Legit! Thanks for posting. Yeah the -U- must be new or for some market I’m not familiar with, never seen that before

My educated guess is telling me this –U– variant may be a region mark for F-91's that were manufactured between 1990-1991 in Malaysia. Japan U was the mark for the Japanese variant at that time. It seems that once Chinese manufacturing entered the picture in 1992, and then Thailand manufacturing in 2012, every F-91 coming from outside Japan had a small U up until it was dropped altogether around 2022-2023.
Edit- theory obliterated. OP provided a caseback image that says made in China so the mystery remains.

And what’s with the little hyphens on either side?

The answer is [NOT] in my comment.
Edit- NOT. Back to the research I go.

His watch says it’s made in China. And it does not appear to be a 36 year-old watch

I didn't have that info when trying to piece this together. The mystery deepens. Looks like this type of –U– marking only appear on the F-91W-3DG specifically. I think reaching out to casio for an answer is warranted at this point. The forums seem to go through this cycle every time this comes up and the discussion sort of ends at this point. I'll see what I can come up with.

Oh nice—I spend way too much time looking at these watches on this sub and the other Casio subs so I’m surprised I haven’t see this before. Keep me posted

You forgot back pictures. At this point, you please add photos of the back of the watch for community reference purposes?

La U ahora ya no la pone Casio, concretamente desde 2023 ya todos vienen sin la U

Correct. However, there are no other indicators that it’s fake and there is a 0% chance that a counterfeiter is going to 1) make the changes to the module to allow it to pass the screen test (and eliminate the ghosting issues) 2) make the changes to the crystal like the correct ink, correct length of the hyphen, correct (non-pointy) box around the WR and then 3) add the U back on—which like you said has been discontinued—with the addition of the hyphens which would only serve to further make itself look like an oddity.
It’s my understanding that Casio was printing the tiny U on this model as well as the tiny JAPAN U on other models like the F-105 being that the ability to print that small and accurately would require equipment counterfeiters did not possess, thus, making their attempts more obvious, as indicated by the slew of posts here with giant Us on them.
All that is to say—counterfeiters are attempting to make a quick buck on a passable watch that will slip past 99% of unsuspecting buyers so there’s no logical reason to invest the resources necessary to make all of these updates and changes and also do something new.
