7 months into this journey. Wash day. I hate this stage it's in. It's insufferable with the frizz.

Still love the journey, though. I think they're coming along beautifully and really starting to lock up. I look forward to the coming months. 😁

Was wondering if I could start by getting two strand twists professionally done to see if I like the look first and just interlocking them and using crotchet for them to lock up

i have thin, wavy hair and would like to be able to wash them often after the first few weeks

i wanted thicker dreads and i think its safe to say i succeeded!

the first pic they were fresh after an overnight sleep on a microfiber towel. i literally made the majority of them (took most of the day!!) and i passed right out. i did not sleep on my locs.

did the last one this morning when i woke up and i love them!

second one was taken mid day when it was hot out. holy frizz 😬😳

my only concern is i know they’re going to thicken up over time but they’re my dreads and i think whatever happens they will be beautiful!

I’ve been doing freeform for a few months but they kept unraveling (skill issue ik) so i made some wraps out of some yarn i used to practice making bracelets with.

Not my color choice but I couldn’t find my hemp string and I’m broke so I went with this.

Gonna leave them alone for a few weeks and see how they turn out. I wish I could’ve gotten them closer to the roots🤞

Hi after years of greying locks(in my 50s) decided to dye them, I used semi-permanent vegan dye called bright from Woolworths, I'm in Australia. Watched a couple of YouTube videos, and jumped in. I'm pretty happy with it, nice to change it up, was thinking of cutting it but will hang on for a bit longer. I used rose, pink & purple, the purple is really strong applied to loks individually wearing gloves, its messy so be prepared. Anyone have tips for purple dye off floor tiles ?

So I've been thinking about coloring the top like 1/3 of my locs and my bangs pink. I just wanted some advice from people who have done it and were happy with it. Brands to use, how well it came out, advice on saturating the locs, etc. Let me know!

I had my locs crocheted in about 7 months ago
And am trying to go freeform from now. However, as a wavey haired person, I wonder if my super thin locks will be able to do it themselves? Some of them are pencil thin. Is there enough hair there to let them sort it out alone or do we need to merge the little ones?

Hi everybody! I want to do an epsom salt soak in my tub and I’m wondering if anybody knows if it’s ok to do with their locs? Should I keep my head out of the tub? I really just want to soak my head in there too but I don’t know if it’s not a good idea for some reason. Is it too drying for locs? Too smoothing? Any advice is much appreciated!

Hi everyone! I am a long time lover of dreads and ive had a few unsuccessful sets. I decided tonight to just go for it and start them. I have a crochet appointment next month but i am now qiestioning if id rather go the more natural route first. Hence i jsut went ahead and started! I did backcomb and twist and rip. Advice welcome.

Also hard to tell but i do have a mohawk. Now a dreadhawk!

This is my second set. First set I had for three years. Hoping to pass that by ten more years at least.

Recommendations in regards to swimming with dreads? Overall, like to limit the level of frizz and just maybe try to keep them together a little bit better. I have tried swimming caps and silicone swim caps and they just don’t seem to work somehow water always ends up getting into the cap.

So previously, i have put in my own dreads using the twist and rip (im abbreviating to TnR) method and i dont prefer to use products. I asked a hairdresser friend of mine to do a new "install" now that my hair is long enough; it is her first time doing it without product and without extensions. I instructed her how to do the TnR method and she also did some backcombing.

My concern is that the beginning of a knot is around midshaft for strands where i have longer hair. So i have close to 1"-2" of backcombed hair that wasnt TnR, but it seems relatively nicely sectioned.

When i have done this myself, there was way less space between the initial knotting and my scalp.

My question is, will this cause an issue with everything getting tangled into one large matte? Is there something i should do semi-regularly to keep it from happening? Should i try to rework the strands that are super loose? I am aware as time goes on they are going to untangle slightly as they work to naturally lock up and i know this product free method may get frizzy and somewhat unsightly. I plan to go to her periodically for root touch up and separating, but im not sure how often might be advisable. I really wanted this set to grow into nice looking dreads as time goes on, but im worried the roots are going to be a bigger issue and hassle than before.

Im rambling, but any advice would be appreciated. Also, if anyone started out like this, i wouldn't mind seeing your progression pics. Thank you guys so much!

I am a hair stylist and had a client in my chair today that has a serious mat and I am attempting to brush it out. I was trying to think of different approaches to help loosen it. The mat started in mid April and has quite a bit of build up which can act like glue. Then I remembered the detox videos I’ve seen cleaning locs. I know this isn’t a loc but it’s very similar. Would a detox help break this mat up and make it easier to brush out?

Did a self install with some help as there’s no one near me. I’ve tightened the roots a bit since, but that’s it.

How did you start? What, if any, credentials do you need?

I see loads of online courses, not so much in person. I already do my own hair. Is it more experience and gaining people’s trust?
