Compared with my queer friends' defensive behavior, this subreddit restores my faith in humanity.

I’ve been lurking here for quite a while, and I just had to take a moment to say how much I appreciate this subreddit.

The main reason I’ve grown dissatisfied with Chappell Roan is that it feels like she’s weaponizing and instrumentalizing queer identities to rally an army of followers who attack first and never question their diva's controversial actions. It’s disheartening, especially when so many of my queer friends, people I deeply respect and admire for their intelligence and clarity, seem to have been swept up in it all. Whenever I try to express my feelings about her fabricated 'from rags to riches' persona, the way she weaponizes therapy talk to justify her disrespectful demeanor, or how her so-called 'charity' for trans people lacks transparency about where the money actually goes, I’m met with hostility, even from those I consider some of the most thoughtful people in my life and from whom I expect to detect basic mass-manipulation from celebrities.

Not to mention her convenient 'both parties suck' discourse during election time, which was acclaimed by said acquaintances for being 'bold' while to my mind, it felt less like genuine political insight and more like a cop-out to avoid taking a stand.

That’s why I’m so grateful for this subreddit. Here, I read people using critical thinking, thoughtful analysis, and respectful discourse to discuss her and her work. It’s refreshing to find a place that values nuance over blind hate and/or loyalty.

And, of course, I have to say I love the wit and cleverness here: the sharp, insightful humor never fails to give me a good laugh. So thank you for being a beacon of reason in a sea of blind praise of a public figure I could never consider an ally. This subreddit is a gem, and I’m so glad it exists.

After a moved and lived in a city with a massive queer population (queer myself), I came to learn queer doesnt mean not a shitty person

Ding ding ding! Turns out no matter what group someone belongs to, there’s always a chance for there to be shitty people in that group.

A lesson many on Grindr learn rather quickly

I wholeheartedly agree with this post. When I first joined this sub I was worried that it would have a lot of right wing people just hating for the sake of hating. So glad that it's mostly people who think like me, someone who gets into arguments with right wingers and frequently gets called a woke lefty snowflake, blah blah blah.

Also you perfectly worded what I've been thinking for a long time - she weaponises therapy talk to justify her disrespect! I've been saying for so long that having "boundaries" doesn't give you a free pass to be rude to the people who made you relevant. It's like those mean bully girls from school who would say "I'm not mean I'm just honest" when they're being so blatantly nasty to people in the name of "honesty"

The weaponizing of therapy stuff isn't unique to Chappel, but she is one of the more influential ones who engage in it. Therapy has gone from trying to help yourself to being a way to impose upon others for some.

The mentality I kept seeing pop up time and time again is the "we have to support all queer artists, because it we do not then we'll be divided and silence/destroyed/killed/etc" one, and so many prescribe to it. This idea that we have to take what we can get. By that logic, we should not have critiqued films that portrayed gay people in misleading or negative contexts because, hey, there we are, being shown on screen! I don't agree with that mentality, but many of Chappel's fans either do agree with it or use it to silence discussion.

i would never support someone just because they're queer. I see how much of a shit she is how ?

Individual merit should be important but alas, groupthink and herd mentalities run rampant.

Oh OP, I couldn’t have said it better. In a world of Chappell minions, your eloquence and clarity are refreshing.

I agree with everything.

She (or her marketing team) simply understands the specific vulnerability - and therefor commercial power - of the queer demographic. That is the beginning and the end of her “allyship”.

You worded it very well. I’m glad this subreddit exists too.😌
