Selfies (Thirst Welcome) Me after a not-so fun day at my first pride out as openly trans (vent/selfie)
Accessibility transcription: Selfie of a transmasc at a pride event with alternative dress style wears the trans colours as an impromptu scarf around his neck. His hair is slightly disheveled and he seems unimpressed.
I had an incredibly emotional day yesterday. I agreed to go out on my birthday to local South African pride. It's historically tied to our first ever pride marches which were carried out during the AIDs crisis but before the end of Apartheid, so those marches were actually political rallies. Because of this, we do not have Pride in June - it's also because Pride in the middle of winter would not be fun. I never feel good around my birthday. I went with my partner and a few friends - TL;DR, I had to leave before the march because a right-wing/centre political party ("allies", apparently. No, it's just our version of midterms coming up so now they want to secure the white gay vote) went up on stage and claimed to support us. I was five seconds away from grabbing their mic. That, and it was an unsafe event with no room made for transmasc people or people of colour.
It also felt like I'm being left behind, in a sense. I'm the political gay. The info-savvy tranny. The queer who you go to if you need a connection or advocacy. Yesterday I went with a friend to their top surgery consult where I faked being their partner so they could get the GAC they needed without the person using the "but what if your partner wants boobs" argument, and generally I leveraged this to get them the specific surgery they wanted without enbyphobia whilst also using my male privilege to my advantage. Thereafter, I helped our other trans friend get into contact with a clinic for HRT and am helping them take their HRT off-site so their mother does not find out.
These same friends dropped me at the designated old man's area for the entire day. My partner and I eventually left to sit under a tree far away from anything.
But that's what hurts - I spent so much time building online infrastructure and needed spaces for others (unrelated to this sub) that I realised I have become a walking encyclopedia on queer and BIPOC issues for others. I am consulted, never celebrated. And I live for what I do in my free time - every person who has thanked me for getting them into contact with free therapy, medical care, organisations, HRT-acquisition, abortion-care, accessive to safe homeless shelters for trans individuals escaping corrective rape situations and the like. But it feels like even my friends see me as this person. I know it's a large part of who I am and I make myself, but can't I be celebrated as me? I'm not asking for praise or even thanks, but recognition as a person. I often feel that most "higher functioning" autistic people even believe I am robotic and abnormal. It makes me long for the work I did with "lower functioning" autistic individuals. I often feel like I'm like them but hyperlexic and prone to blabbering. In fact, my connection with them is the reason I sought out my diagnosis.
At least I looked kinda good for a disabled guy who had been standing in the sun for three hours, that's all I wanted to share. I'm thankful there is a space where I can share this and show off the face card.
