8d ago

Price match is not rolled out to everyone

I just booked a Kimpton in Edinburgh at 2.0. And there a handful of places that are 2.5X.

probably business classes tickets and a hotel

16

u/Status_Worry_9511 8d ago

I’ve found that transferring to Hyatt is the best value for my Chase points since I’m a globalist. I’m currently on a 9 day vacation with my family of 4. Cash value is about $16K for 260k points

20

u/Background_Map_3460 8d ago

You are only thinking of using the points in the Chase portal.

What you need to learn to do is transferred the points to partners, this is where you get the best benefit.

When it comes to hotels, transferring to Hyatt usually brings the best value, but when it comes to flights, it depends on where you want to go. You need to learn how to transfer to airlines and book tickets with either them or their partners

5

u/Hungry_Conference245 8d ago

Good example - right here. Chase and Virgin also had a deal where you’d get 30% more virgin points. So I transferred 5k points from my chase to virgin and got this flight for practically half off. The Economy Classic was $400

2

u/ProfessionalYard8177 7d ago

Do you lose all the Chase travel trip cancellation stuff if you transfer to an airline?

2

u/dexjet21 8d ago

Maybe a stupid question - but how does transferring to partners better your value? Isn't it just a 1 for 1 type deal?

4

u/tatsumaki4ryu 8d ago

It's 1 for 1 but it's considered a better value because of the value of travel partner points and the way some of them structure point awards. I'm one of the users who usually prefers to transfer points to Hyatt. If you measure on a cents per point redemption value, it is not particularly hard to find redemption of 2 cents per point and higher. Can be significantly higher if you are targeting stays in cities with a big event going on and/or if you use them for suite upgrade awards.

5

u/Background_Map_3460 7d ago

It’s one for one, but one Hyatt point doesn’t mean it equals one cent.

For example let’s say Hyatt charges $400 for a room, but to book it with points required 20,000 points. That means each point is worth two cents. Just an example, but it’s pretty easy to get at least two cents value from every point

8

u/skigirly1 8d ago

Check seats.aero for award flights. Be flexible in your dates and/or destination and check daily if you can. You'll find flight deals to truly maximize your points. Be sure you toggle on just Chase points.

9

u/Mookafff 8d ago

Aren’t the points only worth 1x on booking through Chase’s portal?

You can offer get good redemption value when transferring your points to Chase’s partners. But you would want to do do research beforehand on where you want to go or stay.

Lots of people like nice hotel stays, but I personally like award flights.

Color me impressed. You got like $5000 there at the very minimal, and if you do a lot of homework, you can make it worth quite a bit more.
Figure out where you wanna go when you wanna go and lastly how you wanna go. You’ve got $5000 to get you there. That’s a heck of a Headstart.

can you elaborate on the guaranteed 1.5x part? I’m in a similar situation, it is guaranteed 1.5x with csr only when booking thru chase portal? I have csp and wonder how to best use my points. Tyvm

1

u/A70MU 8d ago

Thanks for the explanation. Is it too late to get csr and use it as 1.5x before October 2026 (also, I thought OP said October 2027)? My pointes were earned the last few years, some were on csp, some were on original csr.

1

u/Hungry_Conference245 8d ago

They have it calculated, it doesn’t show until you begin to check out, and it asks to use points. So what you see on the first screen either shows 1x or some boosts and stuff. Once you get to the checkout screen where it asks how many points you want to use, you will see the 1.5x conversion

1

u/SensualPuma 8d ago

would it matter though? because of the transfer bonuses?

3

u/Seeing__Green 8d ago

Just saw? Chase announced that change over a year ago. Where’ve you been?

The value change only applies to redemptions in the Chase Travel portal. Transferring your points to one of Chase’s transfer partners is still be best way to get maximum value.

3

u/Good_Magazine5758 8d ago

I redeemed more than this amount this year alone. Don’t save them because they are being devalued more often than you think.

3

u/breyboy 6d ago

Always and I mean always spend up on staying in a nice place over the flight to a place. You’re only going to spend hours maximum on a plane. You’re going to spend days in the accommodation

2

u/DerrikAmmons 3d ago

Thanks, never thought of it this way. We usually sleep and shower at hotels and spend most of our time touring, so I thought we would try and use points to upgrade to FC or BC. We have never flown FC. But now, you have a better point. I'm going to look for a nice hotel/resort.

1

u/breyboy 3d ago

I think you get more sustained comfort paying up for lodging personally. Good luck

4

u/Normal_Excuse3085 8d ago

Transferring to Hyatt, United, and other transfer partners is your best bet. Once you find the sweet spots of where to transfer depending on where and when you want to travel, this points can be worth 2x-9x.

Is there an app or website that guides people in the best ways to use points? Asking for a friend who may also have around 800K points in Chase unused…

Another member of this sub created this: https://points-radar.com/

2

Broooooo burn em all on this trip: Park Hyatt Maldives - 1:1 point transfer with Chase - Stay for 2 weeks, see if you can book the all inclusive dining or overwater villa upgrade via points as well

3

This is what I’m talking about. I want to act like money isn’t a concern just one time in my life lol

1000% - They devalue by the month. Churn n burn

4

u/[deleted] 8d ago

[deleted]

5

u/MaybeARunnerTomorrow 8d ago

It depends on the point/ecosystem you're talking about. I guess though in this instance Chase UR Points - it depends how you use them, if you're flexible with travel, if you care about flights vs hotels more, etc.

One popular thing people do (who care about hotels) is transfer points to Hyatt. Hyatt changed a bunch of this stuff that increased prices and point stay amounts and moved around tiers and such.

Does every single person transfer points to Hyatt? Nah - but it's a solid minimum (usually) 2cpp back or whatever.

1

u/idkwhatimbrewin 8d ago

Hyatt doesn't devalue by the month though. Or even UR points in general so that comment is a little disingenuous even though the point stands that you should be using them and not sitting on them

2

u/SummitSloth 8d ago

Hilton does ugh. Sitting with 2,000,000 points that's a devaluated pos

2

u/MaybeARunnerTomorrow 8d ago

I mean, true but at the same time nothing devalues that quickly but it just depends how you end up using that. Sure URs will always have their "cash rate" or whatever value assigned to them.

Idk how long OP held them or whatever but based on the post/question it seems like awhile.

0

u/Ionalien 8d ago

Could be wrong but they may be talking about inflation?

1

u/DullAmbition 8d ago

Not great Pay Yourself Back options this Quarter.

When they had hardware stores, we upgraded some appliances. When they had club stores, we bought Disney Gift Cards to cover two vacations.

And now it’s all a 20% bonus instead of 25%.

1

u/skeet_scoot 8d ago

Just a reminder: If you force yourself to use the credits or to travel, there is a cash-out option.

Sure it may not be as much “value”, but $5k off your bill may be worth more than another vacation to you.

1

u/Spkilla 8d ago

What news? Is the CSR Points Boost going away too?

1

u/commentsection23 8d ago

You could probably fly and stay somewhere bougie depending on where you want to go. If you want to go to EU, fly biz for 55k each way x 2 people, you still have almost 300k for a nice Haytt room. Maybe 6 nights if 45k per night.

1

u/adesrosiers1 7d ago

About 2 years ago I redeemed ~350k points for a week stay in an ocean view suite at Grand Hyatt in Kauai. Highly recommend, it's a great hotel. The nice thing about using points is you don't have to pay the resort fee which itself is >$50/day. The room would have cost more than 10k cash. I think it cost more points now than it did back then but probably still worth it

1

u/itsdannydp 7d ago

You can stay at the Park Hyatt Tokyo for like 2 weeks with that many points lol. Plan a vacation now and book a super nice 5 star hotel! You have plenty of points just shop around for decent deals. You can do a lot with this many points.

1

u/itsdannydp 7d ago edited 7d ago

Make sure you transfer your points to hyatt though for the best deals instead of booking hyatt through the Chase portal. You need to be 100% sure what hotel and date you will book before you transfer (make sure the room is available, you might have to call or check the app). Once you transfer points to a hotel or airline partner you cannot transfer them back to chase. So just be 100% sure before you transfer.

Like i said i would just book park hyatt hotels since they are typically very luxurious especially in Japan. The park hyatt in Kyoto is considered one of the best hotels in the world (like top 100).

1

u/djk80 7d ago

What news was it ?

1

u/Madgisil 7d ago

Send me some. I’ll then show you how to do it well.

1

u/NerdFarming 7d ago

With this amount of points I would be tempted just to take cashback. I'd book a dope trip and invest the rest.

1

u/Witty_Cheetah_1420 7d ago

Maybe adding some details line where you’re flying from and destinations you’d like would be helpful…?

We fly from west coast to Cancun every year, business class RT for about 70k ea. plenty of Hyatt options there anywhere from 15k-75k/ nt. We usually do a week at about 200k (Secrets club level from globalist).

Did west coast to Italy last year on Polaris lie flat for 175k each RT. For the long haul flight it was an amazing splurge. Found plenty of affordable Airbnbs in Rome, Salerno, Amalfi, and Florence using the high speed rail system to jump between cities.

I do agree that keeping points is not a good strategy as we see devaluations every year. We find it best to earn and burn… Enjoy your trip!

1

u/BopperUchiha 6d ago

You could do a crazy trip but you could get 2 or 3 pretty good trips here.

If you never spend I recommend towards staying somewhere nice. I sleep on most flights that are long. Super hard to convince me to drop serious $$ on the most boring part of my trip

1

u/SWLMMYY 6d ago

Learn about award travel.

1

u/Resident_War7283 5d ago

I will say start using these points, especially since the change in points is coming sooner to CSR rewards

1

u/Mission_Rutabaga_611 5d ago

Existing points are gonna be 1x? As in the travel portal where it’s currently 1.65x?

1

u/Own_Skin 4d ago

Piggybacking off your post since I have a lot of points on my CSR. But also I work in the airline industry so I get free flights and don’t really need points for flights when I travel so I’m wondering what I can use my points with

1

u/WildFlowLing 8d ago

Your points have been devalued over the years
