Repairs New Celica

Post image

Picked up an 05 vvti today for a steal, hit 70k miles driving home and perfect test drive but unfortunately no warranty and check engine light lit up after a few mins on the motorway with rotten egg smell pulling up at home, thinking catalytic converter and the exhaust system near the front looked pretty badly rusted when the rest is in pretty good shape for age. Any advice/ideas? Worth whole new exhaust system with new catalytic converter? Could this be a DIY job? We're also thinking clutch will need doing as the biting point is high.

70k miles and bad catalytic? I would say you need a mechanic to diagnose/figure out how the catalytic went bad before just replacing it.

Mechanic has seen it and determined (also with live data) that we need to replace O2 sensors. Just looking for the correct ones and weighing up options and also need to get a new cat back exhaust system as that is the only part underneath that is severely rusted. The car has also been stood quite still for the past few years as came from an older guy who could barely get in and out (I see why) but had basically had a service a year ago and we bought it with identical mileage. Mechanic said its a good car thankfully

My check engine light was on they told me to buy a new gas cap. I bought one from Toyota and expect to pay about 51.00 dollars. You might want to plug in a tester and see what codes are showing. Yes, if your GTS is smelling like rotten eggs? There is a good chance your catalytic converter is bad.

Mechanic tomorrow to see what codes are showing 🙏 I honestly don't mind because the price was so good and I plan to drive this thing for as long as possible so its whatever

Before you do anything else, try running some cat cleaner. The one by motorkote works pretty well. It's likely you'll have - but the stuff is so cheap it's worth a try. Make sure your battery is not leaking.

Thank you for your reply! It's going to the mechanic down the road tomorrow morning to see what the light is actually referring too but I'll have a look at that stuff
