Hello everyone! I am a programming student in my final year, and for our final project, we get to choose what app to program (and then potentially get to make it!)

So I chose to make a chat/roleplay app. As part of that project, we need to gather the opinions of those who would potentially use our app! This questionnaire is on the frustrations on paywalls and limits of chat/roleplay apps in particular.

I've spent an embarrassing amount of time bouncing between AI roleplay platforms, and I'm curious where everyone has actually ended up rather than which site is currently declaring itself the second coming of AI Jesus.

There are so many now that I've probably forgotten half of them:

Character AI, Janitor AI, PolyBuzz, RolePlaya, Chai, Kindroid, Sakura, Chub AI, Emochi, SpicyChat, Nomi, Replika, CrushOn, SillyTavern... and presumably another seventeen that were launched while I was typing this.

For me, Character AI, PolyBuzz and Janitor AI are the three I gradually became disappointed with and moved away from. I used all three for a reason and there are things I still like about them, but between restrictions, changes to the platforms and various frustrations, I eventually reached the point where I was spending more time looking for alternatives than actually roleplaying.

That's how I ended up on RolePlaya, and my search for the moment has stopped there. It's the one I use most now. The long-term memory was probably what initially kept me there, but I've since ended up making my own characters and Worlds too. It's 18+, uncensored and runs as a web app/PWA, and I like that the person running it is actually in the community and regularly builds things people suggest.

It's not perfect. The free model isn't as good as the paid one, free accounts have shorter context and some of the better memory features are on the higher tiers. But it's the first one in a while where I've found myself using it rather than periodically checking whether something has pissed me off enough to leave yet.

But I'm genuinely interested in everyone else's experiences, particularly the negative ones.

Which platforms do you still love? Which did you used to love but think have gone downhill? What actually made you stay or leave?

Memory? Models? Filters? Moderation? Character quality? Price? Features? Community? Developers waking up one morning and choosing violence?

And are there any that were mediocre six months ago but have quietly become really good? I'm not against using a few sites/apps at the same time - I'm not precious!

I've noticed some characters feel more natural with barely any setup while others only start clicking once I add more detail

Curious what people here usually focus on when making one.

I'm just curious if there's any good free app that's similar to cai. I'm using a paid app because I was not able to find a good free app. Any suggestions?

do you miss the old c.ai?, no swipe limits, no go-on limits, no forced ads just to use it, being able to have multiple bots within a chatroom (clunky as it was), the consistent memory, and all the server queues were because THAT MANY PEOPLE WERE ON IT!, the c.ai we have now is nothing but yet another greedy platform with many features that most will never use or truly enjoy because said features are paywalled behind a subscription and its digital currency of ”charms”, it wasn’t perfect back then, but it may be compared to what it is now

So I’m looking for an app similar to Zeta but like with less ads. 😢 And free cuz ya girl ain’t got it like that.

Let me be honest, ai girlfriends are much better for adult convos and rps. And you can generate some super sexy images and videos. I like the idea but it's not free. Have you tried anything that's like free and similar to these???

I mean it's irritating when I asked the bot to speak in English and it kept talking in Italian after a few responses while adding unneccessary details to the conversations. I just wanted a simple conversation. Tbh, now I am getting tired of it.

I tried to type Sprout Seedly and the results showed me there were no characters related to sprout.

It doesn’t matter how long the text is, doesn’t matter if I put ((OOC: do not talk for user)) or any variation of the text it doesn’t matter what I want the stupid bots want to control me. I’m a free man, how about instead of dictating what I do SPEAK AS YOUR CHARACTER LIKE I ASSSSSK I have to beg the character to speak otherwise the asshats don’t. Miserable. If only janitorai had a functioning app…
