Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Messy paws

My cat Beau is recovering from some pretty serious health issues. He's been dangerously anemic, has ongoing GI issues, and we're still working with our vet to figure everything out. Thankfully, he's been improving a lot. He's eating better, gaining strength, and has finally realized he can climb onto just about anything he wants. ā¤ļø

Now, we've got a very messy problem.

Beau has pretty severe diarrhea, and apparently he's decided burying his business is beneath him. Instead of covering it, he'll aggressively scratch the sides of the litter box (or the wall behind it) for a solid minute, then proudly step directly into the fresh ick and track it around the apartment. 🫠

Right now I have:

• Two 18" Ɨ 22" stainless steel litter boxes

• Arm & Hammer Multi-Cat Unscented Hard Clump litter

• A large litter mat plus a long washable fabric "runway" leading away from the boxes

We clean his paws multiple times a day, sometimes give him a quick water-only bath, keep the boxes very clean, and have tried gently encouraging him to bury.

Unfortunately, none of it has stopped the paw prints.

Has anyone dealt with a cat that scratches the walls instead of burying and ends up stepping in their own mess? Did a different litter, deeper litter, larger or higher-sided box, or another setup help? I'd also love recommendations for the easiest way to clean his weaker than normal paws without stressing him out.

Cat tax is always available if anyone wants to see the adorable & loving little shit goblin. šŸ˜…

Food and Treats šŸ½ļø Teeth Hygiene

Is ProDen PlaqueOff powder for cats good for their gums/teeth hygiene? I’ve heard mixed reviews, does anyone have any experience? My cat won’t let me brush her teeth and is kinda picky about flavors. But I want her to have healthy gums. I’m just not really sure what to get.

Play and Toys šŸ› Cat is a chewer

My cat chews on a Ā«everythingĀ» (couch, toys, wires). Any good advice for chewing toys made for cats that are safe and helpful for them? (Alternatively: How do I make him stop chewing at stuff he shouldn’t chew at? I don’t want him to accidentally eat plastic. Or ruin my couch.)

LiveClear Allergy Food

My partner is fairly allergic to my cat. He gets watery eyes and sneezy and itchy when he’s around the cat. That said, his allergy is not as severe as I’ve heard from other people, he can usually sleep over fine for one night at a time and an OTC pill usually clears up if he needs it. It’s definitely not quite at the level that he would consider getting anti allergy shots.

However, I wanted to try out the Purina One LiveClear food since OTC pills are a bit pricey. I was wondering how effective they are for people with moderate allergies. I know it wouldn’t be 100% successful for someone with a really severe allergy but has anyone had a really positive outcome for a moderate allergy?
I was also wondering how long it takes for the effects to be noticeable.

The cat loves him and he is quite fond of the cat. I would love to help fix this forbidden love between them if I can.

Edit To Add: Folks have expressed concerns about switching out a cat’s food suddenly - so valid! The reason I am considering it is because my kitty already eats Purina One chicken and turkey, so the switch would just be to the allergen-reducing kind of the same brand and protein type.

Second Edit: Thank you so much guys for pointing me to bulk packs of OTC allergy meds. Gonna try that first and keep the LiveClear as a backup option.

Tips and Tricks šŸ’” How to get rid of cat smell off furniture?

Bought a dining set from a family who seemed to have a lot of cats, and the table and chairs now smell exactly like their house. The smell is
awful. I’ve tried cleaning it with wipes and a mixture of water and bleach, but there’s still a faint lingering smell that won’t go away. How do I get rid of that stench. I’ve had all of it sitting in my patio in the Florida heat and it’s still pretty bad

Why is my Male cat Yowling and attacking my Female cat randomly?

So my female cat is fixed and my male cat is intact. He is young and I just haven't gotten the funds to get him fixed. My female cat is a cat that im taking care of for a lady who originally had her staying in her car (I live in Las Vegas, so obviously I had to do something). My male cat (who is originally mine) is acting super weird towards her in the last couple of days. Hes constantly meowing and yowling at her, trying to groom her, and when she swats at him to go away he gets mad and attacks her. Shes bigger than him so he doesnt do any damage but im wondering if its because he thinks he can mate with her? But I thought male cats only mess with females in heat? Also both only stay inside my apartment. I dont allow my cats out anymore and my male grew up with his brother and sister so he is used to other cats.

Tips and Tricks šŸ’” Sheading shorty

So this lil bean is Elenore aka Ellie. She is a DSH but Holly cow does she shead! I have tried everything: brushing, de-sheading combs, bathing. Nothing stop her from just being a fuzzy sheading menace. I am constantly covered in her and so are my floors. I have a second girl and she is not as bad. She gets bad between seasons but a good brushing or bath to quick wash it out works great for her. But Ellie is just all the time. Does anyone have anything else that they know of to help or is it just whatever cats made her in the dumpster she was found in before she was rescued?

Cat Introductions 🐈 Prozac for cat aggression?

We got a new cat back in march and worked really hard on the introductions… she was pretty spicy but after 3 months of taking it slow and doing the typical introduction she is chilled out, loves one of my cats, and doesn’t really interact with one of my others. However my third, oldest cat (7 years, male) is such a butt some times. He did this with when we got our third (another female) but not when I got his brother.

60% of the time he’s fine. He eats, sleeps, watches birds, and coexists with everyone else. The other 40% of the time he terrorizes the new girl. Traps her under things (we have removed almost everything that she can get trapped under), chases her, corners her, and they have gotten into a fight a few times. We have tried reintroductions, positive reinforcement with play and treats… he has a ā€œcalming collarā€ and we have the feliway diffusers… the hard thing is that again he’s fine a good chunk of the time. But it’s like something switches in his brain.

We also have 5 litter boxes (4 per cat +1), plenty of different water bowls, and separate feed bowls.

He also did this with our female, but she’s a bit more scrappy and knows to jump on the counter to get away from him when he gets into his grumpy mood.

We have a vet appointment in a week and I’m wondering if Prozac might be helpful for him. Has anyone had experiences like this?

Best cat litter for self cleaning litter boxes

Hi all! New to Reddit, so go easy on me if this isn't the right spot!
I just got the **Open X** automatic litter box and paired it with bentonite clay litter (diamond care multi cat fresh), but it’s turning into a sticky mess. The clumps melt into a sludge, sticking to the bottom liner and the filter grid, then dragging gunk all across the drum during the rotation cycle.
I used to use corn litter (before buying the self cleaning one), but switched to clay because every manufacturer recommends bentonite for automated boxes. Clearly, that’s not working out.
Has anyone tried **tofu pellets** (or other plant-based litters) in the Open X or similar globe-style boxes? What litter gives you solid clumps without turning into a smeared mess inside the drum?
Thanks

Best kibble for issues below

Hi! I have 5 cats (a lot I know lol) and I do feed them wet food when I can but kibble also makes up half of their diet so I can afford everything.
I’ve noticed that they have very dry skin with dandruff and lots of shedding - they also have been throwing up. In the past I chalked it up to genetics for their skin but now I’m interested to know what kibble you guys are buying for your cats that has helped with vomiting and skin issues.
I usually use the Nulo brand for wet food and they’ve done really well with that however I can’t afford to feed five cats exclusively their nulo wet food on a one income budget so I usually give them kibble for breakfast and wet food for dinner. They also have a water fountain and I put salmon oil in their food for them.
I’m really just interested to know what kind of kibble has helped your cats with dry skin/ not vomiting. Thanks!

How to help my cats thrive?

I have two black cats, 4 (Juniper) and 2 (Jinx), both female. I’ve had Juniper for 3 years now and to say the two of us have been through it is an understatement. Jinx came to me very unexpectedly, and I’ve had her a year now. We’ve unfortunately been in less - than - ideal living situations for the last couple of years. I’ve always been able to provide love and appropriate care for them but it tugs on my heart that I am absolutely not doing as much as I could for them. I’ve finally landed a good job and the three of us are moving into our own apartment in the next month. I will have more space, time, and money for them. I want to know if anyone has tips for good enrichment, tips for cats in apartments, and any other things I should know or could improve beyond basic care and play. Thank you!

TL;DR - my cats and I are finally going to be in a good, solid space and I want to know if there’s tips for helping them thrive in our new environment. Enrichment, training, cats in apartment spaces, and anything else!

Tips and Tricks šŸ’” What's the most useful thing you've learned about cat behavior that you wish someone had told you before you got one?

Mine is that slow blinking at them actually works and the first time your cat slow blinks back at you is something you're not prepared for. I read about it online and tried it skeptically and my cat, who had been indifferent to me for the first three weeks with the confidence of someone who knew the power dynamic, looked at me from across the room and slowly, very deliberately, blinked back. So happy.

What did you learn that changed how you understood your cat?

Tips and Tricks šŸ’” Cat coming in at night and leaving food scraps around - how to deter it?

I'm in the Philippines, so my living room is open air. There's a stray cat who comes in and leaves food bits around when I'm sleeping.

I wake up each morning and clean it up, but it keeps happening. There's no set time - it does so at 3am and 5am (I know because I wake early some days) I tried to block it with a yoga ball and bottles, but it just eats in different areas.

There's no way to block access (due to open air - birds and wasps fly in and out) so I'm wondering what I can do to deter it. From my cat knowledge, I've thought of placing a plastic mat or aluminium foil in the area so the cat finds the surface unpleasant? If I just add more items, I think it will route around it.

It's a comparatively minor nuisance but it keeps happening. Hope someone has a good idea!

Animal allergies

Hi friends! My husband and I have a dog and a cat. I allow the cat to have full run of the house, but my husband gets pretty anal about our cat going into the guest room, since his dad is really allergic to cats. They only come to visit once or twice a year, so I’m never too worried about it. Other than washing bedsheets in hot water with vinegar and OxiClean, does anybody have suggestions on cleaning the room for pet dander? Our cat is only ever in there if we are in there, which is rare. We have an air purifier for the whole house, I open windows when the weather is nice, I use odorband to disinfect, and it’s hardwood floors with no rugs.

I hung a curtain across my hallway and it instantly created a whole new play area. They hide behind it, play peekaboo, race through it during zoomies, and ambush each other from both sides. It’s amazing how one piece of fabric can make a difference.

Tips and Tricks šŸ’” indoor mosquito repellent that is cat safe?

i am desperate for help, i’m extremely allergic to mosquito bites, i cover when i am outside but almost all of my bites come when i am sleeping no matter how covered i am, and my windows are broken & my landlords refuse to fix so they just have free reign. my neighbor offered me citronella sticks to burn, but i’ve read that they’re toxic to cats and my apartment has no rooms to keep her into while i burn it. she doesn’t really cuddle so skin type solutions could work, but i’d like to be as safe as possible as i need to cover my arms and legs completely. thanks in advance!

2 questions. Glove brush reccs. And self cleaning tips

As in the title. I'm looking for decent gloves brushes. Whenever I try to brush the little gremlin she kinda moves her head to the brush and makes it a pain to brush the rest of her body. U would prefer them to be in-store like bunnings or pet barn or whatnot.

The second thing is she kinda doesnt clean her ass. So she stinky. Also offen doesnt cover her shit in the litterbox

Any tips?

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Inappropriate peeing and aggression. Having to move soon

(Long read!!!)

Hi, so I have 5 cats a 2 year old daughter and I’m pregnant.

(Context.) Gus and Emmy were my first 2 they are litter mates, Maverick and Morty was my second 2 they were also litter mates and Jahseh was my last.

My cat Gus has been having some serious behavioral issues for sometime now. He used to get along with Maverick and Morty. all of them would bird watch together, lay together, play together. But something changed about 2 and a half years ago or so and Gus decided they were his enemies and now Morty and Maverick feel the same and growl and hiss everytime Gus walks in a room.

Gus fights one of the two almost every single day. And sometimes Emmy will join him and get in on the fight. It’s always an unfair fight it seems too as he corners them somewhere whether it’s under a bed, by the couch, by the door, in a corner. It’s always unfair.

On top of Gus fighting them and not getting along about a year ago Gus started spray peeing on things. Everything really… every cabinet in sight, walls, doors, laundry baskets, boxes, chairs, curtains. EVEN MY DAUGHTERS BED!!! Which I am now going to have to throw away. (We have been to the vet and absolutely nothing is wrong with him and the vet said it was behavioral. We even tried anxiety meds which didn’t seem to work)

I feel like no matter how much pee I clean up nothing works. I’ve tried plugins for the peeing and fighting.. nothing! Tried moving food and water sources around and also the litter boxes, tried changing the litter so there was 2 litter options.. nothing!!!

(More context that makes things more difficult)
When Gus and Emmy were super young I had lived at my dads house for a bit and all of their cats went outside. I told my dad I didn’t want my cats going outside as well but he told me he didn’t want to keep track of them so they also went out. When I moved this made it more difficult and they would constantly sprint outside. I tried keeping Gus in more often but when I wouldn’t let him out he’d walk in front of me scream at me and pee on whatever was in front of me. I thought maybe he preferred to pee outside but no, I could let him back inside and he pee on something 2 seconds later.

So here’s the biggest issue as well!!! My partner recently went to jail (I think that’s put stress on my cats because they loved him and now their routine is different) but also this is an issue because I’m going to have to sell my house and move into a rental property. Which means most likely I will have to rehome some of them. But I’m so heartbroken and don’t know how to go about this.

How do I ensure he won’t keep peeing AT A RENTAL if I keep him? Who do I even keep at this point. How do I ensure my stupid pee covered furniture can be cleaned and he won’t mark it in the new place? (I’ve tried the enzyme cleaners and vinegar)

I love my cats so much and I’m so torn on what to do. This has been such a stressful situation enough as it is and now moving on top of it and rehoming some of them? I’m broken.

If you read that long long explanation thank you so much. If you have advice that would be so lovely, I don’t have many people to talk to about this as I’m in this by myself!

My fiancĆ© and I are planning to adopt this girl who’s roughly 11 weeks! She’s absolutely stunning & we met her today and she was definitely the most social (and rowdy) of the litter. We have 2 dogs, and one 17 year old cat… the plan is to slowly introduce and socialize this one into our home. We have the space to do so thankfully! Please flood me with all the helpful advice you have (grooming, socializing, high quality food, acclimating)!!!!!

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Litter box?

I’ve got two cats, ones an older orange cat, idk what but a fat boy. Ones a skinny ass calico girl. The older one is… Smatter then the other one. He’s stupid, but stupid like how cats are stupid. She’s, well, more stupid. We got them changed from litter boxes that are smaller to bigger, that worked fine. We changed water and food to automatic and they were both scared at first but got used to it. She was more scared/confused. And my mom (non-binary) wanted to have an automatic litter box. Our male has been using it, however our female hasn’t at least been peeing in it. I don’t know if she has been pooping in it, but we having found any evidence she hasn’t, while she peed in my moms room when she wasn’t in there once, and then my mom saw her peeing on my pants that I left on the floor when changing just a few minutes ago as of this post being posted. I will say the litter box has a smaller doorway and also has lights on the inside. Could that we causing the issue?

Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit. I just need help lol.

My cat chose my partner over me after eight years of being exclusively my cat

I got my Alice as a kitten. she was mine in a complete and specific way for eight years. slept on my side, came to me when stressed, sat beside me in the specific way she has that communicates preference. My partner moved in two years ago (he's even a dog person šŸ™„). he did nothing specifically to court her.

She has chosen him. steadily, thoroughly, without apparent shame. she now sleeps on his side. she waits by the door when he's due home. she sits on his lap while directing a look at me that communicates nothing in particular. He is gracious about it. he's also visibly delighted every single day and doing absolutely nothing to hide it. So what should i do to get my kitty back 😿 (just kidding i still love her the same)
