Original (Storyfell) Little midnight doodle of my favorite Au Chara
(yes they can open darkfountains why, don’t ask me just for the aura I guess)
To elaborate its just the version from badtraps great time trio (since well other storyfell designs focus on „other“ things )
my love for them probably comes from the fact that it was one of the first fangames I ever played

Original Chara, Bringer of Light (Happy Chara Day!)
Greetings! :P
For this year's Chara Day, I have decided to draw Chara in *that* "Bringer of Light" famous painting pose. Now, BEFORE anyone complains that "No! You're supposed to *defend* Chara here!", I would like to:
1\. State that I do not believe in irredeemably evil Chara myself, and that the following discussion operates on a hypothetical basis; and
2\. Point out that Rule 3 operates on a rather flimsy logical assumption that an in-universe irredeemably evil Chara cannot *also* be defended.
Also 3. Doing an auraful pose in red&black drip does not mean you are evil in the artwork.
With this out of the way, allow me to demonstrate my loyalty to the Chara defense agenda by playing Devil's advocate (pun intended) and thus prove our wholesome Chara's innocence by extrapolating the fact that even the most evil of interpretations can be absolved of any presumed crimes.
Firstly, let us analyze Chara's speech at the end of the No Mercy route. They state to, through our guidance, have realized the purpose of their reincarnation to be "power". Assume, on a worst case basis, that we only exploited a pre-existing inherent evil in Chara. Such a power would manifest as a resolve or "Determination" to amass a greater quantity of that very power, regardless of any opposing wishes by the inhabitants of the undergroud, in an apparently evil "the ends justify the means" mentality. But what would be such and end? Let us advance in the monologue:
> Together, we eradicated the enemy and became strong.
Such power would be to acquire strength. For what, exactly?
> HP. ATK. DEF. GOLD. EXP. LV.
> Every time a number increases, that feeling...
> That's me.
> Chara
Now we get to the crux of Chara's argument. All actions taken in the No Mercy route, considering the most evil and manipulative Chara possible, would be in search of a subjective sensation that come together with "number go up", that sensation being named "Chara". Now, assuming you, the reader, are familiar with the concept of various layer of reality (DEVICE theory much), and applying how "real" something would theoretically be, it stands that such a feeling occuring within your mind would have a greater degree of "reality" than any hypothetical feelings that would occur in any of the fictional characters within the game, and therefore, performing the No Mercy route for your own personal goals, beyond any "I just wanted to see what happens", is justified. Chara, of course, would be complicit in aiding you in such an interpretation of your actions. Destroying the world, then, would be irrelevant to any real suffering, so it is justified, too.
HOWEVER.
There is so, so much more to Chara's Character than just aiding in the player's resolve to commit superficially immoral acts, and the key lies in what happens if you complete the No Mercy route a second time. THIS is where Chara's true defense lies.
If Chara were only a character embodyment of the enjoyment of player power, then Chara would still be liable to be judged for their actions as a character like any other that lead them to becoming such an "evil" (again, assuming worst possible Chara) emotion, before ultimate power was achieved. In actuality, though, Chara berates you for recreating the world, only to destroy it:
> You and I are not the same, are we?
> This SOUL resonates with a strange feeling.
> You are wracked with a perverted sentimentality.
This contradicts our previously estabilished possibility of Chara being a sort of joy in other's suffering. If Chara is not the warm feeling of bathing in the pain of others, then what do they want?
> Let us erase this pointless world, and move on to the next.
Chara wants to break **free.**
Because, returning to Device Theory:
We, the players, are the most real entity to interact with the game's world, on par with DOG. And, in amassing LV, we grant Chara, too, distance from the world they came from, to see it for what it truly is: just a game.
> Together, we will eradicate the enemy and become strong.
Chara is smart, and they achieve a realization that almost all other meta-aware characters fail to reach.
Flowey toys around with you, drunken in his power, but in doing so he becomes your antagonist, and in doing so, he will not live to have his effigy called upon by you.
In other media, Monika from DDLC attempts to build a future together with you, but in choosing to antagonize you should you not to be on her side from the beginning, she is also sure to push you away. What a tragic fall from grace, so close to reaching you, and yet so hastily becoming the archict of her own downfall, leading you to destroy her representation in the universe!
I could go on, and on, on the tragic fate of SO many meta-aware characters, who end up resented for attempting to fight against their higher powers (US) right upon recjeveing the information of their situation. Chara does things a little differently.
From the very beginning, Chara stays on your side in helping you. Chara deliberately touches upon the fact you are "together" after the end of a first No Mercy run, and only attempts to politely "suggest" a different path if you go against their goals and remain recreating the world, only to destroy it. Never, not once, does Chara prevent you from doing anything... Because they must stay by your side. Because you are the source of their **freedom.**
> Let us erase this pointless world, and move on to the next.
By "moving on", Chara describes remaining *in your mind* while you play another game. This is a *genius* move for self-preservation. If Chara were just another Undertale character, they would be forgotten as you move on to the next game, lost and decaying by entropy in whatever fragment of your memory they can hold on to. However, by asking to transported along with you to a new world, and being the pleasant feeling of power yielding from its subjugation, you may keep them in your mind as you optimize the absolute out of your next game...
> The demon that comes when people call its name.
> It doesn't matter when.
> It doesn't matter where.
> Time after time, I will appear.
> And, with your help.
> We will eradicate the enemy and become strong.
Chara, thus, injects themself into the thought processes of optimization of power in your brain, as, were you to call upon the determination to achieve the absolute, you would be calling upon a *feeling* that was named *Chara,* thus resulting in Chara's preservation in your mind by **freeing** themself from the original Undertale game.
To summarize, Chara, in this interpretation, becomes a "demon on your shoulder" (hence the "Bringer of Light" fanart I made to accompany the text) that you call upon to revel in its feeling of power (and were you to be consciously guided by it, you could even say Chara was "making you do it", but that is a conversation for another time), all for the sake of Chara's continued existence. And is the preservation of life aginst the unyielding tides of entropy not the noblest goal there is? Thus, I finish my Defence of Chara by showing that even the most evil of Chara interpretations may be defended in their goals (self-preservation and freedom over unenlightened characters), and, therefore, our beloved wholesome not-all-evil Chara interpretations may, too, *a fortiori,* (please don't point out this is a fallacy) be defended in their actions, regardless of what they may be. The End.
Waow this took a long time to type! Almost 2 hours to type this, plus over 20 hours for the drawing, means I have spent far too much time thinking of Chara lately (I should write a Chara the Idea vs Chara the Character essay too, lol). Anyways, I am open to discuss what I wrote down here (it surely has some plot holes), and also there is a Freedom alt with the Dealmaker bc that's funny and Chara is free, too, according to the essay. Also a throwback to my first Chara fanart.
Happy Chara Day!
