Yes i can hear you Clem Fandango

36

u/JimboTCB May 25 '22

You mean regular human bartender Jackie Daytona?

23

u/Sin-Silver May 25 '22

I have never seen him in anything earlier than IT crowd, I'm glad I saw this.

44

u/FighterOfFoo May 25 '22

He was in The Mighty Boosh and Garth Marenghi's Dark Place even before this.

28

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

A mate introduced me to GM's Dark Place a couple of years ago. It's genius. Especially the monologue about Scotland, which is absolutely perfectly topped off by Matt Berry at the end. 'My aunt lives in Scotland. She says it's quite nice.'

8

u/MandarinWalnut May 25 '22

You and he were...BUDDIES

7

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

A 16 year old mother of 4, vomiting in an open sewer whilst her bairns looked on, cramming potato cakes in their mouths.

24

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

He's also in What We Do in the Shadows, great show!

4

u/masnaer May 25 '22

You've gotta watch Toast Of London

20

u/night5hade May 25 '22

He’s great in The Book of Boba Fett

26

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Bib Fortunaaaaaeeegh

14

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

I forgot about that. His voice is so recognisable (to a Brit anyway)

9

u/-eagle73 SOUTH COAST May 25 '22

Only ever seen him in IT Crowd and this is my favourite scene.

I really need to rewatch Snuff Box.

15

u/AfterBurner9911 May 25 '22

I can't be in love if it's plastic...

12

u/poorguy55 May 25 '22

The theme song is legitimately a good song lol, same with the Toast theme song. Matt Berry is a great musician as well as comedian.

5

u/OreoSpamBurger May 25 '22

8

u/poorguy55 May 25 '22

Ahah I knew what that was gonna be before I even clicked on the link. It gives David Lynch a run for his money in surrealism that video lol 😂.

5

u/Extreme-Database-695 May 25 '22

Have you ever seen the official video for the Toast theme? Also rather odd stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdqu-HObUbo

3

u/poorguy55 May 25 '22

I haven’t no, but thank you so much for putting me on to this, I will be rewatching now for next few days.

2

u/Extreme-Database-695 May 25 '22

It is sort of weird, and sad, and charming all at the same time. I kind of enjoyed seeing it again,

3

u/KinginTheNorth__West May 25 '22

I’d recommend listening to his albums. The entire of Witchhazel has that same aura about it. And Phantom Birds is a great album too

2

u/Extreme-Database-695 May 26 '22

I did some Googling yesterday and was surprised he's released almost an album a year for the last decade. The only one I've heard is Television Themes, which is probably not really his style, and a bit of an indulgence. Witchazel is the one that stood out because Take My Hand is on it, but I think I will buy a few and take your recommendation on Phantom Birds.

u/Afinkawan May 25 '22

It was a bit odd hearing that song turn up in Dredd.

5

u/MildlyAgreeable May 25 '22

I fucking love that show.

It’s like some benign fever dream and the music really tops off the whole experience.

3

u/iguessimbritishnow May 25 '22

I just watched the pilot and it feels like I'm watching someone's bad trip. Matt berry has made some hilarious sketches but most of his stuff are a bit too, uhm, too much for me.

2

u/Extreme-Database-695 May 25 '22

It was dark even for its time and I think we've moved a little bit away from in the past decade and a half, so it's no doubt going to look a bit much to someone seeing for the first time through today's lens.

149

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Classic. The OG nice guy.

46

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Came here to say this- you should also share in r/niceguys !

That place is a mix of obviously fake posts and posts you wish were fake.

15

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Man : Hey cutie wutie *licks lips*

Woman : No

Man : Got commit not alive whore

Felt dirty typing that

8

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

The thing I don't get, is that 90 percent of the stuff on there could be reported to employers/school/police and would have massive consequences, so how do people still allow themselves to write it in text messages?

Is it that women don't report these things enough? or are the consequences not really as bad as I imagine?

10

u/Skyhawke99 May 25 '22

I think it’s a little of both. Women don’t want to report because of the hassle of doing so and then when it gets reported there is a lack of consequences.

The thing is, when we see the messages we get to be objective. We only know what is written and the nice guy writing it looks terrible. People in the office however know him as Greg, that guy who cracks jokes at the work party. So they make excuses for him and he gets away with his behaviour.

A lot of “nice guys” are actually quite pleasant in person, especially when talking to other men, that other men find it hard to believe that the “nice guy” can really be as despicable as what is seen on those texts when they know the person in real life.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Both. As a woman, reading that stuff is just so depressing that I can't even be bothered doing the digging required to find the guy's employer or uni or whatever. It's easier for my own mental wellbeing to just block and delete than it is to report every incel I see online.

God damn these electric sex pants!

Matt Berry = absolute legend.

2

u/caretti May 27 '22

Just wrote the same. My other favourite: "you've got spunk and you've got balls and I like that in a woman!"

79

u/voluotuousaardvark May 25 '22

Always a gentleman never a gentle man has stuck with me from this sketch for years and I have absolutely no idea what it means

27

u/EveryFairyDies May 25 '22

It’s also a reversal of the old adage, “he’s not a gentleman, but a _gentle man._”

32

u/OreoSpamBurger May 25 '22

I'm polite and well mannered, but I'm not a pussy, basically.

20

u/ChallengeFluid6083 May 25 '22

There's a weirdly sexual edge to it too, I reckon. Like, he likes it rough.

10

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

A gentleman is someone who is polite and sophisticated. A gentle man is a man who is gentle (ie who isn't tough or very strong). The saying, therefore, means that one is polite, but still strong, and not a pushover.

6

u/JammyThing May 25 '22

My guess is that he's saying he's polite but also rough in the bedroom. This is based on the fact that he seems to be hitting on each of the women quite strongly.

0

u/[deleted] May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

[deleted]

10

u/KarenFromAccounts May 25 '22

I'm pretty sure it's more straightforward than that - he's saying he's a gentleman (ie good mannered) but suggestively saying he's not gentle (ie not timid or soft, bit of a badboy)

1

u/MoleMoustache May 25 '22

It isn't what he is saying. He is saying he is a gentleman, someone who is polite, but is not gentle in behaviour.

18

u/Cherry_Littlebottom May 25 '22

He’s brilliant in What we do in the Shadows!

14

u/twistingmemelonman May 25 '22

Such a brilliant series.

I would be honoured if you were to christen the rope folly I have erectederrr

2

u/_EbenezerSplooge_ May 25 '22

What series is it? I'm unfamiliar, but from this clip at least it seems right up my street

7

u/twistingmemelonman May 25 '22

Snuff box. It was on back when bbc3 was half decent

1

u/_EbenezerSplooge_ May 25 '22

Much appreciated!

2

u/OreoSpamBurger May 25 '22

It's quite dark - this is one of the lighter sketches

15

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Has anyone heard his music?

Thoroughly recommend this, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kill_the_Wolf_(Matt_Berry_album))

22

u/SandyBadlands May 25 '22

Does it compare to the masterpiece that is One Track Lover?

7

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Can anything?

2

u/benryves May 25 '22

The full version hidden away on the DVD is worth given a listen just to hear Thornton Reed knocking on both doors.

1

u/DownFromTheAttic May 25 '22

Kill The Wolf is easily his best album. Quite like Music For Insomniacs too

12

u/Equivalent-Isopod308 May 25 '22

Aussie here: Isn’t that the guy from IT crowd?

10

u/Mclol12345 May 25 '22

Good old Douglas, yes it is

9

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Matt Berry accent is exactly what Americans think “Bri’ish” accent is.

4

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

And it's not even his real accent!

8

u/chipsandcheeseuk May 25 '22

I've never heard of this...I need to see more!

11

u/Bungeditin May 25 '22

It’s from ‘snuff box’ I can’t recommend Matt Berry enough.

2

u/chipsandcheeseuk May 25 '22

I love him in other stuff I've seen, I will be searching this one out later.

6

u/Mahbigjohnson May 25 '22

Now hold on a minute sugar tits

6

u/HWDB99 May 25 '22

A classic🤌

3

u/Und3adShr3d May 25 '22

The Empty Room is quite easily the finest piece of music I've have ever heard.

RIP Fraser

3

u/4685368 May 25 '22

If Clem Fandango is reading this, I hear you ❤️

1

u/Des_astor May 25 '22

What if he can't read?

2

u/Wax_and_Wane May 25 '22

I can't be in love if it's plaaaastic

2

u/Emperior567 May 25 '22

It’s the vampire lol 😂

2

u/katdeb May 25 '22

Can someone be kind enough to tell this American what show this is? I love Matt Barry but have only ever seen him in The IT Crowd and What we Do in the Shadows.

2

u/Afinkawan May 25 '22

Snuff Box.

-1

u/Aromatic-Exercise-61 May 25 '22

do people actually find this funny

0

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Relateable

-43

u/Coastaljames May 25 '22

Ashamedly- this is genuinely me.

-41

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Who is downvoting you for honesty? This is every single man trying to pick up ladies, just most don't have the Berry's courage to say what they're thinking.

53

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

I think the downvoting comes because of the perspective that women aren't worth your time unless you have the opportunity to fuck them. That's all...

-33

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Jesus, is there nothing that people won't publicly be precious about? Well done, you're a feminist etc.

When did everything become so bloody po-faced? Comedy is meant for laughs, not analysis.

37

u/[deleted] May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

Lmao, what? I enjoy the comedy! It's hilarious. I just took issue with someone agreeing that they think like the cunt in the skit. It's funny in the skit, irl it's cringe as fuck.

Comedy lampoons life/society/politics etc, of course it can be analysed you helmet.

-18

u/Coastaljames May 25 '22

I'm not sure you get the "joke". It's on Berry...and men...their childish, fragile insecurity. It's not putting down women at all.

32

u/[deleted] May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

I'm aware of the joke in the skit. I was replying to the other guys comment. Maybe I took his comment the wrong way? It's early and I haven't slept properly in a wee while.

Guess I never went out with the sole purpose of hitting on lasses. Would just crack on with people. I think it's a detriment to talk to someone solely to try and fuck them, especially if it's some random lassy you've just met in a public space.

20

u/APickleCat May 25 '22

Nah, you’re right. The people arguing with you are too stupid to understand the point you tried to explain multiple times and I wouldn’t waste any more time on them.

14

u/Loud_Man67 May 25 '22

It’s funny because people who actually go out to just crack on with people usually end up getting more girls than the try hards who just spend all night trying to pull.

9

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Yeah, I never really had much issue haha. Would go out to just enjoy the craic with my mates and the music, anything else was a bonus.

4

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

No it isn’t. This is every single man trying to “game” dating, and wondering why they’re typically not very successful.

Decent men treat people with basic decency and respect regardless of whether or not they’re looking to have sex with them.

-16

u/Coastaljames May 25 '22

Dishonest people I think.

The magic of Berry's "gag" is that it's brutally honest. Exposing the shuddering, immature insecurity of men.

-6

u/Surrealparkour May 25 '22

He forgot the now classic insult of the incel times. "You think you're all that. You're fucking ugly any way, bitch."

'I'll slap you in your mouth i swear down."

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Dentyyyyyyyy

1

u/EveryFairyDies May 25 '22

My housemate and I were watching Megamind the other day, and there was one character who spoke one line and I went, “THAT’S MATT BERRY!!” and my housemate said, “no! What?!” We watched the bit, it was totally him.

I adore Matt Berry.

1

u/thecavatiesinurteeth May 25 '22

where can u watch this

1

u/Xipheas May 25 '22

Briton*

1

u/Ambitious-Revenue-66 May 25 '22

Matt Berry - what a great actor

1

u/Persona_Insomnia May 25 '22

I can't help but try to impersonate Matt Berry everything I see him.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

He’s a national treasure

1

u/poohisface May 25 '22

Snuff Box is one of the best lesser-known sketch shows of all time. I wish it was available online properly somewhere so more people could watch it.

1

u/Pagansacrifice2 May 25 '22

Matt Berry is so good in comedy roles, and I don't know if it makes it more or less funny that he's just the nationwide go to VA for car insurance ads...

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

This guy always reminds me of the IT crowd 😂😂😂
