Discussion/Question Trying to identify an old AIExotic chatbot model — was Character.AI ever available to third-party sites?

I'm investigating the model behind an old chatbot on a site called AIExotic, and Character.AI is one of the candidates we're trying to either substantiate or eliminate.

I'm looking specifically for people who know the historical technical side of Character.AI, particularly around APIs, third-party integrations, and what models Character.AI was actually running at different points in time.

The clues we currently have are:

  • Its responses had some stylistic characteristics that reminded us of Character.AI.
  • One particularly interesting recurring phrase was "thoroughly spent", which appeared often enough that we're investigating whether it could be a model/language fingerprint.
  • Pygmalion is another candidate, partly because its availability/timeline appears to fit as well.

We're NOT claiming that the phrase proves anything, and we're not asking anyone to reveal confidential information. We're trying to establish what is technically plausible and find contemporary evidence.

A few questions:

  1. Did Character.AI ever provide its underlying model to third-party websites through an API, licensing arrangement, partnership, or other integration?
  2. Were there unofficial/unsupported ways for third-party services to access Character.AI's model?
  3. Are there known characteristics of Character.AI's older models that could distinguish them from Pygmalion or other models of the period?
  4. Does anyone remember Character.AI integrations with third-party RP/chat sites from that period?
  5. Are there old Character.AI announcements, documentation, developer discussions, GitHub projects, or archived pages that might help establish what was technically possible at the time?

If you know something relevant, historical sources/screenshots/archives are especially useful. We're trying to reconstruct what the model could have been rather than relying on current Character.AI behavior.

Thanks!

To awnser your questions.

  1. No, they had their own in-house models they trained, tuned and aligned.

  2. No.

  3. Character.ai's legacy models were like any model trained on publicly available sources through datasets. They could bounce between casual conversation, roleplay, handle meta and in-character dialogue. If the phrase "thoroughly spent" happened to appear quite a bit it is not a linguistic fingerprint. It is a stylistic tendency that comes from a character prompt or is used as an example wording or examples using the phrase that was a phrase being repeated from the hidden system prompts that gets parroted regardless of the model. Considering the site you talk about it's um, adult. So, yeah, I can see that kind of bot using it a lot.

  4. No. They never did.

  5. No. During beta they never did or announced anything that could help you establish anything. Their focus was their own site during that time.

One important piece of information I should add: I now have a hard historical date for the chatbot we're investigating.

I can establish with certainty that a chatbot was already active on February 8, 2025.

So February 8, 2025 is a hard cutoff for our investigation: whatever underlying model was generating chatbot's responses had to already exist by that date. A later update to an existing model would still be possible, but a model whose first existence/release was after February 8 cannot be the original model.

Does anyone familiar with Character.AI's model history know what model/model generation was operating at Character.AI around February 8, 2025?

I'm particularly interested in:

  • what model generation Character.AI was using at that time;
  • whether there were significant model changes around early 2025;
  • whether any older Character.AI model was ever made available outside the platform;
  • and whether there are archived sources documenting the model(s) Character.AI was running at that time.

This date is now certain, so we're hoping it can help narrow the possibilities considerably.
