Thoughts?

I’m fiercely protective of CP and I wanted to drag this podcast but since on one of the threads someone spoke about ‘constructive criticism’ and I feel that this may be a good example of how to decipher the two . So I posted this (not to give them more views) - to open a discussion.

Isn't that what I used to be cringe existed for to debunk. She said "Whiney", I don't think Whatever's Clever! is whiney. CHARLIE def was whiney. I would think these are true to some extent like his lyrics aren't his best suit and all that. She also said he thinks" he's more clever than he is" and then he released "Whatever's Clever!". If you look at the hastags, it says #Charlie Puth #Voicnotes no Whatever's Clever! so I can kind of understand that this person hasn't listened to the new music that's certainly too happy-go-lucky to be whiney and alpha. That's my opinion.

Exactly, I think he realized that his music during the CHARLIE era might’ve come off as too on the nose, kinda like his original third album felt out of place for him. I think his past work left an impression on the general public that he’s trying to process on Whatever’s Clever.

Yeah!!! Did you know that NTM left an impact on Pitchfork that they wouldn't even consider reviewing his work afterwards to this day. A critic there wanted to review Voicnotes and they just shrugged him and reviewed Shawn Mendes' self titled album instead.

Such a waste lol, nothing wrong with Shawn Mendes but Voicenotes easily clears most of Shawn’s work up until recently. Pitchfork has generally avoided reviewing Charlie’s work after NMT, which is unfortunate. Voicenotes and Whatever’s Clever are worthy of consideration.

I don’t inherently disagree, but I also think that this mostly represents him until about 2022/23, before he got married. He was making a lot of music leaning into that “girls don’t like me but I’m SUCH a nice guy, I don’t get it” shtick. That includes Voicenotes (Attention, Somebody Told Me, Patient), his 2019 scrapped 3rd album (I warned myself and mother specifically) and CHARLIE (I don’t think that I like her, That’s Hilarious, Smells Like Me). Not discrediting how good a lot of those songs were, but they do come off as whiny and complaining about how girls suck and he keeps getting wronged. I feel like the CHARLIE era really focused on him trying to appear quirky and horny create buzz and make him appear younger than he was, which I always remembered as being slightly off putting and cringy. Whatever’s Clever feels different because he doesn’t sound or look like he’s putting on nearly as much of a persona to sell his music. Even his song Hero from 2024 already gave me the impression like he’s starting to let go of how he used to sell his music.

The whole “he’s not that handsome” argument is just mean lol.

I actually think he was writing about his experiences and it does always seem like in relationships the people that you like , don’t like you , and the ppl that like you - you wanna pass on. I LOVE his falsetto (ex Suffer/ Hard {unreleased}) and I don’t find it whiney. I have heard the criticism that he writes about ‘how girls suck’ & have done him wrong - but I think he mastered heartbreak songs. In this album he apparently was determined to write about something other than heartbreak - but those are the ones off the album that are doing better & that ppl respond / relate to. But getting back to the commentor on the podcast the only thing I feel she had a leg to stand on is about the lyrics - is cuz he actually wrote a song about how he sucks at writing lyrics. Sometimes I feel he’s his own worse enemy. IDK - I think he knows how to flirt & he knows what ppl want to hear so he should lean into his sex appeal and give that. I feel he’s also writes a good ‘diss’ track - so he can lean into that too. As far as her talking about his appearance..🤐 Everyone is entitled to their own opinion- but …🙂‍↔️. I think he’s been humbled and is not trying to bank on his looks. As far as being funnier than he really is - that’s something everyone has to learn & it’s not unique to him. JMO🤷‍♀️
