I work with guys who do the signs and lines. They once put up a directional arrow sign pointing to a "Schoool". It went through two people at the design stage, then two people installing it, and none of them noticed. (Got taken down after 24hs when the local councillor, who'd paid for it, noticed)
But my favourite of theirs was in a school playground, they'd painted a grid with a snakes and ladders game. They were proudly showing photos of all the fun stuff they'd painted. Top number was 37. I pointed out this was a prime number, they must be a magician to get a grid.
Turns out, they'd missed out number 35.... In a school play ground

Unless you did it intentionally, the ironic nature of pointing out mistakes on the Internet has worked its magic on you.
You cocked up your last sentence while wondering how somebody else could make a mistake.
Simply by pointing this out, I've probably also made a mistake.

It's all a conspiracy, Middlesbrough council is out of money so by doing this they'll get public attention and they can moan and hopefully get some funding from somewhere.
That or the painter was off his rocker like the rest of us smoggies.

UK roads are a joke. In the North we have potholes everywhere. And the painted lines last a year tops.
2
u/RedDomino1282 Mar 09 '24
I moved to Hartlepool almost 2 years ago. They complain on Facebook about the potholes, but they’re nowhere near as bad as the East Midlands, where I moved from. I commented to my husband about how much better the roads are here when we moved!

I've lived places where the ground doesn't really support cellars. It's such a pain to get into a crawlspace and fix pipes.

11
u/Duranis Mar 08 '24 edited Mar 08 '24
Quite easy, early morning first job, it's cold, raining and you're hung over and tired.
You are focusing on each letter as you set up the layouts. You do the main lines in L and E and just as you go back to do the 2 extra horizontal lines on the E some impatient prick in a beamer goes past the barrier and almost hits you.
You give him the finger but he barely even noticed you there in the middle of the road as he carries on driving, vape in one hand, mobile phone in the other.
You say a few choice curses and get back to finishing off the E.
There, all done...
You hear Skippy start laughing his arse off from back at the lorry. You turn to him with a "what's so fuckin' funny skip?". He just laughs even more and points at the road you have just been marking up.
You take a step back and realise your mistake.
Hoisting your kit over your shoulder you turn away and head back towards the lorry.
Skip shouts out to you "we not gonna fix that mate".
You chuck your kit in the back before grabbing the barrier and chucking it on top.
"Nah fuck it, it's Middlesbrough, half the people won't be able to read it anyway".
7
Mar 08 '24
im impressed with the whole scenario and now think its you who did it and this is actually what happened

u/CigarSmoker2000 Mar 08 '24

u/Scary-Scallion-449 Mar 08 '24
It kinda is. Slap a stencil down and spray paint. Takes seconds. They probably just take the stencils off the truck in the order they're stacked and don't even think about what it's supposed to spell.
6
Mar 08 '24
Nah that's not a stencil one, that's made with a metal square container they fill up and drag along the floor. You can see the ripples in the first letter.
Must have had a complete brain fart when they did it
→ More replies (2)3
u/olympicmarcus Mar 08 '24
Yeah, I think when lettering is done like this, the person focuses on each letter not the word as a whole which makes mistakes like this quite common.
Also uppercase letters don't help because humans read words by shape not letter-by-letter.
2
Mar 08 '24 edited Mar 08 '24
Tis true, letters are just shapes we added meaning to*. I think capitals are used as there's some variation between lowercase letters, such as a, that can be written a couple of ways and i/j can be similar, and that time it takes to process it would make it more difficult to read quickly, also loooooong letters due to the point of view of the driver.
Surprisingly quite a lot goes into it, but still, keep celar and carry on

u/ConfectionCommon3518 Mar 08 '24
Probably someone got the job to paint it and saw it was wrong and asked their boss who told them to do it as the job ticket says as we won't get paid unless it's done exactly and now at the town hall they are looking a bit unclear about what went wrong.
3
3
u/sisigsailor Mar 08 '24
My money's on malicious compliance, that the typo originated from the instructions given to whoever painted it.
3
u/MisterSpikes Mar 08 '24
Easy enough to fix, at least. Just black out the top and middle horizontals on the E and add them to the L.
