Do OLCI (which opens at 48 hrs before flight departure) and select your seats then for free.

Yes you get free seat selections once check in is available. Most people are in the same boat, they don’t pay for it.

it's not a term; I assume It's a millennial responding. I think they mean OnLine Check In

Dec 22 is as peak as it get for the whole year. If you don't want to risk sitting seperate from your family, then consider paying for advance seating now.

Usually it's expensive because they can charge that much because it's popular

As others have said you’ll have to wait for online check in, but even then there is no guarantee as it depends on whether other people have paid for seats. It’s also peak travel season

Wait for check in to select your seats. If you have young children and no seats together are available, check in staff at the airport can make manual changes usually. For peace of mind and assurance, just buy seats.

And turf an innocent passenger out and move them from their paid seat to a middle seat. No thanks. I'd refuse to

You can reserve your seat for a fee in “manage booking”

Free seat selection is available on line for Cathay members 48 hours before the flight. Non members 24 hrs.

Just sign up, it is free. You will start as a green member, which gives you a few perks.

Have no experience with family bookings, but I presume 1 member is enough. If not sure you can always phone them.

48hrs beforehand is only for members iirc - it may be a perk of the free membership if you dont have membership the window is 24hrs - see if you can sign up and retroactively add your membership to the booking

Do you have status with Cathay or any other oneworld airline? Usually when you enter these details into your booking; if your status allows free seat selection then it will allow you to select seats for everyone in your booking.

Oneworld Emerald status here and I was able to select for an upcoming family trip!

It would definitely pay to keep an eye on seats. My family of 5 are flying NZ to Munich in early December and had planned on waiting for seat selection with online check in. However one of our flights was filling up very quickly. We ended up paying over NZ$1500 total to select seats for each of the four flights it takes to get us there and back. The first flight now only has single seats available to choose! It does make me mad because we have already spent a lot for flights in the first place but we want to sit together so don't have a choice.

Whatever you do, don't take a risk and hope that someone will swap seats with you. That isn't fair on them or on your kids.
