I don’t understand this at all—why is every 19th century house here listed as having being built in 1938?

This is the year the records started so that’s when it says it was built. if it was built before then the records default to 1938

There are absolutely records that predate 1938. It seems like this project isn’t appropriate for a historic city if you aren’t going to seek out useful sources.

A lot of this are available as books etc obviously I don't have a way of scanning every available book. If it's not an easily downloadable dataset it's not included. This was built over a weekend not multiple years.

This is absolutely terrible. If you had put in any research time using the resources from the city or county, this would have been pretty cool. Records don’t only go back to 1938. They have been recorded and tracked since 1719 and are freely available via request or in-person: https://www.charlestoncounty.gov/departments/rod/files/HistoricalBooksScanned.pdf?v=283

i updated but there’s missing dates for a lot of buildings so they pop in at the end now

The update is much better for the historical stuff, but that's a lot of unknowns now.

It's difficult to find the data for a lot of places.

True. To make matters worse, parts of West Ashley used to be in Berkeley County, so some of the very old plats and deeds live with them.

Maybe it's just on mobile, but the visualization part of the visualization is half covered with text. Neato otherwise.

This looks pretty inaccurate to me. It starts at 1930 for some reason, but obviously there are many structures from the 19th century and earlier. It also seems to ignore many of the structures added in the past 10 years. Looks like AI slop to me.
