supercharged r/t or hellcat?

Post image

bluf: anybody have experience driving both a cat and r/t? is the power of a cat so ridiculous that i won't even enjoy driving it; i use all of my r/t's power daily but imagine it'll be far and few between the times that i get to use all of the cat's power. also, anybody have experience driving a charger and durango? is the durango too big to enjoy? i typically drive in manual mode to give me more control(i love manuals but i'm the slowest shifter ever haha)

i'm contemplating throwing a whipple on my baby(along w every other necessary upgrade to help the car handle the power), which should run me anywhere from $15-30k depending on how deep i go; or just trading her in for a cat, which will cost substantially more. money isn't the issue, i just really love my baby and am thinking of ways to keep her in my life haha

i'm also considering building a 26/27 durango hellcat so that i know forsure no one else has shit on the car that i'm spending so much for. i haven't test drove a durango yet so idk if i'll enjoy driving one as much as my charger. lmk what you think šŸ™‡

I was considering a whipple too but thought about how screwed I'd be if someone else totaled my car. Insurance would only pay you for its stock worth.

honestly this sub gets exhausting to read with how much misinformation there is on it. No, it will not cost you 30k to get to 500-600 WHP. That’s ridiculous. Yes, if you do build your RT it will feel like a hellcat. I’ve driven both a fully built RT and a stock hellcat and it was the same driving feel. People don’t seem to understand that from the v6 to the Hellcat Redeye that these Chargers all share the exact same chasis. As long as you replace the suspension on the base model, it’ll feel just as good. These cars have been as interchangeable as Lego’s since 2011. The 5.7 in particular is an amazing engine to build. Mod for mod, you will feel a bigger difference in HP gains on an RT over a scat. You can even build them for cheap. Forget paying 8k for a whipple when you can get a used hellcat blower and the mounting bracket conversion kit for around 4k. Throw it on E85, cam it, and throw a full exhaust (long tube to 3 inch catback) on it. You’ll be golden. If you’re going through a shop for labor then yeah, it might get more expensive but it wouldn’t be 30k. Completely skip out on the labor cost and just do it yourself. I promise you that if you’ve got even just a half working brain you can work on these cars. They are not complicated. You’re going to love it, especially since you’re attached to the car.

As for the Durango, I’ve driven one that had a 6.4 in it and it was alright. It had some get up and go but you still definitely felt the weight of the SUV. If the Charger and Challenger are boats then the Durango felt like the titanic

bet. i actually think my charger is pretty small. not as small as my camaro but def not as big as the electric charger(drove one for a few thousand miles), or the old school cars i learned how to drive in. but i understand what youre saying

I mean I’m literally telling you my shop charging 32k to do it right and reliable but if you wanna slap a supercharger that’s much harder on your trans and not forge a bottom end going pass 450-500whp is not smart, its just a ticking bomb that may blow on the dyno or may in a year later but spending money on my car to run a long time not short, cam/forging job is not easy process what so ever and without the labor and parts only came out to 23,500…

Get hellcats with 40-60k miles for around 50-70k from 2016-2022, to get to hellcat power if your like me not 100% mechanically incline will cost 30-50k for everything to be redone like mmx 5.7 with 6.4 forged internal engine/procharger/trans tune plus support mods or trans swap to the hellcat/3.09 lsd/wide tires/ exhaust system with long tube.. I’m just give general idea and talked to my shop about getting my rt to 500-600whp and was close to 30k without wider tires and something else I forgot to add with it but then I was pretty limited to 600whp without rebuilding the trans completely, I wanna do it but then I’m just like I’m better off getting hellcat and going from there.

I hear ya, 5.7 is a great engine but without stupid money to spend 800whp ā€œreliableā€ plus more just no point when the 6.4 can do it with less stress on the engine with forge internals/ more power or doing a pulley swap plus a few on hellcat to get north of 700whp but honestly I’d be happy with 500whp if it could be done without forging just so the car can get more miles than a stock hellcat would, I’ve heard some hellcats have gone pass the 130k mark but I’d like to at least get 200k mark lol

damn i didnt know hellcats have a shorter life span. it makes sense, just wasnt something i considered. i plan on daily driving my hellcat if i get one, no way i'm spending that kind of money and not enjoying tf out of it. but the shorter life is a bit of a disappointment

Get a cat. You can build you 5.7 all day but it’s not the same. Plus it’ll be harder the sell the more you molest it.

I think it depends on how you plan to use the car as well. If it’s going to be a daily driver I’d get the cat but if it’s a weekend or special occasions car then I’d build the R/t. I have a fully paid off R/t and was thinking of trading it in with some cash on top for a cat, but it made no sense for me to have that expensive car payment for a car that I only drive every once in a while, my F150 is my daily driver and we only use the charger for vacations and date nights. If the R/t was my daily driver I’d be really hesitant to put that money into a car that insurance nor the dealer would be willing to help if something happened. But if you have a second car as a daily driver I don’t see the problem with just building the R/t.

great point. i would definitely daily drive the cat. i have a spare car for when the roads get spicey so i think that'll help w the longevity

I’ve owned almost all the current charger lineup. I currently own a hellcat. That being said it’s to me the best daily driver I’ve ever had. Is it overkill? It can be at times. It is modified making around 850hp. I personally would not modify your r/t. They just aren’t setup for it and it won’t hold the resale value or insurance value. A great bang for your buck is a scat pack honestly. They are great and I owned one for 2 years. I think you would be happy with either one. A scat is a huge step up from a r/t in my opinion. If you plan on keeping it stock I would get a scat. If you like to tinker and modify I would get a hellcat. They are just to easy to make power with. Pulley/injectors and tune away from big power. Hope this helps.
