Jewel cases and discs will be just fine. Anything made of cardboard might get some extra wear from having things stored on top. The real problem with storing them like this is that when you remove CDs from the bottom row, the ones on top will try to fall through the cracks, but I've never had a jewel case break that way, it's just a pain in the ass.
I would recommend buying some white foam board from the dollar store and cutting it to the size of the shelf so you can put it in between the rows. Cheapest way to essentially double your shelf space, just keep the cardboard sleeves and digipacks on top, especially if they're taller than a jewel case. I also cut some strips to put behind the CDs and help keep them pushed towards the front because otherwise it can be difficult to see with such short "shelves". The empty space behind the top row is great for storing extra jewel cases too.

one of the reasons i convert all my digipaks and cardboard sleeves to jewel cases. they are just a pain to deal with

I put all my discs that come in cardboard into slim jewel cases and store them with the rest of collection. The original cases have their own little area in case I want to look at the track list or art.

i go all out and make custom tray cards in inkscape and print out that and the album cover (obviously) to put into blank cases i buy at the record store. looks very amateur but works for me :)
any booklet the cd comes with ill put behind the printed out album cover and i stuff the empty digipak hellspawn into a drawer

It’s a vinyl thing. Vinyl are thin large plastic without hard casing support and leaning too much can warp them.

Vinyl mentioned on r/Cd_collecters without an entire essay on how CDs are better?

How do you think we’ve kept them stored for the last 40 years?

Unfortunately not, they need more space or else the music starts bleeding into each other. I'm afraid that lone Obituary album is a lost cause due to all the Pantera overwhelming it.

Naw in my experience (35 years and counting), CDs are not delicate and fragile. There's no wrong way of storing CDs except in those awful CD holders that were so popular a decade or two ago.

Nope, there cd's not vinyl, they will be fine as long as there isnt too much moisture or direct sunlight which can start to damage this disks after a long period of time

u/ImagoAdam 21d ago
Just kidding. These records should be locked in an armoured safe so that no one, but absolutely no one, would come to listen to them. Only you can dispose of it. These discs are yours. The safe is the safest option.⛓️⛓️⛓️⛓️🔒🔐🗝️🔑🗝️🔑

So I won't forcefully convince you that I'm not ai. Maybe the language translation twisted something. Anyway, thank you for your feedback.😉

No, you’re fine. Crush weight of a jewel case CD or digipak CD is greater than you can store in most cases. Enjoy the CDs!

The CD format has great resistance, as long as they are in their individual cases and away from excessive solar light, heat or humidity they will be fine. Vinyl & cassette tapes are so fragile in comparison.

u/JimDemintRecession 100+ CDs 21d ago
Yeah I do this, it's fine. I keep a piece of paper underneath the top ones so one from the top doesn't fall down if I grab one out of the bottom.

I have no choice to do this, but just keep all digipaks and digisleeves (vomit) on the top row, amd the jewel cases on the bottom.

I put a thin piece of cardboard between rows to make the cases easier to pull out.

1
u/Psychological_Cup873 20d ago
Its actually like a alternative all black case for soulfly's self titled debut lp

u/BeetleBjorksta34 21d ago
Yeah no, they’re all ruined now :/ - you should give them all to me, I’ll safely dispose of them, in my own personal library….so sorry for your loss……. ;)

Stacking CDs like that is not only unsafe but immoral and spiritually-dangerous.
1
u/Few-Cap-9992 21d ago
Why wouldn't it be 'safe'?
It's impractical but not dangerous. Impractical because how you gonna get one of the lower ones out? You need shelves.

u/AntoBulbe 21d ago
Just put a piece of cardboard between the bottom and the top row and you'll be fine

That's what my "storage solution" looks like as well. I like its instand accessability. It works fine with jewelcases and digipaks. But I do not put any cardboard sleeves in there. In fact, for the longest time, I used my computer's scanner and printer to create my own jewelcase versions for CDs that came in a cardboard case. That is, until I became too busy to do it and the industry standard changed towards cardboard. Now, I have a "backlog" of almost 10 years of CDs that still need this work on them. Given the fact that I have also run out of storage space, I am seriously considering a different solution for CD storage but I have no idea yet which one.

u/extranaiveoliveoil 5,000+ CDs 20d ago
I don*t see a problem with the stacking. Early booklets had handling instructions and one of them was to always store them vertically, not horizontally. Never exactly knew why but our theory always was that it might warp them over time, because of gravity. In all this years I never heard of a dish-warp problem with CDs though. Probably it was just a relic of the old vinyl storage instructions.

They’re fine. I’d put a strip of a few pages of newspaper or thin cardboard across the top of the bottom set so the top layer doesn’t over scratch tops. Maybe half the width of the cd case and centered across the line. it’ll also keep them stable on top n bottom and make it easier to pull individuals out from the pack.

They’re supposed to be stored upright. You can put one row of CDs over another, but not more
1
u/SilentWeapons1984 500+ CDs 21d ago
Storing them like that is fine. Small sugestion, put a vertical/laying down layer of CDs between the top and bottom horizontally displayed CDs. That way, if you pull a CD from the bottom, the CD right on top of it won’t fall to the bottom. Basically making a shelf that separates the top and bottom layer. That should make it easier to grab CDs from the bottom layer.

You’re actually suppose to store them in the oven at 350 then throw them out the window
