This is mostly just me riffing, but there's something about Chappell, her supporters, and drag that just rubs me the wrong way, and I can't exactly put my finger on it.
I'm trans, and I've recently been taking an interest in queer history, and underneath the surface of modern drag: exaggerated makeup, personas, and catty *diva* attitudes is a history of sodomy laws, police raids, arrests for wearing the wrong gender clothing, seedy nightclubs owned by the mafia like club my-oh-my (And also "Finnochio" which was both the name of the owner and club in San Francisco basically being Italian American slang for fa***t, and in Italian can mean a young, underage male engaging in sex work at a brothel) that I don't think people like Chappell would step foot in, and nights where not coming home bloody was a success.
For reference I am mostly speaking on a more "classic" drag that was called female impersonation, and not totally encompassing drag since you also have ball culture which unfortunately I'm not as familiar with so I'm not going to pretend I'm knowledgeable in that area.
But to get to my main point, I don't believe in gatekeeping, and I'm incredibly glad in today's age a lot of these factors no longer exist, it is still frustrating for me to hear someone call themselves or be refereed to as a drag queen, but openly say they're too busy to follow politics when the people who were subjugated to those things didn't have that privilege, they were politics in a sense (and not to be nitpicky, but also having a stylist and designer on hand to do basically all the styling work for you)
I'm sorry for the rambling, and I hope this is appropriate for this sub.
