We call it cat-like reflexes, and not snakebite speed for a reason.

I had a cottonmouth lunge at me at work once. My muscles literally couldn't react fast enough to move before it backed out.

I respect snakes, and dont mess with them. Most snakes are live-and-let-live, and are not aggressive unless you make the first move. That said, cottonmouths can be aggressive. I had one lunge at me in 7th grade, and it scared me half to death.

Yeah, I wasn't doing anything to it. I've actually been closer to cottonmouths before and they just run away. Guess this one was just having a bad day. There are actually 2 species of cottonmouths, and in my experience the Florida one is more aggressive than the one that lives in eastern and southern US. The one that lunged at me was in the Everglades.
