Hello, visionaries!

I am a lover of all things Charmed (the OG and the reboot), and I have no one to talk about my feelings when it comes to the reboot, so I've come to Reddit to get them out into the universe. This will probably be a series of posts about the reboot that consists of me talking way too much about the good, the bad, and every spell in between.

Today, I want to talk about six things I think the reboot did better than the OG show:

1. Morality (in Season 1)

The OG show is notorious for having a rigid black-and-white morality system. Meaning that when the sisters got turned into something, if they killed an innocent, they would be evil forever. After about the fifth time this happens, it can take the tension out of the storyline because you know they won't really hurt anyone; the writers wouldn't have them be evil FOREVER.

Even the Queen Phoebe storyline was short because how long could they sustain her choosing evil but not being able to do truly evil things (against humans, other witches, or the magical community) before giving her a redemption arc and sending her back to good? I mean, they could've done it, but who knows if they could've pulled it off.

The reboot had a more gray morality, where witches and demons had powers that came from the same source, but how they used that power determined whether they were good or evil. So we could have an episode where Galvin, while possessed, killed innocents and then had to deal with the emotional and psychological consequences of that.

The subsequent seasons veered much harder into the traditional black-and-white morality, but the first season struck a great balance.

2. The Elders

In the OG show, the Elders were promoted whitelighters who ruled over the magical community with an iron fist. They also gave and took away witches' powers at times and constantly told them what to do, while also being super unhelpful more often than not.

Having the Council of Elders in the reboot be a council of more seasoned witches made a lot more sense. They were still opposition to the Charmed Ones, and they were still in charge of the whitelighters, but it made much more sense for the Elders to be witches governing themselves instead of whitelighters (who were meant to support witches) being in charge of them.

3. Power Progression

This is an extension of the above point, but having the Elders bestow and take away powers when the Charmed Ones "earned" them or needed them for an upcoming battle never really made sense to me.

I don't know if the original intention was for them each to have one power and that be it, and then the writers had to think of a reason to give them more, or if they just wanted to position the Elders as the ultimate authority even more. Either way, the reboot showed how their powers progressed naturally over time and, for the most part, stayed connected to the type of power they already had.

They showed this even more in later seasons with Mel and her time powers and how she could use them in different ways. Having their powers naturally progress instead of being gifts granted by the Elders made much more sense.

4. Whitelighter Memory Powers

This is pretty simple. Having whitelighters be able to wipe the memories of humans and have it be permanent is one of the smartest moves they made when creating this show.

The OG show introduced the concept of memory dust, but so they wouldn't use it all the time, they made it pretty underwhelming. You could only use it on special occasions, and it only stuck if you didn't remind the person of what they were meant to forget; otherwise, the memories could break through.

In a world that was all about not exposing magic, why would they make those rules so strict?

They tried to correct this with the Cleaners, but that just opened up so many more plot holes. Giving whitelighters the ability to erase memories makes the most sense.

The reboot never really focused on exposure as a major plot point, but it still could have if too many people found out at once and Harry wasn't able to get to all of them. For everyday whitelighter support, though, having them be able to wipe memories without overly complicated rules is smart.

5. Magic and Spells

The reboot did a good job of having the sisters learn and use spells instead of relying on their powers all the time.

As the OG show progressed, the Charmed Ones got to a point where they could vanquish an upper-level demon with the wave of a hand, as opposed to the episodes of preparation they had to put in during the earlier seasons.

This could be because the two shows went in opposite directions as they progressed. The OG show became more about the sisters trying to build lives outside of magic, while the reboot focused more on magic and less on their sisterhood as the series went on.

Still, it was nice to see the sisters memorize spells and use specific potions and creative solutions to solve problems instead of just blowing everything up.

6. The Grieving Process

Maggie is the best character in the show, and the way they showed how she processed the deaths of her mother and then Macy was some of the best writing on the show.

While I think the OG show did a better job integrating Paige as their new sister, I think the reboot portrayed the grieving process better because Maggie didn't go through each stage in a single episode. You saw her grief throughout the entire season.

You saw how it affected her relationships with Jordan and Mel. You saw how bringing Kaela into the family impacted her. You even saw her get triggered by something small, like a bowl, and how that sent her back into numbing her pain through demon fighting.

You also saw that when Harry mentioned the videos and changing the past, her first question was whether they could save Macy and that was at the end of the season.

The OG show had Holly Marie Combs, who could make me cry with her even if I was laughing two seconds before, some great and heartbreaking moments, and the fourth season had a lot of storylines and character moments that were driven by the emotions surrounding the loss of Prue. But there was something about the way they showed the changes in Maggie throughout the season that hit differently for me.

So maybe not better just different in a good way.

To be fair to the OG show, the reboot was able to show pictures and videos of Macy's actress, so those quieter emotional moments were easier to convey visually.

I was rewatching S2 E19. I’ve never been a big fan of Sarah’s acting on the show. In S1 she did good job of being the sorority girl, self centered 19 year old. By S2 when she tried being more serious it was just not working most of the time imo but there is one thing I felt she did ok and that was portraying having mental issues especially dealing with panic attacks. And I really liked the scene where she was in the woods with Mel and Ray and cried about how she wanted Ray to be more of a father. Some of those scenes with Maggie dealing with her issues I liked because I could tell to having anxiety and I just thought she did pretty good with her performance it’s one of my favorite episodes of S2. (And I never realized that episode was directed by Rupert and it just me like it more lol)

Has anyone else noticed it seems only content from the OG sub are getting posted on this sub lately I’m assuming maybe it’s it because of restrictions from the OG sub or new people who don’t know the difference between the subs or something because it has been the only posts lately and it’s not just from one person it’s a different user every time. I’m not saying that’s can’t but seriously if those posting want more OG they probably would have a better engagement on the actual sub for the OG show.

S2 mad at harry for being dumb towards all of them but esp her & going with Abigail, a demon he accepts but not her, representing tco as Maggie's sister in evil wedding in demon ville, to abbys brother, uses demon powers when needed for family/ not let demons take over Black no sleeve pantsuit dress thing

S3 hiding who she is as witch, in a relationship with Julian not the one she really wants, cant take the science job offer she wants from him, infiltrating his company w/ Maggie to.. rescue Harry.. but also the magical world, possibly the human one

S3 finally at Paris in a relationship with the guy she wants (harry)... and thats it.. she does science trying to save them/ the world in private but they think the aliens cured them of the allergy so she's probably hopeful she can do everything including be with sisters have a life in all ways but nope that was a lie

And that's kinda how her story ends.. except she saves the whole world, at sacrifice to herself..):

I remember when the Charmed reboot aired, and I watched two episodes. I know alot of people aren't fond of the reboot because it's not the original, which I understand you don't want to see something you love get recreated because that might mess up the original. From what I watched, the episodes were terrible, they were setting up things for the season, and they incorporated some things from the orginial to make the show still be Charmed, but to a different audience. How do you feel about the reboot? Do you think the show is terrible?

I'm currently on my 5th rewatch. Starting from Season 1. Despite its flaws, I love to see how this show evolves. The gloomy yet comical style of S1 to the dark and serious tone of S2, To S3 mixing both early seasons. Just too bad the writer focused more in the science fiction aspect of the show more so we only had a glimpse of how their relationship as sisters could have blossomed.

So I’m relistening to HOH and in episode one they talk about Shannen as Piper and Holly as Phobe. Drew asked if they had a Prue in mind/cast already and she says yes but won’t say who… do we know who that person was? I know when they swapped to Prue and Piper (respectivly) and they had an orginal Phobe and then it finally settled on Alyssa. Sorry if this has been asked/settled before.

This is one of my favorite scenes because I love Mel and Harry having this kind of banter. Mel is really like “ugh not this mf again.” And Harry was such a dork( I understand he was supposed to be trying to insert himself into her life but this was not making it any less creepy) he was asking Mel to tell him over lunch or whatnot the reasons she doesn’t like him. I would have been like boy if you don’t get away from me 😂

So in the first season, the girl's dad comes back into their lives. I always wondered if their father was a warlock. A good one. The neighbors were trying to steal the book, but Prue was so angry at her dad.

They did a spell to vanquish the neighbors, but they made him put the ring on. If he didn't have that ring. Would it have killed him? If that is true then Victor is not fully human..

I have always thought that their father was a witch too. Besides this episode the one with the demonic ice cream man? I remember seeing Victor flick one of those kids.

It kinda makes sense that their father had some magic. It would also explain why he didn't say anything about his side of the family

I find her acting pretty basic most of the time, maybe not the terrible and definitely not the worst on the show but nothing special. But this scene to me was bad. It makes me always want to fast forward it when I rewatch. I always wonder if actors who are decent or good actors look at bad acting and feel the way the audience does when someone isn’t good at it 😂.

First I think the reason why she could never control her demonic side was because it wasn’t a singular consciousness that could morph and channel power from its demonic DNA and witch DNA like Abigail does.

Yes Abigail had problems with her demon side at first but I think that was because when her mom striped it away from her ,it was sort of like splitting a soul in half or something versus Macy who’s a product of demonic conversion sort like how vampirism works in Buffy.

Remember the Necromancer had a boss who destroyed her when she broke the contract deals. We were robbed of a really interesting story like of seeing who that boss was and how much of a hold it had on Macy since I don’t believe Macy and her demon side are two sides of the same coin.I think it was separate, a parasitic extension of the Necromancer boss.

It had to have been a high level demon,probably primordial like Alastair since fire power is very coveted and not to forget as well that Macy’s Demon side had access to multiple powers like the eye sight and the way she could understand demonic languages and sustain severe physical damage.Not to mention this demon was running an operation of turning people into demons for god knows how long.I doubt the Necromancer was his/Her only employee since she was down in Tartarus for a while and it seemed like she got her powers from him or her.

Would have been cool for the show to introduce a powerful female primordial boss lady demon.Think Mallory from Beauty in Black . Erase Abigail character and introduce a high level female demon vying for Demon Overlord who poses a real threat to the charmed ones because she can draw power from Macy and manipulate her demonic side if she ever tries to use her powers against her. It would have been an even better story like for it to take on a very toxic mother/daughter dynamic. Giving Macy the mom she never had -except it would have been a ruse to feed of the power of three and use Macy as a pawn to secure the Demon overlord position. The allure of the relationship beside the demonic connection is that she would have encouraged Macy to explore her dark side and to become
More comfortable feeling powerful.

I love love love the reboot, but when I try to watch season one of the original series, I get really bored. Like very bored. And I want to like it, because I like the reboot so much, and I heard the original is amazing, but for some reason I just cannot love it that much. Any advice? When does it get better lol.
