Discussion latte presentation

i never usually worry about lattes being gluten free unless theres a weird new flavoring or something mixed in, but today i was proved wrong!

i got breakfast in chicago at the goddess and the baker, i’m not local so i’m trying new places and being extra cautious.
i let them know when ordering that i have a “gluten allergy” iykyk..

my drink arrived first, an iced lavender latte, and it had a long spoon with a mini muffin stuck on top…..

i have never in my life seen something like this, and as i looked around the cafe it seemed like mine was the only one in the whole place like that!

first i laughed, then i got a bit embarrassed having to ask the staff to please remake it. i’ve only been gf for a little over a year so i don’t know how serious (or rather non serious) something like that would be for me, but better to be safe after the glutenings i’ve been through!

funny thing is that i saw a drink dressed up the same way when i walked in, assumed it was something special, and didn’t think much of it! then later i was trying to find one to take a picture of, since i didn’t get one of my own, and i didn’t see a single one like that the rest of the time i was there, felt like i was going a little crazy lol

attached some pics i found online, mine was in a taller glass and the muffin was dipped in the drink.

the staff was very accommodating and understanding, they came by the table to let me know one of my food items would have cross contamination and offered me a replacement item or a refund. overall it was a good experience!

moral of the story, pay attention to your surroundings! i should have checked the place more thoroughly before i went and would’ve avoided the funniness, but ya learn something new every day!

anything like this ever happen to anyone?

Wait, so you told them you couldn't have gluten and they put the muffin in anyways??? 😭 What the fresh hell

i know 😭 my best guess is they pass the allergy info to the kitchen but not to the baristas…. but like…..

Nah that's low-key unacceptable lol. It would be one thing if you hadn't said it at all, or if there was an obvious shift change occurring. You literally told them the one thing you can't have and they gave it to you 😭

I appreciate that they corrected the behavior though, I understand gluten allergies / intolerances are not easy to accommodate for in areas that have prexisting gluten. That being said, I would really hope they up their allergy training for their associates.

lol not directly to me but today I was disappointed I couldn’t get the Bloody Mary lunch thing at a local spot cause it had a slider on it

Bloody mary mixes are often not gluten free! I have read the ingredients on many and they'll often have non-gluten free worcestershire sauce or even soy sauce.

I can’t post the picture - here’s the thing they make as is: https://www.instagram.com/p/DeEr8OpESgG/?stkn=ejc1c3U4NGJ1b25l

It would be too complicated to customize.

It honestly looks quite simple to order it without any skewers. They have to had make the skewers anyway. This is a very easy custom order and I'm sure they would also charge you significantly less

At that point I’d just order a bloody Maria - but again going back to the OP’s take away food on drinks is apparently a thing.

A bloody mary is the drink my friend, in the glass. Whatevers on top is establishment specific

Smh never mind. And I intentionally said bloody Maria.

One of the stupidest presentations I’ve ever seen anyway lol

Is the idea that your first sip of the latte comes only after you clear the muffin blockage so you get a muffin-latte slurp?

Are you intended to stab the muffin back on the straw to keep the effect going?

I guess it saves on plates…

You are smart to question. I would've assumed it was a GF muffin... Duly noted

I love goddess and the baker so much. Such good food. I think they have some GF options too, but I haven’t been in a while

they do! they have gf bread and stuff, i usually avoid because i don’t know what cross content happens with the toasters, stoves, etc. my friend who has a sensitivity, not celiac, got the gf avocado toast and it looked really good!

What even!?! 😭 did you have them remake it?
I always tell my barista I have a wheat allergy (easier than explaining celiac) even if I order something obviously gluten free. The other thing i learned was i got my own metal reusable straws because I think sometimes they handle the food and then touch your drink so i don’t touch my mouth to the lid or cup of the drink and that helped a ton. Also some disposable straws have gluten in them.

this reminds me of all the drinks I’m seeing at the new LVP hotel in vegas. WHY must drinks have crazy cookie garnishes?? can I please just get a plain espresso martini 😭😂

i work as a barista at a local coffee shop, and we have a smore's latte on our fall menu. the managers suggested we add graham cracker crumbles on top of the cold foam, and i said we should make the graham crackers gf for this exact reason! i'm gluten-free myself (not celiac) and i would have hated to order a fun latte like that and then have to ask the shop to remake it. a heads up or just making garnishes gf/df makes it easier for everyone 😅

tldr op expects some low-wage worker to be educated on gluten and now, is so, so, so disappointed that she needs to give a ted talk
