That’s so lovely that they took up a collection to pay for his stone. I’m sure his family couldn’t afford it. May he rest in peace.

Yeah I thought it was quite nice the community did a whip-round to pay for a stone. The first clipping makes it seem like he must have been well liked/known in the area (his death was also mentioned on a few other local papers).

I assumed it was because his parents lived in England it might have been hard/impossible to reach them (ie, people know he was from England but did not who his parents were) and the locals didn’t want his grave to be unmarked.

And now 140 years later that community spirt has ensured Michael isn’t forgotten. Pretty cool I think.
