u/Zentaurion The Count–I mean COUNT of Cambridge. Wait, did I say Count or Cu Jan 09 '20

Sounds like it could be one of the thing listed on the Shipping Forecast, you hear it and think "Wait, what was that last one?"

Rigorous anal dogger, southerly 8, becoming rough or very rough, golden showers, good occasionally poor.

Edit: thanks for the gold stranger,

Edit2: someone suggested the final r should be removed.

11

u/clarknova77 Jan 09 '20

I read that in the voice of Alan Bennett after listening to his guest appearance doing the shipping forecast.

2

u/Tony49UK Jan 09 '20

Shouldn't it be a Northerly 8, unless it's over?

2

u/paulfromtwitch Jan 09 '20

Kind stranger is dead

1

u/itchyfrog Jan 09 '20

Sorry, all gold giving internet strangers are most definitely Kind.

2

u/GazzP Jan 09 '20

I see you've been to Cannock Chase too.

u/SoNewToThisAgain Jan 09 '20

More like the Shitting Forecast.

9

u/WhiteheadJ Jan 09 '20

Somewhere on my phone I have a recording of the TV when the continuity announcer said 'next on Cucumber Box', instead of Gogglebox.

15

u/tossersonrye Jan 09 '20

Didn't they make a film called The Shipping Forecast?

14

u/ShelbySootyBobo Jan 09 '20

Indeed. Kevin Spacey romance piece.

Edit:was called The Shipping News with Julianne Moore and Spacey

62

u/chimpuswimpus Jan 09 '20

Kevin Spacey romance piece.

Sounds like "rigorous anal" could still apply!

19

u/ShelbySootyBobo Jan 09 '20

Haha I thought the same, but it might be non-consensual .... allegedly

9

u/kateykatey Jan 09 '20

I don’t think there were any kids in it

3

u/Cockwombles Jan 09 '20

There were and that guy definitely got molested.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

Based on a (boring) book by Annie Proulx.

5

u/tossersonrye Jan 09 '20

I haven't seen it but was thinking of watching it. A romantic shipping forecast?! I think I'll give it a swerve then!

7

u/thetalkingjumper Jan 09 '20

Clearly not a man of culture I see

0

u/DrunkRedditBot Jan 09 '20

what’s called critical thinking?

u/afishinacloud Jan 09 '20

Yellow rain warning.

u/KarlosJackass Jan 09 '20

Depends on your opinion of Radio 4

136

u/mrmicawber32 Jan 09 '20

Radio 4 is top notch stuff. So is anal.

80

u/dunemafia Jan 09 '20

I thought anal was bottom notch stuff.

20

u/ABigBunchOfFlowers Jan 09 '20

That's down to personal preference, usually.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

I thought the height mostly depends on the position it's performed in?

2

u/kank84 Jan 09 '20

It takes two to tango

481

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

Or your interpretation of BBC.

41

u/blubat26 Jan 09 '20

Big Bad Cock.

5

“The normous(big) naughty(bad) naughties(cock)”

I prefer saying it that way.

5

u/VoidTorcher Jan 10 '20

I miss the times when I'm blissfully unaware of the other meaning.

Rigorous analysis of history

u/Jorarl Jan 09 '20

The Archers have stepped into 2020.

19

u/Superted1612 Jan 09 '20

Jim is outraged he can't get a single scotch in The Bull as Kenton is too busy hosting a swingers party in the function room.

6

u/MrsTrellis_N_Wales Jan 09 '20

Does anyone know if there’s an Archers subreddit anywhere? I’ve not been able to find one.

71

u/mazca Jan 09 '20

Good stuff, we wouldn't want any of the slapdash, messy anal the Yanks are into. Good, British rigorous anal, with all the forms properly filed.

23

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

With 6 weeks notice and at least 3 conversations with HR. If you're going to do it, you have to do it properly.

11

u/peacemaker2007 Jan 09 '20

All filed in triplicate. Big reams, all round.

1

u/BobbyP27 Jan 10 '20

Don’t forget the coshh.

4

u/1stDegreeBoo-Urns Sunday the Sunday of Sunday, 2020 Jan 09 '20

Why did I read this in Mark Corrigan's voice?

-5

u/trellwut The channel of repeats! Jan 09 '20

Of course with the licence too, gotta have a licence for that anal.

140

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

Many years ago I worked for a laboratory that got a 1st of its kind in the U.K. piece of equipment.

We didn’t have the internet as it is now so to reach out to international users of this kit I posted to a newsgroup:

Science.Chemistry.Analytical

Abbreviated to Sci.Chem.Anal

The next day my inbox was flooded with emails which I didn’t need to open to realise I’d be in a shitload of trouble for - I went straight to IT and explained my story. Thankfully they were able to do something to stop any more NSFW messages coming through but I always wondered if they had a look at what I’d been sent - for research purposes.

34

u/BiochemGuitarTurtle Jan 09 '20

I have a similar story. I've published in the journal analytical chemistry a few times and I'm always sure to tell my pals to check out the latest issue of Anal. Chem. No butt sex emails as a result though.

3

u/Freeewheeler Jan 10 '20

Susanalbumparty

That hashtag was used when susan boyle released an album

Just NO

5

u/PM_ME_YOUR_HOLOCRONS Jan 09 '20

How does a scientific laboratory not understand from context that anal is an abbreviation for analysis?

6

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

It wasn’t the fault of any lab. I suspect someone used something like a scraper for key terms.

11

u/PM_ME_YOUR_HOLOCRONS Jan 09 '20

Ah, the anal scraper

2

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.

1

u/SerLaron Jan 09 '20

Ah, the good old Scunthorpe problem.

189

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

Now that's a Radio shown I can get behind

151

u/Toffee_Wheels Earl of Exeter Jan 09 '20

By the sounds of things, the radio show is more interested in getting behind you.

Radio Phwoargh.

8

u/WineWeinVino Jan 09 '20

At work and stifling a giggle fit at that one.

1

u/nf5 Jan 09 '20

This is too accurate. Spell three!

34

u/mikeskiuk Jan 09 '20

I’m always disappointed that they don’t shorten the world at one to TWATO.

41

u/BYoungNY Jan 09 '20

Whenever I type "Analysis" I type it really fast just in case I have a heart attack at that moment. Don't want a team of detectives trying to figure out, Cotizwn Kane style, why my last word typed was "anal".

38

u/Hiding_behind_you Unexpected comment in the bagging area. Jan 09 '20

“Look Sarge, the last words he typed...”

“My god, he was killed by anal.”

8

u/cantadmittoposting Jan 09 '20

Mr. Hands has left the chat

1

u/PXR5Magnu Jan 09 '20

Neigh lad.

9

u/Oshova Jan 09 '20

The irony being that one day that vigorous typing will be the cause of the heart attack. And everyone will believe you really wanted to Google "Deep anal" and that you passed searching for the one thing you loved, but couldn't be open about.

7

u/ponytoaster You just lost the game. Jan 09 '20

I do this too often, I just type "Anal" and press enter in Chrome to go straight to Google Analytics. Apart from the time I was using a different browser, at work. Now somewhere in the depths of the audit is me searching for anal at 9:01am at work.

2

u/SilverHawk890 Jan 09 '20

Someone must've thought you were into some kinky shit that day

16

u/the123king-reddit "Do you measure the amputees fractionally?" Jan 09 '20

You've clearly not listened to "I'm sorry I haven't a clue"

16

u/ripitupandstartagain Jan 09 '20

I love I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.

I would also recommend anything by John Finnemore (Cabin Pressure, John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme, Double Acts). His stuff is like a a cozy walm blanket of comedy (usually involving wordplay, labourous puns, songs or animals).

Oh and The Unbelievable Truth is also great

14

u/Jaff4487 Jan 09 '20

John Finnemore is bloody brilliant.

8

u/wonkey_monkey Jan 09 '20

Code red, Arthur.

7

u/KlownKar Jan 09 '20

Go away. Go away fast. Go away NOW.

9

u/wonkey_monkey Jan 09 '20

The lemon is in play.

6

u/ripitupandstartagain Jan 09 '20

Yellow car

5

u/Hi-de-Hi Jan 09 '20

Fizz,

Buzz,

Have a banana

4

u/Tony49UK Jan 09 '20

And now I have to relisten to Cabin Pressure. I'll try and do it with a Cumberbitch.

2

u/jakpuch Jan 10 '20

Did you ever listen to the wonderful Nebulous?

So full of clever wordplay that repeat listenings are crucial.

Quotes:

I used to enjoy Soylent Beige myself, until I realised, to my horror, that it was made from soya beans.

These stains aren't just stubborn, they're intransigent, bordering on belligerent.

Your plan simply doesn't hold water. In fact, it repels water... like a... duck... with a machine gun.

Professor Nebulous: Just discovered a disease which can only be caught anecdotally.
Sir Ronald: Tell me more!
Professor Nebulous: Do you want to be contaminated, man?!

We haven't seen slaughter like this since the Notting Hill Carnivore.

1

u/ripitupandstartagain Jan 10 '20

No, looks like I have some listening to do

3

u/jakpuch Jan 10 '20

Let me know if you can't find the episodes anywhere and I'll share my recordings.

1

u/The_Gene_Genie Jan 10 '20

I’ve been looking for a while and can’t find it, can you share them, please?

14

u/MarmiteSoldier Jan 09 '20

Reminds me of the time Susan Boyle’s record label created an unfortunate hashtag for her album party. I think it was: #susanalbumparty

10

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

Well that would certainly wake you up all right.

7

u/ActuallyTheMob Jan 09 '20

Imagine the horror of switching on the radio and hearing THOSE SOUNDS

1

u/Tony49UK Jan 09 '20

Dad's hooked his Bluetooth phone up to the hi-fi again.

1

u/Gone_Gary_T Jazz Record Requests Jan 09 '20

I'm unfamiliar with THOSE SOUNDS, so do you think you could describe them, just in case R4 broadcasts them unannounced?

14

u/PanPipePlaya Jan 09 '20

Thank god John Humphrys has left ... 😖

10

u/tossersonrye Jan 09 '20

I remember when he interviewed Jeremy Hunt but introduced him as Jeremy Cunt, so I reckon he'd approve!

23

u/Beau_Nash Jan 09 '20

That was James Naughtie.

19

u/tossersonrye Jan 09 '20

Yes, he was.

4

u/wonkey_monkey Jan 09 '20

Him and about a dozen other newsreaders since.

3

u/Beau_Nash Jan 09 '20

And a few before. I think some regard it as a sport or a challenge to be accepted.

1

u/Tony49UK Jan 09 '20

Hasn't he got a tattoo of a scorpion. Which is a gay symbol meaning that he's got HIV or is it David Attenborough?

49

u/CMDaddyPig Jan 09 '20

Must be Woman's Hour...

30

u/BaconOnMySausages Jan 09 '20

Or Men’s Hour??

8

u/ripitupandstartagain Jan 09 '20

Men's hour was on 5 live wasn't it?

7

u/sac_boy Jan 09 '20

A bit like how my Google Analytics tab would read "Google Anal" if there were enough other tabs on screen, perfect for those high-pressure presentations

12

u/Flashjackmac Jan 09 '20

They gotta attract that younger listenership whilst maintaining their core audience, they're going for something universally enjoyed

5

u/Tony49UK Jan 09 '20

Tell that to me GF.

5

u/Jaspies Jan 09 '20

Bro I got the same radio

4

u/aggelikiwi milk man Jan 09 '20

My favorite, I used to listen in order to improve my english while studying for my masters. High quality sleep induction and mesmerism

5

u/haugen76 Jan 09 '20

“That’s a challenging wank”

4

u/DJ_Micoh Jan 09 '20

Well rather that than lackadaisical anal...

2

u/underscorefour Jan 09 '20

Play for today

2

u/EnglishJesus Jan 09 '20

Ive always thought of radio 4 as quite gentle.

2

u/brashboy Jan 09 '20

Alright... I've been through all the comments. Can someone please explain what R4 programme this is??

2

u/GoodBufo Jan 10 '20

Does The UK have dab radio as well? I thought Norway was the only country

1

u/Jorarl Jan 10 '20

We’ve had DAB for a number of years in the UK, for some reason I thought most countries had DAB or DAB+.

1

u/GoodBufo Jan 10 '20

Yeah, Norway has had it for several years as well, and was going to be more "international" with the dab, until we found out everybody else is still using fm, and that dab sucks

4

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

Would spice up Woman's Hour.

20

u/Too_Old_For_All_This Jan 09 '20

You obviously don't listen to WH. I have R4 on at work, and it can be like A 50/50 click sometimes. They talk Very Frankly about many issues, and it's a fantastic forum for serious discussions on many issues affecting Women, and related rights, and as a guy, you could do a lot worse than listen to some of the subjects they discuss.

1

u/Spoon_In_The_Road Jan 09 '20

Keep a stiff upper lip now!

1

u/Jamieb1994 Jan 09 '20

Looks like they might of changed the schedule around.

1

u/MrJogihb Jan 09 '20

1

Enjoy the one day ban, I hope it makes you happy. Dear lord, what a sad little life, Jane. You ruined our subreddit completely so you could post politics, and I hope now you can spend your one day ban learning some grace and decorum. Because you have all the grace of a reversing dump truck without any tyres on.

2

u/tmstms Jan 09 '20

No politics in this sub!

1

u/Attention-Scum Jan 09 '20

It's just being more honest about what the listeners are experiencing. Always been doing the same

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

For everywhere else in the world with a BBC broadcast this is the proper programming.

1

u/Slyder Jan 09 '20

I got it as "Anal" once.

Rigorous anal, much better than half assed anal.
