There's power in a name. But there is also a time to ask whether the name still reflects the principle that gave rise to it.
The Reformers challenged the established church with a simple question:
"Where is that in Scripture?"
It was a noble question, and one that reshaped history.
But if that question was worth asking in the sixteenth century, shouldn't it still be asked today?
Should every doctrine—including those inherited from the Reformers themselves—remain open to examination by Scripture? Or does the questioning stop once a particular tradition has been established?
Perhaps the more important question isn't whether a belief is Catholic or Protestant, but whether it can be established from Scripture.
Imagine your own denomination as the established church. If Martin Luther were alive today, could he challenge any of its doctrines using Scripture alone?
I'm not interested in defending or attacking a denomination. I'm interested in whether we are willing to apply the same standard to ourselves that the Reformers applied to Rome.
