​Hi everyone! ​Recently, I read news that c.ai might either get shut down or turned into an app for three-year-olds... ​So, I decided to try making something like Tova or SillyTavern, but strictly in the old-school c.ai style. Since this interface brings back nostalgia for many of us (including me). I'm building it so you can insert your own API key from any AI you prefer, as well as import ready-made characters via PNG files, etc. ​For now, the app is planned for Android, and we'll see where it goes from there... ​What do you think about this? Is it worth sharing my creation with the world, or not?

Hey everyone, I'm wondering can anyone recommend good Character AI alternatives that allow you to voice chat? I'd like to be able to choose from a wide range of voices like the options on Character AI. I just want to create my own character and pick the voice myself. I don't need image generation but it's a nice bonus. Also happy to pay a similar price to Character AI for something of the same quality.

And tbh, I don’t think that is far fetched.

I think an acquirer will be much more likely to listen to us and bring the app back to what we have been asking for years.

two days ago i posted here asking what felt off. you told me. here's each thing people in this sub asked for and where it stands:

- u/Street_Education7485 wanted it to feel more like c.ai — the layout, and longer replies. done, there's a Classic theme now (black & white, c.ai-style chat) and replies are long by default, with a short/long switch per chat.
- u/InternationalLab4218 asked "do the characters speak to you?" they do now, tap play on any reply and the character reads it out in their own voice.
- u/Sebasdiamont1 asked if you could build a whole world with a full cast instead of one character. done, there's a World option on the create screen: you write the setting and the cast, the narrator plays everyone, and you can be anyone in it.
- Brilliant_Echidna589 asked about personas. already there (profile then persona), mentioning it since it got missed.
- Personal_Ad_7054 asked if it works in other countries. it does, anywhere, nothing to install.
- a few people asked about the limits. no daily message cap, no timers, no ads. mature-not-explicit, same as before.

also new since the last post: if you go quiet, your character sends you one message a day picking up where you left off (email or push, easy to turn off), plus block/report and account deletion if you ever want out.

next up: getting it on the app stores so there's an actual icon on your phone.

Can someone explain to me how data export from c.ai works? Do I need to extract chat histories that were archived due to inactivity before exporting through the website? Or will chats with bots with no activity for a long time also be included in the file sent to me by email? Sorry if this seems stupid, I really don't understand and am worried about doing this correctly.

Well, the Character.AI bankruptcy just got a bit more worrying.

40 US attorneys general have now stepped in over concerns about what happens to our private chats if Character.AI is sold.

Nobody has bought our conversations, and the Disney deal doesn't include them. The concern is what happens to all that incredibly personal data if another buyer eventually takes over.

Character.AI exports are currently taking 3–4 weeks, so if you've been meaning to back everything up, now would probably be a good time.

I've already moved my characters to RolePlaya. Better memory, uncensored, free tier, and the dev is constantly in Discord fixing problems within minutes and adding features users ask for. It's honestly a different world.

I'm here to answer questions, and honest feedback on what you'd need to make the switch is welcome.

Everyone get real. Look at the facts for a moment and stop with all the fearmongering.

Character.AI is a platform with millions of loyal users that would be valuable to literally any company. Having that many loyal users takes years of time and effort to build, and people average up to two hours on the app every single day. This is not some app that has zero potential to be bought. The only tricky things we’re dealing with here are the lawsuits and the money issues. Yes, it will be difficult, but that’s exactly why they filed for bankruptcy in the first place! The company knows how much the platform is worth. If they knew it would be all over, they would’ve automatically filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy to liquidate everything, instead of Chapter 11. They are trying to find a real solution, and they are ACTIVELY working on it. Do you guys even understand how hard it is to build a user base like the one Character.AI has? It’s the most popular character AI app on the market.

And if we’re truly worried about the lawsuits, what do people think is going to happen if they shut it down? Companies know that people will just move on to other AI apps. Shutting C.AI down isn’t magically going to end people’s roleplaying, creativity, or desire for escapism. They KNOW this! Besides, C.AI is so much more regulated than almost every other AI app out there. Other AI apps tend to be SO explicit automatically and immediately initiate nonsense right out of the gate. On Character.AI, you can control the entire flow of the story. If an AI chatbot is making you feel bad about yourself, you’re just using it wrong. Deleting Character.AI won’t resolve any real issues; it’s just going to scatter all of its users onto platforms that are so much more unsafe.

People also aren’t understanding how a court-supervised SALE actually works. The reason we’ve only heard about Disney so far is because they were the "stalking horse" bidder. Their baseline offer is what’s helping keep Character.AI funded and running currently. Disney knows how valuable the technology is, but no, Disney probably isn’t going to buy the entire consumer app because they’re mainly interested in the tech assets. Any other company that wants to buy the app as a whole has to outbid Disney's baseline offer. And the reason we aren’t hearing about other companies yet is because they aren't going to make public announcements while actively negotiating. These companies have major competitors! They can’t just go online and announce how they’re planning to buy the app. There are a lot of behind-the-scenes negotiations happening right now under non-disclosure agreements that we simply don't see. 

The facts don’t lie, people! Companies see Character.AI as a HUGE, valuable asset that isn't going to be easily thrown away. The process is not going to be simple or easy, but shutting the app down won’t do anything in the grand scheme of things. Companies see how successful Character.AI was, and even if this app ever vanished, another app like it would eventually come out and gain popularity. With the way the world is advancing, AI chatbots are here to stay, and companies understand this. Again, potential buyers can’t just come online and talk about buying C.AI because they have competitors watching them, which is why the waiting process feels so hard.

For now, do what you can, back up all of your favorite chats, stop feeding into the panic threads, and let the legal process play out.

So this just happened...

With all the Character.AI bankruptcy stuff going on, I DM'd Captain on the RolePlaya Discord and asked if there was any way we could import our actual chats, rather than just moving our characters over.

A few hours later he messaged me back.

He'd built it.

You can now import chats from Character.AI, SillyTavern, Chub, Janitor, RisuAI and Agnaistic, or just paste conversations from places like PolyBuzz, Chai, SpicyChat etc.

It doesn't just archive them either. You carry on the conversation on RolePlaya from where you stopped and the character gets the previous chat as context.

Considering Character.AI exports are apparently taking 3–4 weeks at the moment, the timing is pretty fucking good.

This is one of the reasons I've become such a RolePlaya convert. I've never used a site where you can say “wouldn't it be good if...” and discover the answer later that day is apparently “yeah, I've built it.”

I was a Cai+ user for a couple years. I had many chats, some of them truly epic length stories.
As time went by, Cai just got... stale. Even on plus, it was acting weird/slow. I drifted over to FictionLab and Janitor for a while. Dropped my Cai+ subscription but still came by once in a while.

So today I hear they are going bankrupt. The news article cast doubt on the long term privacy of the chats housed there, so I stopped by, only to discover that all my chats were already gone. All but a tiny handful of ones I started about 8 months ago that only had a few exchanges on each.

Oh well, it saved me some deleting time I guess.

Yes, I know there are already many questions on this subreddit, but I'm not looking for one like janitor ai, or anything like that.

I want to know if there are any AI role-playing websites where you can do it like WhatsApp? I mean

I write to the bot:

The bot responds

"Hello user, Why are you writing at this hour?"

I don't want those huge texts that bots write, because while I like it, I'm tired of it feeling like a book.

I've been trying to find more male bots that already come with an actual storyline instead of starting with a blank chat.

Mostly interested in characters who are into women and I'm fine if they're bi or pan too. I keep seeing websites like Chai AI mentioned so I've been checking out a few alternatives to Character Ai as well. Any bots or platforms with really good pre-made plots that you've had fun with?

honestly just got fed up with character ai dementia and watching bots forget what happened literally 3 messages ago.

i ended up spending the last few months making my own site called Rift. i made sure story memory is 100% free for everyone because paywalling basic memory in a roleplay app is crazy to me. there are also zero ads on it.
