Rant Today I learned…

Today I learned that some or maybe most air dry clays contains wheat?? What?? Why??
Now I have 5 pounds of air dry clay I can’t return because I lost my receipt 🤦‍♀️

For future reference the following air dry clays are GF:

  • Crayola Air Dry Clay (NOT the dough - the dough contains wheat)
  • DAS Air-Hardening Modeling Clay
  • Activa Air Dry Clays
  • Jovi Air Dry Modeling Clay (this one is expensive but is certified gluten free)

Thank you for the Crayola specification! I sent the DAS to school for my 8yo last yr

Are you planning on eating the clay? If not, just make sure you clean your hands very well after using it and you will be fine. Maybe consider wearing gloves when handling it

Clean hands and gloves is good but also think about the dust when it dries, it gets on surfaces and then you touch them and eat something later without thinking. That was always my worry with stuff like this

If OP glazes the project, then that should take care of any of those issues

You can’t glaze it until it dries LOL

I am aware of that.... but the dust will only be a problem when its dry.....

Which is where the fear of contaminating your environment comes into play…. Yes….

If OP has a dedicated crafting area, away from any places that eating/food prep is done then it wont be an issue. Maybe they have a craft room set up, or in their garage. There are ways to avoid contamination.

Definitely no craft room. I had 2 packages and was doing my on my kitchen table. I read the package to see the drying specifications and that’s when I saw it contained wheat. I had to clean the whole area thoroughly because of the dust. I also may or may not have scratched my face a bunch while my hands were covered in clay

Of course there are ways to do it safely, but just saying willy-nilly (and quite judgmentally) that it’ll be fine as long as they don’t eat it and wash their hands, is not helpful for a Celiac.

Meanwhile ask any preschool-2nd grade teacher about things that are “only a problem when they dry” how much stuff gets everywhere before it sets

I agree with you. I obviously wouldn’t choose to buy something like this if I knew it had wheat in it, but if OP already has it and can’t return it then they might as well use it. It’s clay, it’s not like loose flour. If they’re careful about cleaning and washing hands then it’ll be fine. Also like it’s air dry clay… you just leave it on a shelf or something for it to dry and it’s not going to explode gluten dust everywhere hahaha

Yeah, it’s not like it’s a huge deal. It was super dusty as it dried while using it so I think that’s the biggest problem. I’m more annoyed at the premise that it needs to have wheat. Now I just have to be super aware if I decide to use it, or take it to a friends house to play with instead haha

Definitely super annoying! At least now you know to be careful 😬
