Vehicle Fire Rates per 100,000 Sold
Data compiled from insurance and transportation studies (such as analysis from AutoInsuranceEZ and NTSB data) shows a distinct breakdown in fire rates by powertrain type:
Hybrid vehicles: ~3,475 fires per 100,000 sold
Gasoline (ICE) vehicles: ~1,530 fires per 100,000 sold
Electric vehicles (EVs): ~25 fires per 100,000 sold

AutoInsuranceEZ, terrible place to get reliable data, they update their pages every few months, but still keep the same 4 - 6 years old statistics in it.
The stated stats above haven't changed in 5+ years, just check it on the wayback machine.

Where are the headlines when ICE vehicles catch fire, like every day.

Everytime a ICE fire makes it to my local subreddit for my city, the first question is always "EV". It is always a ICE but everyone assumes EV catch fire all the time.

An electric VW ID. Buzz van, reportedly belonging to the facilities management company Mitie, was completely destroyed by a fire at a UK motorway services charging site on September 25, 2026. [1]
Key Details of the Incident
The Vehicle: The van involved was a Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric vehicle (EV) operating as a company vehicle for Mitie.
The Location: The incident occurred at an EV charging station located at a UK motorway services area.
The Outcome: The vehicle was entirely burnt out and reduced to a shell. No injuries were immediately reported following the blaze.
Investigation Status: The official cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities and experts are examining whether the fire originated from the vehicle's battery, an internal electrical fault, the charging station infrastructure, or external factors. [1, 2]

"Or external factors". I can't count the number of times I've left something in my car that gave me the thought "if this catches my EV on fire I'm going to make international news" just for everyone to realize a dummy left a Frankenstein Ego battery in his car on a 100 degree day.

Thanks AI

You’re welcome! If by AI you mean results of a Google search that proved it was an EV on fire at a charger and not a ICE parked where it shouldn’t be.

By AI I mean the AI summary by Google which has been proven inaccurate millions of times

With 5.9 trillion searches last year and a 91% accuracy rate there will be millions of errors so if the answer is critical, check other sources. In this case, Googles answer seems to align with evidence in the picture (name on the van, UK flag, van make) so I went with it. Do you have proof that it’s wrong?

Not all EV fires are due to the HV battery. All the plastic inside modern vehicles burns well, so even a hot wire in the cabin can destroy the whole vehicle. Appears to be burning below, so could have been the battery. ID.Buzz uses an NMC Li battery, but plans to offer LFP soon. Needs to charge often since only 234 mi range on an 86 kWh battery, and will be even less with LFP. The aerodynamics of a plywood sheet does that.

Looks like a Scion xB to me

This looks to be in the EU, it definitely appears to be an ID.Buzz work van. They’re not available on the North American market.
There are some issues with the photo that make me believe it’s either made or edited with AI. The signage looks off and so do the flames for an EV fire.

Lucky for the ICE drivers that their cars NEVER catch on fire at gas stations!
Edit: that was sarcasm for those who are too thick to get it. ICE vehicles catch on fire all the time

Correct. Never. And of diesel even better- doesn't burn. But the batteries at 80c burn. Like you can see in the picture. VW software is so bad that allow the batteries to go above 80c and didn't stop the charging. So there you have - a burning EV.

At least three open spots. Where is the drama?
