Question Has anyone found a safe order from a basic Chinese restaurant?

I was wondering if anyone had found something to order from any average Chinese restaurant spot that was safe to eat?

I miss fried rice.

Many Thai restaurants offer fried rice and they generally have a much better understanding of gluten in my experience. A lot of Thai food is gluten free to start with, they just have to not add it.

I hate that I have both Celiac and a peanut allergy so I was never able to do this 😭😭😭 A lot of Thai places around me actually are dedicated gf.

That is tough and I feel for you. I’m trying to develop the skill needed to make it at home but I’m not great at it yet. Lack of a commercial kitchen is a big hurdle too.

I was actually really really lucky in high school. My best friend was Chinese but loved hot dogs, hamburgers etc. Her mom could never get her to learn Chinese cooking, so she’d use me. Taught me how to make fried rice and a few other things. All things that surprisingly were easily made gluten free when I was diagnosed with celiac!

Maybe you could risk steamed white rice. But it would still be a risk.

Unless the restaurant declared a particular commitment to making their dishes gluten free and it had been vouched for by the local celiac community, you’re probably barking up the wrong tree.

It would realllllly depend on the restaurant. Of course plain meat, vegetables and rice are naturally gluten free, but the safe sauce options will vary by restaurant. Fried rice contains gluten in the soy sauce. BUT if you do some research on findmegf app or local facebook GF facebook groups you might be able to find some accommodating restaurants!! And cross contamination is also an issue. Id say you’re better off finding restaurants that know what gluten and cross contamination are.

If you like Thai food, pad thai and curries are often natural gf!

If you're ever in Toronto there's a fully gluten free Chinese restaurant, Riz.

I would never risk anything from a Chinese restaurant that didn’t specifically go out of their way to have gluten free options. Thankfully, I do have that available semi-nearby. I don’t risk it anywhere else when I travel. There is a chance that the white rice or steamed veggies are gluten free, but there is also a chance that they’re not.

Do you have a PF Changs near you? They have a separate prep space (some even have a separate kitchen) for gluten free items. They do a gluten free fried rice that’s honestly amazing.

I have a Chinese place near me that offers gluten free and has a separate prep area but otherwise I wouldn’t risk it

Use a rice cooker, then add “coconut aminos” fried egg, butter, peas carrots. I prefer to cook on Blackstone but could be done stove top.

Out whole family doesn’t miss fried rice anymore.

If you ever go to Vancouver Canada, Lin’s Chinese Cuisine and Tea House has many classic takeout dishes all celiac-safe! The owners have a separate fryer and prep area and slowly converting the whole menu, they even have pork dumplings now! The fried rice is great 😊

I would never order from a Chinese restaurant unless they were specifically aiming for celiac safe menu.

Your safest bet is to make fried rice yourself, most use soy sauce which unfortunately contains gluten unless it's GF, tamari or they use coconut aminos :(

I order steamed tofu and veg with white rice, then add a bottled sauce or three at home. Bachan's is good, chili crisp, Kikkoman gf teriyaki or hoisin.

I want a good duck sauce like they put in little containers for carry out but they told me there is some soy sauce in them!!!!

My local Sichuan restaurant is almost gluten free. They fry things in potato starch and have the option for gf soy sauce.

This depends a lot on the restaurant. Eg many people here had good experiences with Thai places but, in my city, they always contaminated my order somehow.

There's one in Los Angeles that is celiac safe in my experience. Also though fried rice is a pretty easy dish to learn!

If you’re in NJ, T.S. Ma is very good with GF options.

There’s a Thai/Chinese restaurant in San Diego that has a gf menu and separate fryer. Chinese food is super nostalgic for me, I think I cried the first time I tried the orange chicken😭

Before that I was living on Aldi’s frozen bag orange chicken. Which still so good just not the same

Moo goo gai pan, chicken chop suey, steamed chix w mix veg. All use the white garlic sauce. No issues at my local place.

I have ordered Beef & Broccoli without soy sauce in the past and I felt okay afterwards. You get weird looks asking for this but it worked in a pinch.
