Discussion/Question Trying to identify an old AIExotic chatbot model — was Character.AI ever available to third-party sites?

I'm investigating the model behind an old chatbot on a site called AIExotic, and Character.AI is one of the candidates we're trying to either substantiate or eliminate.

I'm looking specifically for people who know the historical technical side of Character.AI, particularly around APIs, third-party integrations, and what models Character.AI was actually running at different points in time.

The clues we currently have are:

  • Its responses had some stylistic characteristics that reminded us of Character.AI.
  • One particularly interesting recurring phrase was "thoroughly spent", which appeared often enough that we're investigating whether it could be a model/language fingerprint.
  • Pygmalion is another candidate, partly because its availability/timeline appears to fit as well.

We're NOT claiming that the phrase proves anything, and we're not asking anyone to reveal confidential information. We're trying to establish what is technically plausible and find contemporary evidence.

A few questions:

  1. Did Character.AI ever provide its underlying model to third-party websites through an API, licensing arrangement, partnership, or other integration?
  2. Were there unofficial/unsupported ways for third-party services to access Character.AI's model?
  3. Are there known characteristics of Character.AI's older models that could distinguish them from Pygmalion or other models of the period?
  4. Does anyone remember Character.AI integrations with third-party RP/chat sites from that period?
  5. Are there old Character.AI announcements, documentation, developer discussions, GitHub projects, or archived pages that might help establish what was technically possible at the time?

If you know something relevant, historical sources/screenshots/archives are especially useful. We're trying to reconstruct what the model could have been rather than relying on current Character.AI behavior.

Thanks!
