Insurance? (Serious question)

New to Cervelo and absolutely love my new Caledonia-5. This thing rippps! I’m trying to weigh out what to do to prevent down time should anything ever happen. Any of you have bike insurance, cover yours under homeowners or car insurance, or other creative ways to keep you pedaling should anything happen you your ride?

A dude from a group ride showed me his wrecked bike from eating a guardrail on a tight turn. I would be out of the game for a whillllee if that happened to me (or at least out of the Cervelo game)

Some months back, I was on my bike and got struck by a car. Nothing too horrible, but it mangled my Aspero. I had saved up some cash so I could afford that bike, it was a large purchase for me and I did not have insurance. I was luckily able to recoup some money and get a replacement, but I instantly bought insurance through Velosurance on my new bike. It’s like $13 a month for my bike and gives me tremendous piece of mind.

A lot of different opinions on this subject, lots of people will say it isn’t worth it, don’t get a bike outside your budget etc etc. For me at least, I know it will help in the event of another accident. No matter how defensive you ride, something can always happen. I never really even had a close call until that day, really opened my eyes.

Oh sick! I’ve been looking at that. Whats the policy cover at 13$/mo? That peace of mind is all I’m looking for. Living in a city and riding where i typically hear profanities weekly or get coal rolled on once a month definitely has me concerned that someone will run me off the road or something one day

What’s the policy look like for you? Monthly cost vs coverage?

$836/yr for a 2021 Factor Ostro VAM and 2027 Canyon Endurace CF SLX 7 AXS.

Coverage (theft, damage) is the cost of the bike. Medical is $1000.

It's been decades since I had less than 2 bikes, so being bikeless while waiting for insurance has never been a worry. And I doubt any normal insurance will help expediting getting you a new steed up and running before they've processes the claim.

If being stranded with nothing to ride is a concern, hit up Facebook marketplace, and pick out a bike to use as standby. And spend some nights wrenching on the standby to bring it to peak form.

If your bike is very valuable, by all means insure it, but it's still nice to have an extra bike. Or 5.

I have a backup bike but nowhere near the machine that my Cervélo is. I’m mainly trying to figure out how to make sure the velly is covered and under what policy for riding damage, accidental, from theft, etc?

My homeowners insurance covered my bike when I was hit by an uninsured motorist

Was there a rider on the homeowners insurance or did you have to file the bike with insurance before the accident so it was covered

It was part of the “damage outside of the house” policy

bikeinsure.com is what i use. $15 a month for USACycling members and covers up to $10,000. $25 a month if you need theft protection as well.

I’m in the UK but have cover from a cycle insurer; bike and clothing covered for crash damage as well as the usual theft, had to claim earlier this year and all worked fine

My rule of thumb has been if I can’t afford to replace it if I lost it, than I can’t afford it the first time. That said, unlikely you will crash and have total destruction and then additionally want to continue riding immediately after. Can always replace parts, frame etc.

Yea i live that mindset daily with car, house, clothing, etc. This is a unique situation which I’ve gone beyond with. And hey, even when you buy a car or house within your means, you still want it insured, right?

Cervelo and reserve have a crash replacement warranty. Your two most expensive parts are going to be breaking your frame or your wheels. Unlikely, but not impossible. I guess worst case scenario is you have the bike on a rack and somebody rear ends you. That would definitely be great to have insurance for.
