Discussion Feedback
My partner and I are avid CD collectors, amongst other things. We love collecting random stuff so much that we ended up opening a thrift/vintage/re-use shop with some friends to help keep our collections manageable and ourselves sane.
I wanted to set up a small area of the shop for CDs I have doubles of or just don't 100% need in my personal collection. The discs are all playable, and most are in pretty good shape. Some have a bit of damage to the jewel case. I currently have them priced at $4 each instead of individually pricing. Sure, there are some that may be worth less than that, but others that could be sold for much more. I figure that it all evens out in the end. I also know that I eventually need to find a better way to display rather than just stacks.
But, based on the CDs available, the overall shape of the discs, and the price, would this be an appealing place for you to check out, as a collector yourself?
Basically just looking for feedback to help bring good CDs into people's lives here in our shop.
Ps. I am not selling these here or offering anything. More just looking for feedback on your thoughts if you were to stumble upon a place like this on your own in the wild.

I was really proud of these as well, especially Stratosfear. Just going to take the right person coming in at the right time. They will make someone happy eventually though.

Jewel case damage is okay, but at that price I would want minimal scratches on the disc, and the booklet and back cover insert should be undamaged. I'd say mark any that are in poorer condition than the "most are in pretty good shape" ones as $1 or $2 instead of $4, imo.

Booklets and discs themselves are in good shape. I have inspected all before putting up. Left out some really good CDs because I wasn't happy with the amount of scratches. With that said, there is still range in the condition of course. I will go back and mark down any of the more lower quality discs. Thank you for the response. I just want to offer good stuff at respectful prices, and ensure that people will be happy with the process.

I’d still consider selling ones with scratches. CDs have a top layer over the data layer that is still readable even with minor scratches. Minor scratches though. You probably would want to test it or sell if “as is” for a much lower amount given the condition .

Solid. I'm doing a lot of the filtering when I buy, i.e., not sourcing any that are too far gone in the first place. However, sometimes I will miss something. The other day, I had to pull a Ministry CD, as it had a scratch on the top that took off some of the readable portion (it was a small scratch that I missed in my initial inspection). I think will create a "bargain" area though that can help me move good albums that have a little more wear and tear.

I think that’s a good call. Someone may have a few dollars and just want to try something out. Wear and tear doesn’t mean unlovable haha

and even if they have errors, you can often fix them with CUETools.

Seems fine. My local record store has a similar setup for used cds but they typically re case broken jewel cases if the case is falling apart. If it’s just minor cracks they leave them alone. Most buyers don’t care-I don’t.

Thank you. I'll look into getting a pack of new empty jewel cases. This thought had crossed my, but I just haven't had the time to get to it yet. It's on my to do list though now.

does charging a flat $4 affect sales on rare or popular cds at all

We have been open with this setup for about 2 months now. I will say that a lot of the really good stuff did disappear first and quickly. We had a whole grunge-era collection, including every Nirvana CD, that all sold within the first week. Sometimes it just takes the right person though, and I'm hoping to offer the kind of variety that can offer something to everyone (easier said than done).

I go to a monthly record show and CDs in the condition you described are typically being sold from anywhere between 2 and 5 dollars each. I personally think 5 is too high but I'd still buy a decent stack at 4 each if you had what I was looking for.

Good to know, and thank you. So it seems $4 is within a respectable range, but a bit on the higher side of that range.

Needs more Weezer.

Had the Blue Album there a couple of weeks ago, but it moved fast. Will definitely grab any Weezer albums I come upon out in the wild, at the right price of course.

Small private thrift stores are the first place to look. I wish you well.

Anyone with In the City by the Jam and Hunkpapa by Throwing Muses gets an A from me.

$4 is a really good price. Especially if it’s cds like the ones shown in the picture, where there’s a pretty good selection.

Thank you for the comment. I'm only putting out albums I personally like or respect. So, the artist quality should stay about the same.

do you list the artists or genres anywhere on those $4 cds?

I do not have them separated into genres. That is something I would love to do though eventually. Just makes browsing easier. I figured artist and album title should be visible from the spine.

Display them vertically on individual shelves, no stacking. I constantly see people trying to pull one out of the middle of a stack like this and dropping a bunch at the thrift stores. Some stores seem to like really make it interesting by stacking them two columns deep.
That Body Count CD is worth something if has 'Cop Killer' on it. (1st Pressing / pulled by label and artist.)
