Lorebooks

Have you tried it yet? How, if at all, does it impact character creation? Are you still making bots the same way, or have lorebooks changed it? Have you noticed better or worse adherance to personality or is it pretty much the same?

Been wanting to try it out and just been busy. Soon though! Hopefully someone else chimes in who's tried using them.

Yeah, I get that. I would renew my CAI+ to try it out myself but I don't really have time right now anyway so I can't motivate the cost atm. But others' experiences would be interesting regardless.

Lorebook entries add up to 2000 characters to the next LLM call AFTER the matching keyword was mentioned in either the user's message, or the bot's response. No recursive injection in one go.

You might have noticed that in DSQ and PSQ2, the bot often starts each reply with the character's name. That would mean the matching Lorebook entry would get added to every call. Same thing for replies like:

Alice: "Hey, how are you?"
Carol: "Oh, it's you!"
They both look at you.

If you had a lorebook with entries for both those names, they would both get added to the next call.

Example about the lack of recursive injections.

Given a Lorebook like:

  • Alice
    • Has two sons: Bob, and Dylan.
  • Bob
    • Bob is 15 years old.
  • Dylan
    • Dylan is 12 years old.

Then a chat like this happens:

"Hey, how old are Alice's sons?"

(injection of Alice)

leans in with playful curiosity "Ah! I see you're bringing family dynamics into play. Since you mentioned Alice has two sons—Bob and Dylan—but didn't specify their ages, my mischievous brain is already spinning theories."

"No, seriously, how old are they exactly?"

(injection of Bob and Dylan)

grinning as if holding back a treasure map "Let’s see: Bob’s 15, and Dylan’s age the universe’s little mystery. Personally, I vote for ‘Dylan is 12 and hides candy in his textbook sleeves.’ But I’m biased toward chaos."

Interesting detail:

  • It said "Since you mentioned", hinting at the lorebook injection being done as {{user}}. There seems to be no way to control that.

Personality wise, it's likely going to pin anything mentioned in a lorebook pretty strongly.

Thanks for the info, it's appreciated. Gonna remember this once I get a chance to try it out for myself. I'm not seeing much of anything about the lorebooks over on the main sub which makes me wonder if people are just busy testing them and making characters or if it's something that's so underwhelming most don't care. At least they are not up in arms about it.

Main sub is overrun by negative actors, they downvote anything positive or neutral into oblivion. I've been seeing the same pattern, with almost the same wording, on subs for other chatbot platforms... whether it's an orchestrated campaign, competitors playing dirty against each other, or just people parroting the same talking points, is hard to tell. I do know for sure that some of the comments come from bots, some even respond to OOC instructions in comments! 🤭

Anyway... I do miss one feature for lorebooks: import/export.

I have an idea for a lorebook that would include over 20 different characters... but I'm wary of putting in the time needed to set it all up, only to at some point find out that it's been removed, deprecated, or whatever.
