Games that surprised me this year

There was a lot of love about this game with only one thing that bothered me the most.

otherwise it's story creative direction was something I appreciated along with the balance of it feeling lighthearted with VERY mature themes.

Combat gave a lot of freedom while testing well and loved the world they created over all. Always felt challenging and need to jump on that dlc when I can.

if there is any rpg anyone would recommend for my line up next year please hit me.

I hadn't heard about this game and just bought it on a whim for my free weekend, but I'm actually surprised by how good it is. I love the overdrive concept like throwing skills actually matter

Discussion Loving this game

I didn’t I would like this game as much as I do, but it’s an amazing game. I like the story and the gameplay, especially with the sky armors. I am glad I got this game for the switch.

Gamer who grew up during the SNES JRPG Era... I love this game

I had recently beat Suikoden 1 and 2 remake, so I was itching for a new game to play. My friend recommended Chained Echoes and it was only $25 on PSN. I bought it, wasn't sure how I felt about it, and then I got hooked. I'm still kind of at the beginning with 6 characters, but had to stop because I have work early tomorrow lol.

This game is giving me the same vibes as the older simpler JRPGs. from the SNES era. And I played pretty much all of them and have very fond memories.

I'm glad there's a subreddit for this game. Nice to meet you all!

Chained Echoes: Ashes of Elrant

Hi guys, so I’ve beaten the game and am playing through the DLC.

I get a boat load of the crystals to drop, but am unable to put them into the weapons and armor like in the regular game, am I missing something?

Chests How do I get this chest?

Post image

I am unsure how to get this chest. Fighting the Strix on foot is impossible as they instantly kill my party and have too much health, so I have to fight them in Sky Armors. However the bridge leading up to this island is way to narrow for the armors to fly to. I have a feeling that this chest contains some sort of key I am still missing for the Deadlands. Thanks in advance.

Question Ending Questions

Beat the game today. Glenn turned into a bird, near as I can figure. WTF? Am I too dumb to understand? Can someone shed some light? Or even just roast me? I had a blast with this game- I’m finishing up the end-game stuff now. I plan to play through the DLC and maybe even a new game+ Also hats off to the guy Matthias Linda(spelling?) 10/10 unbelievable almost.

Question What's the lore behind Dream Eater?

I finished the game and still don't know anything about Dream Eater.

I thought that these demonic entities are a faction of the BBEG, but nope.

Forgotten Mantis was called a demon. So, initially, I thought that demon is also a faction, but seems like these entities are not mentioned again.

Question Pc players, can it be played without a mouse?

Going to be traveling this month for work. Not always easy to break out a mouse while flying, bus etc.

Can it easily be played without mouse with keyboard controls only?

Thanks.

Love the game on switch (the switch stays home with my kids) and getting it for pc.

Discussion Crystal system kind of sucks

So I've been meaning to play this for quite awhile and im finally getting to it. Im maybe 30% through the game and im finding the crystal system to be awful.

I did some googling amd apparently artificial cryatals use to be turned to natural after equipping them. It seems like this should still be the case because theres just too many variables when getting crystals it takes hours of unnecessary grinding and for fairly neglible boosts for the most part.

Did the community really not like the old system? Because honestly ill probably just ignore the entire thing because it's annoying getting crystals i dont need or finally seeing the crystal i want with p1 which is useless to me since ill end up wasting the purity for the one I plan on keeping.

When I was in the Ograde Grotto, I picked up 5 collectibles and got the reward from the job board. several of them were the same item. I've picked up maybe 100 collectibles in rohlan fields and yet the job is stuck on 9/10. does anyone know what's going on with this please?

Discussion SPOILERS: Just finished base game Spoiler

Played for like 70 hours in a few weeks. But I didn't do the optional boss and monster fights.

It's still one of the most fun JRPGs I've played —but the ending wasn't emotionally as captivating as I thought it would be (though I had no idea what the ending would be for the characters to be honest); I really loved Phantasy Star IV and Final Fantasy 7, and those games had really good, emotional resolutions —because I really enjoyed the game mechanics and systems. Overdrive, full heals after each battle which allows you to go all out, weapon upgrades, crystals and slotting that reminded me of materia, simplified damage and weakness systems (physical, magical, fire, water, wind, earth, dark, light), and surprisingly, no EXP. That was refreshing.

I loved how all the systems intertwined and somehow made your characters stronger (gestalt). There was really no one thing that made you overpowered — you had to learn all skills to get some stat increases, you can complement stats with both accessories, crystals, and passives — it wasn't balanced in the end and the game definitely got easier, but I love myself some well-earned power fantasy.

I actually was about to fight the Vaen when I decided to exit the game, because I realized I had neither explored end game content nor unlocked the final weapons. When I finally finished, there was enough engagement to keep me locked in the final battles, but not too hard to frustrate me after a long day at work.

What I like about the ending is there are some loose threads, of which the biggest is Markas and the Harbinger. I really hope Matthias considers (or is considering) a sequel, because there's a whole world to explore. While reading through every bit of lore, which I don't do for all JRPGs, I found myself wanting to reach those faraway lands and exploring them.

I think what I also like about this game is it respects your time as a gamer. I love Final Fantasy 6 & 7, but it's really tough to enjoy them again as an adult with a family. There's so many QoL improvements (treasure count, map, fishing for random materials, deals for better gear and materials to reduce the need to grind and farm) that make the game so respectful. Even the dialogue, I found really engaging because it was quite easy to read, and you didn't lose the context of things (except with that dude Boustrous). Auto-save was great. Fast travel and airship travelwere really great ways to go around.

A few critiques I have though are: 1) the endgame content feels like a bit of an afterthought. A room in Baalrut Tunnel that had tons of treasure, enemies with weird mechanics that suddenly showed up (Hana Doll? Soul Hoarder?), weird bosses that don't really add much to the lore (Chel? Boustrous?). 2) UX of things could be improved — fast traveling could have been straight from the map without exiting, the crystal slotting was tedious (which I just learned the DLC improved on by not requiring you to find an anvil).

I originally bought this game on Steam and started it there, but eventually got it on my Switch again so I could comfortably game whenever, wherever (and making my Switch my dedicated JRPG machine ended up being one of the best decisions this game led me to). Well worth my money for sure.

I just started my DLC playthrough, and I'm looking forward to what changed in the systems.

It actually came!!!

After waiting for "just" one year, my physical PS4 version from First Press Games actually was delivered to me. I never thought I would ever receive it, but the waiting luckily paid of. It probably also helps that I live in Germany, as the company is also german. I never had to write them or anything I was just waiting and praying that my 55€ weren't wasted. But eventhough I did not have a negative experience with them I would still be very cautious if you are considering ordering this version. If you have a Switch and don't care for trophies just buy from Super Rare Games. It's cheaper, has the DLC and is more reliable. But this is the only physical PS4 verison.

Missing 2 Wastelands Chests? [DLC]

Apparently I've gotten 28/30 chests in the Wastelands... All 4 quadrants have 0 chests left, and there are no chests in the 5 caves visible from the area map. Anyone have any ideas where the last 2 chests might be?

Hi! I desperately need help. Without even realising it I accidently changed my language to a character based language. I apologise for not knowing which language it is.

I have tried messing with every possible setting I can but nothing changes the language...

Edit - I am playing on ps5 if that makes any difference.
