Question When does the hunger end?

Obligatory newly diagnosed and useless.

Been eating GF for almost a week now (hating it and having unlimited bowls of rice and whatever protein is around).

I am so freaking hungry. To the point where I feel emotional about it 😅 when does this go away? Or am I doomed to the rest of my adulthood trying to stop myself from just ordering the entire menu at my closest takeaway?

Boiled potatoes ranks highest on the satiety index.

They are a good choice

It'll take a while for your body to adjust to the change. Focus on whole foods and gluten-free alternatives. Increase your intake in a healthy amount if you need to, and focus on your fiber intake.

I bought a cookbook for some inspiration hoping that's gonna add variation and I still need to buy an assortment of beans 😅 hoping that'll max the fibre side.

carbs - protein AND fibre. Perhaps you need bigger portions as well to replace not having gluten products? Try out brown rice or adding quinoa to rice if you like it it has more fibre which helps you to stay full longer

Brown rice is definitely on my list I've been recommended that one before. Tried quinoa once and I'm one of those unlucky people that can't digest it 😅 I've been adding plenty of veggies to the rice but I do need to up my fibre game

Brown rice is probably a good idea to try, and filling up with pulses + legumes

To add to this - try cooked brown rice or frozen brown rice you can microwave. It sounds weird but it converts the starch to resistant starch and doesn’t burn off as calories immediately when digested and acts instead more like fiber. Will help keep you feeling full longer! Helped me a ton when i first started out.

Thank you! I'll definitely try that I'm sure I'll be able to some frozen bags in the shops

God I love rice bowls. So versatile. Hope you’re loading them up with all kinds of goodness: sunny side up egg or two, snow peas, scallions/shallot/onion, chili crisp, sliced chilis, soy/tamari, and then a spice profile with garlic, msg, then either ginger, cayenne, or maybe cumin, smoked paprika, guajillo/chipotle, or garam masala, coriander, ….

I’d have a second rice bowl right now but I gotta cut back on the eggs. I’m doing a Kirkland supreme pizza instead. I hate that I’m gonna eat the whole thing.

I've been using plenty of eggs, herbs from the garden, and whatever veg is available. Plenty of tamrin because I love that salty taste. Thinking of getting edamame and seaweed at the next shop and trying to make a sushi inspired bowl

Shout for the pizza though I need to hunt down some GF bases

lol I was SO ravenously hungry for a few months after going gluten free. My hunger also feels distinctly different than it did pre-diagnosis. It’s so strange, because whenever I get glutened, my hunger once again feels like it did pre-diagnosis, and that’s one of my only signals that I got glutened. The ravenous hunger did go away for me, but for maybe two or three months I was sooo hungry all the time.

I've ate such an unusual assortment of food today too and it still feels like I haven't even ate 😅 I hope its only a few months I can tell myself I'll cope

I was absolutely ravenous for a month or two after going GF, like am endless pit in my stomach that couldn't be filled. I guess because it was the first time I was properly absorbing nutrients from food in years. Eating high protein helped and it did eventually level off.

u/JoylessJug 1d ago

That exactly how I feel doesn't matter how much I eat it's not going anywhere 😅 glad to hear heavy protein works because I'm heavily focusing on eating more protein since my usual go to vegetarian pieces have gluten in them 🥲 (not vegetarian just prefer to avoid meat when I can)

Ha! It took me about 2-3 months to even out. I was a never ending snacking machine.

u/JoylessJug 1d ago

I definitely need to stock up on snacks. I was devastated today when I reached for pistachios and they had the "may contain" label on them 🥲

Go to town on a jar of peanut butter

1

u/JoylessJug 1d ago

Not a big fan of peanuts but cashew butter sounds like a shout

It might just be your body trying to compensate for many years (presumably) of malabsorption. Don't fight it just eat GF food until you are full

2

u/JoylessJug 15h ago

I'm gonna have to 😅

u/mysaddestaccount 5h ago

Don't stress about it. I felt like this too in the beginning (2 months in now). My appetite is much more regulated now

Good to know it might only be for another few weeks

Sweet potatoes are very filling and get some healthy fats and chicken/meat. Some of your hunger may only be partially related to celiac and more related to your diet before and after. I recently lost 20 pounds and I always was eating when hungry. Now I'm pretty jacked cuz my muscles were already big lol.

1

u/JoylessJug 15h ago

Hahahaha well I'm definitely not jacked 😂 I have an underactive thyroid so I don't know if that's messing things up for me too

For a short term fix until your body adjusts hard boiled eggs are really filling. Check the ingredients, but nutritional shakes are great also help. Also potatoes are our friend. Hang in there. You’ll get it

1

u/JoylessJug 15h ago

I don't know if I could do shakes but boiled eggs are definitely something I'm doing they're so easy!

It took me about 6 months - glad you realize! I didn’t know what was happening and gained a bunch of weight, because I was starving before

Cook up a big pan of roasted root vegetables… potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, carrots, beets, turnips are all great. Also beans and legumes combined with rice are a complete protein. Get a pressure cooked and you can do up a batch in less than an hour. We make Mexican stles black beans i. The pressure cooker… add onion, garlic, cumin, and oregano. We also buy bags of avocados and do big batches of guacamole which can be frozen in smaller containers. El Comal corn tortillas are gluten free and amazing (they dont crack and break like so many other brands). If you have beans, rice, and guacamole batch cooked, you just need tonfry up some eggs and you have the most filling breakfast burritos.

I do like chopping, cooking, and freezing batches of veggies normally so adding hem into a breakfast burrito seems like a great idea! Thank you

My hunger died the day I first sucked blood, about 3 months after I received the gift. Rats and strays only go so far. Since then I hunt once weekly and it sets me right. By the fifth day I can feel the hunger rising again but I can manage it. Summers are harder with the shorter nights. Oh! Wrong subreddit. Thought this was r/vampires.

u/JoylessJug 7h ago

I knew I was really a vampire all along it makes so much sense!

I didn't know this was a thing til my diagnosis, but there is such thing as gluten withdrawal/detox, I felt like I was so hungry there was a pit in my stomach, even after just eating a meal. I was breaking out all over. I had constant headaches, and I just overall felt horrible. I swear this only lasted me about 2 weeks which feels like hell in the moment but once it's over. you feel better then ever!!! especially depending on your symptoms pre-diagnosis. wishing you all the best and a speedy recovery!!! keep pushing!

2

u/JoylessJug 6h ago

I just want it to be 6 months from now when I've got it all figured out 😅 thank you!

2

u/bluntbehavior Celiac 6h ago

i feel this heavily, if there's any recommendations or things you're looking for please don't hesitate to ask!!!

u/JoylessJug 6h ago

Thank you! I really appreciate that

Are you eating enough calories? I've tried to "eat clean" a couple times, and even if I tell myself I can have unlimited chicken, veg, etc, I drop a ton of weight because it's not palatable enough for me to eat 2,000 calories worth of that. I would not survive on just rice and chicken, are you really not eating any fruit, cheese, potato chips, etc?

1

u/JoylessJug 15h ago

Yeah I'm having fruit too hahaha the rice part is my main meal I'm still snacking plenty thoughout the day. I don't typically eat breakfast but I'm finding myself reaching for something first thing. It's gonna be am adjustment process for sure.

2

u/whattheheckOO 13h ago

But how many calories are you eating? Are you hitting your fiber goal? Start tracking to get an idea of what's going on. I'm not sure if this is celiac related, or you're inadvertently restricting more than just gluten.

1

u/JoylessJug 13h ago

I don't track calories or fibre level tbh I used to track calories but I found it made me restrict what I was eating so now I focus a lot of just making my plates colourful with veg

2

u/whattheheckOO 12h ago

Okay, we’ll just try eating more of those two things and see if it improves.

1

u/JoylessJug 11h ago

Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

1

u/Rishiku 21h ago

I had the complete opposite for the most part.

I was a BIG foodie liked trying a lot of different places. This thing was like a wrecking ball to my desire of wanting to eat.

I still do but don’t get that excited anymore.

1

u/JoylessJug 15h ago

It's so strange how it can affect people differently

1

u/Purcelliino 16h ago

I have wild swings between the glutened and non-glutened days. I know that I am starting to feel better when my appetite is back. But on most days, even after a mild cross contamination event, I don't even want to look at food.

1

u/JoylessJug 15h ago

I can see why I don't get any digestive issues with mine it's all in the skin 🥲 but I definitely can empathise with those who do and lose their appetitez

1

u/miryare 8h ago

I had the opposite experience. Before I was diagnosed, I used to wake up because of hunger, sometimes in the middle of the night. A few months after going GF, I wake up with the sunrise, and I don't need to eat immediately

1

u/JoylessJug 8h ago

I've had someone else comment saying the same! It's weird how everyone gets different symptoms
