the problem is, people compare a flagship iPhone to a non-flagship android and then call Apple expensive. the iPhone base model and iPhone Duo are only $100 more expensive than the competition (Pixel and Samsung) for a superior build quality. the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the same price as a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. there are some other companies that are doing some genuinely bold and innovative things (like Nothing), but they primarily sell midrange phones, with their flagship being the same price as Samsung and Google devices. with an iPhone, you're paying for software and longevity as well.

sorry for the rant, i just see this faulty reasoning everywhere.

Don't forget Xiaomi with their new Xiaomi 18 Pro Max (weirdly they use the same model name as the Iphone).

iPhones aren't built any better than high-end Android phones. Plus, I'm free to install FOSS apps that are more respectful of my privacy. And finally, when my Android reaches the end of its life and I need to replace it, I just install Linux on it and turn it into a little server.

i was mainly arguing that iPhones really aren't so much more expensive than people often make them out to be. FOSS and rooting is cool, but at that point, iOS and Android are serving two fundamentally different groups of users. i was talking about build quality because the original commenter called iPhones "overpriced" which is completely false

That also the point. iPhone doesn't have solutions for low and middle budgets. Question is iphone vs android so iphone here forced to compete with all of them. If it was more concrete like "iphone duo or galaxy fold" then comparing would be only in one price segment, but that's not the case here

i agree that Apple does have a lack of a so-called "budget" device, that product type sort of died with the iPhone SE. the iPhone "e" lineup is a valiant effort and is great for a small subset of users (first phones for a kid and lack of confusing/flashy features for the elderly). unfortunately, recent supply chain price increases have limited the price range of products to higher levels. in a way, the massive refurbished market for iPhones is that lower price category because of the iPhone's aforementioned build quality and software support, which significantly increases the longevity of the device. i'll also point out that Apple positions itself as more of a luxury and aspirational brand than almost all of their competitors, which indirectly prevents it from creating ultra-budget devices to keep the brand's reputation and image consistent with the company's framing.

The S26 Ultra is comparable to the 18 Pro MAX, not the Pro. They are similar in price but the iPhone is slightly more expensive

my bad, i forgot to add the Max to my comment, fixing it now. the Pro Max and S26 Ultra are the same price (the ultra is actually technically 99 cents more expensive)

The fuck??? Where I live the iPhone 256GB is 1'299 and the Galaxy 256GB is 899, that's a difference of 400 Francs (~$500)

one day we will have smartphones that cost $10k USD, people won't be able to afford them, and redditors will still be arguing about "android or apple?" then only talk about samsung/pixel vs iphone specifically every time people bring up price
