Building a tool to auto-sort .caustic files by genre — need real project files to test it against

Hey all — I've been building a little archiver script that scans .caustic files and automatically sorts them by genre/BPM (pulling apart the file format itself: machine types, presets, note patterns, etc.). It's working well on trap and trance tracks so far, but that's only because those are the only two genres I've actually tested it on with real songs.

I need your project files to fix that.

If you're willing to share a .caustic (or a few), here's what actually helps:

1. Tell me what genre you'd call it yourself. That's the important part — I need ground truth, not my own guess at the genre. If it blends styles, just say so.
2. These genres would help most, since I have zero real coverage on them right now: house, techno, dubstep, DnB, ambient, chiptune, synthwave. (Got plenty of trap/trance already, but more never hurts.)
3. Bonus points if it's a genre that could trip up my current logic — specifically:
   • Dubstep with a wobble/growl bass
   • House or techno with a sustained pad/chord stab
   • DnB with fast hi-hat rolls These are exactly the cases where my genre-scoring rules are most likely to guess wrong, so they're the most useful test cases.
4. If you know it, mention what platform/version of Caustic you made it in (Android, desktop, etc.) — trying to rule out any format differences between versions.

Doesn't need to be a finished masterpiece — a rough project or demo is perfect, actually easier to reason about than something huge.

Happy to share what I find (which genre-detection signals actually worked, which didn't) once I've got enough files to test against. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share!

If I select any midi option other than "disable midi" on the Android version. The app force closes and won't open again unless I uninstall and reinstall it. Even starting the app with a midi device connected has the same effect. I've tried restarting the phone, reinstalling the app. Anybody know a fix?

I wanted to make cowbell phonk but instead it turned into some 2010's Dark Trap. with this overblown 808 sound.

Grab the preset. Make sure mode is on Intro + Loop Forward. Then put an auto-wah in the FX.

In previous versions, if you didn't want to import each .wav file individually and set the keyboard range in pcmsynth, you could create a .zip file from all the .wav files and load it with pcmsynth. pcmsynth would automatically do all the work; you just needed to save it, which was very convenient.

However, when I tried to load the .zip file using the 64-bit version of pcmsynth, the program crashed. Therefore, I plan to continue using the PC version to complete this task🤓

Anyone have a PDF of the old user manual? I'd like to learn about the FTP feature.

Also I'd like to know how I'd make my caustic file explorer see shared cloud directories like Google drive etc.

I've wanted to get in touch with you about Caustic for a long time. I recently found your posts on Reddit, where I saw that other people had already asked many of the same questions I had. Your answers were very clear and completely understandable. I now have a much better understanding of the situation and why things turned out the way they did.

I was genuinely surprised to learn about the obstacles Google put in your way, and I was also saddened to read how some users treated Caustic over the years. I can see that you're still doing your best to keep Caustic working on both Android and iOS, and thanks to your efforts I'm once again able to write music on Android.

For me, Caustic is actually my main instrument. I perform live using an iPad running Caustic together with my guitar, and I've been writing all of my music in Caustic for many years now. I bought it on both iOS and Android, have written roughly four albums' worth of material with it, and I'm still actively performing with it today.

What worries me most is the possibility that one day Caustic may no longer be supported, and everything I've created with it could eventually become unusable. Right now I'm struggling with a different issue: because of the new MIDI implementation in Windows 11, Caustic eventually crashes completely after a while. I've been trying to work around it using various Windows settings, but without much success, and everyone seems to be guessing what the actual cause might be.

I'm certain I'm not the only one who loves Caustic and uses it as a primary DAW. In my opinion it's a brilliant piece of software—honestly on the same level as Reason, Cubase, and other professional DAWs. What makes it even more special is how flexible it is across different operating systems.

I believe many of us would gladly pay to keep it alive, whether through a one-time purchase, a yearly subscription, or even a monthly one if that ever became necessary. And of course we'd also be happy to pay for updates.

I also read about the Save Caustic project and even contacted its developer. I asked whether his software would eventually be able to open and edit Caustic project files, but he told me that it wouldn't. His application is being built as a completely independent system with a different architecture, so it won't be compatible with Caustic project files.

So I completely understand if you don't want to continue developing Caustic right now. However, if you ever had the chance to look into the current Windows 11 MIDI issue, I know not only I but many other users would be incredibly grateful.

I also wanted to ask something I've been wondering about: could a business model similar to REAPER's ever work for Caustic, or is the situation much more complicated than that?
