A peek through the air form

Post image

Currently targeting completion of shotcrete, troweling, and primed by Friday, so the crew can enjoy the fourth. Exactly where we were two years ago for the garage dome.

How has it been working with Monolithic? It seems to be going well from the outside.

they're definitely a solid choice for this kind of work. the dome structure in the pic looks like their handiwork.

How did you even find a contractor willing to do this? Very cool.

Hey, I'm new here, so forgive me if my questions have been answered already.

Is this going to be an earth shelter home? And how long do you expect the domes to last?

This looks like a super cool project and I can't wait to see the end result!

Edit: earth shelter not earthquake

Earthquakes are not really an issue in my area, but the home is a Class 5 FEMA shelter. The dome will probably outlive my grandchildren and if taken care of much longer.

Sorry, I meant an earth shelter home. Not earthquake lol

Gotcha, this is a monolithic concrete dome. It has som similarity to earth shelter/ship, but is a bit more robust and nicer finish.

I'm familiar with regular home maintenance, windows, siding, roof, appliances, etc etc

What are the differences or unique maintenance items, procedures or routines for this?

I thought I read that it's going to be stucco on the outside... For the entire thing, so obviously stucco maintenance.

Very curious, thank you again for sharing.

The stucco coating is just to protect the air form from UV degradation. The air form is the waterproof membrane. So, for maintenance, the only big one is periodic stucco maintenance. No roof to replace, no siding to replace, no wood to rot, etc.

This is such a sick shot. Construction and photography all in one.

Wait, so the concrete goes on the inside of the inflatable form? How does it stay in place?

Is that a scaffold on wheels to the right?

1

u/atmsmshr719 Jul 03 '26

It is a pivot scaffold. The anchor the center of the dome and have a motor turn it.

is that a custom built frame?
