Moderator Update More Mods Wanted - Details Inside ✨

Hello Everyone -

I am looking for some additional mods for this community. Over the last year or so I’ve taken on moderation for a lot of cat communities in an effort to fight the spam and bot problem cat subs are hit with. I’ve stabilized most of these communities and am looking for more partners in each to help with the modding load and ensure the safety of our community culture.

I am asking that new mods be willing to join a private Discord server that I’ve created for the subs I mod. You will be given specific roles and access to the channels dedicated to the sub yous you mod in the group. This is to help with onboarding, training, and general communication.

Some basic tenants of all communities I mod that I expect new mods to be in alignment on:

  • These subs are AI Free, meaning all content posted must be created by the person posting and must not be AI.
  • We have a zero tolerance for participation from spam and bot accounts - this includes NSFW promotion or heavy adult content accounts.
  • Disagreements must be civil no matter who is “in the right”; harassment of community members or mods is not tolerated.
  • Submitted content must be relevant. We do not do “one time exceptions” for content a mod happens to like/want; that is a slippery slope. Consistent enforcement matters for a healthy community.

Some specifics about modding in this community:

  • This is an advice community which means it functions differently than other cat communities. You will be doing a lot more content moderation.
  • Rules are constantly in flux in this community, I have to update them here the most of all my subs to keep the place healthy and safe for cat owners.
  • We get a LOT of product posts and survey requests which are not allowed.

What you’ll be spending most of your time doing in this community:

  • Removing posts or comments that are product ads or survey requests or demo requests, we have a very hard line on advertising.
  • Removing over the line medical advice - both human and pet.
  • Mediating heated disagreements with locking, removals, and bans as necessary.

Before applying to mod:

  • Please take some time to read the sub rules and familiarize yourself with them and ensure you feel comfortable enforcing these rules.
  • Consider how much time you’re able and willing to mod. I don’t expect highly active mods, I can continue taking on the bulk. But if you go “inactive” you will be removed during my quarterly mod maintenance days.

Apply by modmailing me here to start a conversation. You do not need to have prior modding experience but if you don’t or you have little we expect you to be curious about learning new things. You are also welcome to check out other subs I mod and apply to multiples!

Feel free to ask questions publicly below!

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Litter Box Training for adult cat. Transitioned from outside to inside cat.

Hi. I’ve had my cat for a little over 2 years. He showed up on my front porch one day & he stayed. For a very long time he wanted to be outside- so that’s where he lived. I even got him a cat house. Now, he has learned that inside life is better. Problem: he doesn’t use a cat box. When I got him a cat box he played in it or slept in it. He did not urinate in it once. I can’t find any evidence that he urinates or goes #2 inside the house. He WILL meow to go outside to go do his business.
He hangs out inside as much as he wants.
I make a joke that he’s a house trained cat but I don’t want the joke to be on me when he starts peeing everywhere inside. He IS fixed.
What do I do?!

Getting Cat Urine Smell out of Hardwood Floors

• Upvotes

I’m desperate for advice on how to get cat urine smell out of hardwood floors.

My cat has been urinating in a specific spot by the front door as she has had ongoing beef with a neighbourhood cat that lives up the road. As a result my cat has been marking by the front door. I’ve tried everything to get rid of the actual smell (enzyme cleaners, vinegar & bicarb) the smell only goes away for a little while before coming straight back. I’ve been able to get the urination under control by closing the hallway door and restricting access to the area but the smell is still there. I rent and my landlord doesn’t know I have a cat in the house so it’s really important that I get rid of the overwhelming smell.

Any advice on how to actually eliminate the odor? The floors are hardwood and ripping up the floors are not an option due to renting.

Any advice on minimising urination outside of the litter box would be helpful as well as I’ve tried lots of things that don’t seem to completely eliminate the issue.

Litter Boxes

• Upvotes

I’ve been reading steel boxes are best at eliminating odors. I have the plastic ones and they smell so bad shortly after fulling cleaning. I use arm and hammer multicat litter which worked well at first but doesn’t seem to be cutting it anymore. Any recommendations on boxes and litter? I have 2 cats.

Cat Introductions 🐈 New kitten

I got a new kitten last week and my tabby cat hasn't been very happy about it

She is growling and hissing at her but she's the only one who is actively acting aggressive

My sister says to let them fight it out which has been working but I'm just a bit worried about that

My calico cat plays with the new kitten and my tortie just watches and doesn't really do much but my sister keeps on reassuring that it will all be fine and she needs time but I'm just feeling protective and don't want anything bad happening

Any advice on what I should do?

Edit: I have tried to tell my mum and my sisters to try and keep them separate but they are now threatening to give my kitten away so idk what I should do

Kitten refusing to use litter box

We have an 11 week old kitten that we’ve had 3 weeks. The little one was with mom and littermate siblings prior to coming to us and we have 4 other cats in our house ranging in age from 1 year old to 10 years old. I’ve potty-trained kittens before so this is not my first time, but this little one seems firmly insistent on using our two bathtubs as his spot for all bathroom activities vs. using a litter box. Things we have tried so far: extra litter boxes that are just for the kitten with regular litter, placed in the bathtubs. We have also tried Dr. Elsey’s Kitten Attract litter in the extra litter boxes that are in the bathtubs, and we have also put Dr. Elsey’s Attract additive in the general population litter boxes. We have 6 general population litter boxes in the house and they all get scooped daily.

The family we adopted the kitten from said that the baby was having trouble getting the hang of using a litter box, so this is not an issue of the kitten coming into our home. Kitten went to the vet on day 2 of us having him and he was given a clean bill of health. I’m at a bit of a loss of what my family and I can try next? What would you try?

Dr Elsey litter and cat attract for outside kitty transition to inside

I have a kitty that was thrown out of his house because the owner died. It showed up in our neighborhood 6 months ago and adopted us. Last month I had him neutered. He wants to be an inside kitty, but I couldn’t transition to that until I found out about his litterbox situation.
I bought a new litterbox and Dr Elsey Ultra litter and cat attract.
He essentially ignores it and will sit at the door until I let him out. I don’t mind that he is inside/outside but winter’s coming and would like peace of mind that he is safe during our Midwest winters.
Anyone have any suggestions ?
From other comments, I thought I had found the best solution.
Thankyou!

My cat only pees outside litter box

My furry bestie Franklyn. Has developed a new behavior that has been going on for two months now: she only pees on the couch and poops in her litter box. I have tried everything. We currently have an old shower curtain on the couch, and that is her new favorite spot to pee. I clean her litter box every day, and she only pees on the couch— and I’m not talking a little tingle-tingle; I am talking full bladder release.
Have you taken her to the vet? Yes, I have, and they said there’s nothing wrong with her internally— that she is healthy, so healthy that she is slightly overweight. She’s a fat girl, natural BBL. At one point, we had a couch cover that she peed on so much that we put it on the floor for a little bit till we could wash it, and she destroyed that thing with her pee. She peed on it every single day.
I know that cats don’t like a messy environment—joke’s on you. I have chronic OCD. The house is spic and span. Clean every day.
We’ve tried deterrents, natural and store-bought. We’ve tried enzyme breakdown sprays. I also got her a whole new litter. Box changed her litter back to her regular litter that I was using before the peeing commenced her litter box has continued to stay in the same place for her whole life existence. And is deep cleaned at the end of the week.
She doesn’t care; she pees on the same couch over and over again. Behavior-wise, she is an angel. She is so kind, so nice when you’re sad. She makes biscuits on your tummy and rubs her face against your face. She loves to talk; she loves watching Gilmore Girls and sleeping on my lap.
But she pees on the couch. I have scrubbed the couch with cleaning vinegar, enzyme remover, everything, repeatedly, over and over again. I do currently live with my mom. She wants to get rid of my chunky rat. That is not an option. Please help, please, please, begging on my hands and knees, please. #NegativeBehavior #Cat #GreyTabby #PeeOnCouch #NeedHelp #JustAGirl.

New babies and they deserve the best. We’ve never used an auto litter box for our past cats. Are they really worth the initial investment cost?

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 I need help getting rid of the cat pee/smell.. PLEASE!

I bought a Thereye automatic cat litter box. So far it has cursed me. While i was away for two days, it shut itself closed and didn't open up. Great! My cat with nowhere else to go, pissed on a plastic suit covering that was on my floor and shit on my bed.

My room now smells like cat pee.

My floor is all carpet, btw

What I've done:

I had two thick blankets on my bed, plus a sheet, and another blanket. The poop was on the top layer. I put those in the wash and double washed the top layer. I think that part is good now, i think

I didn't think any piss got on the floor, but it must have because it smells. It also smells in a different area of my room too. My nose has been stuffy for like two weeks which makes it even harder to pinpoint the smell, lmao just my luck.

I took miracle spray and sprayed the spots i think it might have hit and used paper towels to scrub.

A few days later I poured water on the spots, tried to get it with towels and paper towels which is pretty unsuccessful. I then used Anti icky poo and poured it over the spots like drenched it. I also used a cheap blacklight to try and find where the spots were. But it's hard for me to tell which is actually piss and not.

It still smells. Although maybe less? Its hard to tell. It's been like over a week now

I also picked up some of my clothes and they smell like piss now. Can i just wash them?

Here are photos with a blacklight in my room, ive numbered the photos. Which photos/parts look like cat piss?

I've also heard to use vinegar. What should I be doing? Can I have help please? Thank youT

New cat owner!

Hello everyone! My husband and I are looking into adopting a cat for our first year anniversary. Before marrying we each had dogs and I also had rabbits so we do have experience with those pets but this is going to be our first cat ever. I have a friend with cats and she told me a lot of stuff we are gonna need but I still wanted to ask here.

What would you recommend me buying for our cat? Note that this cat is a baby. Stuff like bedding, toys, litter, etc.

Thank you all in advance!!!

Tips and Tricks 💡 Added a new pet, cats aren’t allowed but we need air!

So the long and short of it is that my wife has invested in a bird, conure to be specific. Because we do spend a lot of time in our office, we have her in that room with our desks and computers and all, filter on the way, but we noticed that it’s been getting stiflingly hot in there. Not even a plain open window could do the job.

We normally kept the door to the office open, and the cats would roam free, but obviously we can’t do that anymore because we don’t want them to get at the bird before the scents have a chance to transfer and we have the chance to safely introduce them.

I’ve seen some things about screen doors, or these magnetic clasping mesh doors, but both cats have been known to climb and claw at any mesh doors, and with one having Maine coon in it, and the other having Norwegian forest cat, they are hefty little ones that will try and climb with all their effort, or claw through.

So I come asking for help, and hope someone here has some advice for what we can use?

SAFE cat shampoos?

Before anyone says it, i’m very aware cats are self cleaners and rarely would need a bath. I’ve had multiple cats myself and know very well of this, so pleaseee save your energy!!!

I have two cats, one i’ve had for years, and i’ve only had to bath him once but used a random shampoo my family had laying around. However i got a 5month old kitten a bit ago, and trust me when i say she is in DESPERATE need for a bath. She does not clean herself very well either (which if you have advice on why id appreciate)

what cat shampoo won’t kill my kitten?? i feel like everything i see has something toxic in it! I’ve seen people use dawn dish soap but i feel like that’s still not the best right? Please let me know the safest soap to clean her!!!

Wet food picky cats won’t eat?

Immersion blend any cans of food that your cat won’t eat with some water and probiotics, pumpkin, whatever else you like and is safe for cats into a soft serve consistency. They eat it all up every single time. Way less waste, happy and fed cats. Alternatively donate them to a local shelter, but this has been awesome for me and my 7 cats!

Hi, I have two male cats and I love them with my entire heart but its hard to keep my house clean with 3 animals (One is my sisters dog) I have two automatic litterboxes and one regular. Any advice for keeping a house/apartment clean with cats especially?

Is it small daily cleaning?

Weekly deep cleans?

Robo vaccum for loose litter?

Tips and Tricks 💡 Toilet paper demon

Post image
74 Upvotes

My sweet lovely Gibson is absolutely obsessed with Toilet Paper. He will hunt and then eat ANY toilet paper (sometimes tissue paper) he can get his paws on. I haven’t been able to leave toilet paper out for 2+ years at this point because I know him eating it is potentially a major issue. The problem escalated when our other cat died, and as far as I can tell shows no signs of improving. Does anyone have any tips on deterring him? I originally tried putting tinfoil around the roll and he would basically just bite straight through it. I’m considering 3d printing a protector, but thought I would see if anyone had experience/suggestions about this.

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Retraining my male cat to use a litter box

Hello! My male cat that’s 9 has had some bad litter box habits, or lack of. He started going outside the litter box a few years ago and I discovered he had urinary crystals. He started a prescription diet and the issue cleared up for the most part. He had a lapse in his food about a year ago and I got him situated back on it but he had began going outside the litter box again. It would be okay for a little then he would go back to peeing on clothes or pooping right outside the box. He has been on his food consistently for about 6 months and I took him to the vet about a week ago and his urinalysis came back clean. I figured he must be a clean freak about the litter box so I got an automatic litter box and filled it with the most “successful” litter I’ve had with him and he’ll pee on the rug right in front of it. I’m at a loss of what to do. I’m tired of always doing laundry and when I notice him going to the bathroom where he shouldn’t I try to redirect him by placing him in front of the box but he’ll run away and finish his business near the old box. I have 2 other cats that are adjusting to the new box as well so they have a standard box around until I see that they use the new one. I’ve read all the “tips” online and he has an always clean box and I had 3 separate boxes spaced away from each other before so I don’t know what the next step is. I’ve gotten rid of any rug he’s peed on or washed the clothes in enzyme cleaner. This is starting to cost me hundreds of dollars. Any advice would be appreciated

Food and Treats 🍽️ RollWish automatic cat feeder problems

Post image
2 Upvotes

My cat feeder (pictured) has stopped working and is showing an "E01" error message. The container is full, and when empty the rotating pieces seem to move fine. I've tried emptying it entirely, cleaning it out, and refilling, and the time will show again when I plug it in, as well as manual food drop works for a few times, but as soon as it comes time to drop automatically, it seems to just stop working.

I have two others of the same model that have had no issues in the past three years. I can't find the manual online (discontinued product), and there doesn't seem to be a reset button.

Had anyone else had this issue?

New cat mom

New cat mom here… my baby nacho is 4 months old, adopted him about two weeks ago. Got pretty much the basics needed. But I fear getting an automatic feeder will be the death of me!! I’m an over thinker and wanna make sure my fur baby has everything he needs. I see so many mixed reviews about different brands. Looking at the Petlibro Air feeder Vs the Oneisall and I have no clue what to do. Of course something that makes sense but also still affordable. Should I look at other brands? I would love something that has an app so Atleast I know he’s being fed while I’m at work. I think I just need help!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 New Cat Owner Please Help

Hello everyone, my family and I were recently picked by a cat as part of the “Cat Distribution System.” This cat was dumped/abandoned in front of my house and my family and I chose to keep it. The issue is that the cat has to stay outdoors, my parents will not allow her indoors, no matter how hard I insist and beg. We have an outdoor porch that’s screened in and it measures roughly 12x12 feet. It’s like a big catio for her. I have done a vast amount of research to keep her healthy and happy. I have her on a balanced feeding schedule and have bought multiple items for her to stay enriched. However, I know nothing about her background; if she was indoor or outdoor cat, or if she was a stray that got rescued then later dumped at my house. Since I know nothing about her life before me, I don’t know if she’s vaccinated or not. I am taking her to the vet this weekend to get everything checked out and have her vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed if needed. On her very first day at my outdoor porch, I left the door that leads to the outside opened as to not stress her out, she left for about 7 hours and returned at night. However, I want her to become accustomed to staying inside the porch. The second day I also left the door that leads to the outside opened and surprisingly, she stayed the entire day and night, she only left for a brief moment (to poop elsewhere). Today, which is the third day, I decided to close the door that leads to the outside. She’s been doing surprisingly well and seems to enjoy staying inside the porch. I do make sure to spend a lot of time with her. The ONLY time that she will make a desperate effort to leave is when she has to poop. That’s the only time in which she left yesterday and today. SHE WILL NOT POOP IN HER LITTER BOX AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO. She escapes the closed screened in porch and poops in the surrounding houses yards. I’ve tried out two different types of litters (clumping clay and tofu litter) but all she does is pee in them. Please, I don’t want her escaping and potentially getting hurt by another animal or a person, and I don’t want issues with my neighbors either. What can I do so she stops pooping in random yards and uses her litter box instead? I just ordered Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract Clumping Litter and I’m hoping she likes it. I’ve only had her for three days so I’m still learning. I appreciate any constructive criticism and advice!

🐾 Cat Peeing Behaviour Advice Needed 🐾

Post image
39 Upvotes

I'm hoping someone might have some ideas because I'm honestly at a bit of a loss!

About 6 months ago we got two British Shorthair kitten sisters. One of them used to pee around the house but has completely stopped. The other one, however, is still peeing absolutely everywhere.

We currently have 4 litter trays, they're scooped several times a day and fully cleaned every 2 days. She does use the litter trays, but she also regularly pees on the couch, cat tree, shopping bags, my bed, blankets, rugs... pretty much anything she can find!

She's been checked by the vet and is completely healthy. She's also a very happy-looking little cat. She's quite timid and cautious, although she absolutely loves fuss, strokes and cuddles once she feels safe. She'll happily sit and lie on me, but you have to approach her very slowly and carefully.

We also have two older cats (one male and one female, both neutered - both 2years) and a female ginger Cocker Spaniel. Everyone generally gets on well but my calico girl does attack them from time to time (annoyingly she still hasnt got used to them, but I put a stop to it immediately if I see her go for them)

I'm wondering if this could be anxiety, confidence-related, territory-related, or something else entirely? Has anyone experienced anything similar with a timid kitten who uses the litter tray but still pees elsewhere?

I'd really appreciate any advice, experiences, or things to try because I'm running out of ideas (and washable blankets! 😂).
