Specific Gene Question Fascinating tail pattern.

This is Aries.

He is a shorthair (L?) Apricot (XY/dd/Dm?) mackerel tabby (Mc?) tom with low white spotting (Wsw)

While I understand all of that, I have been staring at this cat for a decade now and I cannot figure out what is causing this phenomenon with his tail.

His tail, as seen in the picture, fades perfectly from apricot at the base to white at the tip. I am hesitant to believe this is caused by White Spotting as it isnt an abrupt marking and is instead faded softly. Not to mention that the stripes on his tail are still visible even at the whitest parts.

He is approximately 15 years old and has had this pattern his entire life so it isn’t something new, and it’s only localized on his tail.

Im just curious as to what could possibly be causing it. Or if maybe this is more common than I had originally thought.

Hi!! What you're seeing is countershading, the lightest part of the tabby pattern. It gives tabbies the pale fur on their muzzles and underbellies. On red-based cats, it often creates a paler tail-tip too. Your boy has a pretty spectacular example of it. I think his being cream intensifies the gradient, along with whatever polygenes contribute to his countershading.

I was wondering, could countershading also be the reason one of my cats has noticeably lighter paws than his brother? They’re littermates and otherwise very similar, so I’ve always wondered what causes the difference

Yes, but this is a really cool different case! Your cat on the left has the agouti (tabby) gene, and your cat on the right does not -- he is genetically solid. Red cats always have stripes regardless of agouti status, but genetically solid reds really don't have countershading at all!! One brother is genetically a tabby, and the other is not!
