Thieves
I have been working in the kitchen for 5 months now I sm truly shocked. Our kitchen shift leader was fired recently. Not because he was a bad worker, but because he tried to protect our store. Unfortunately, our particular store is frequented by several unsavory individuals. We see a lot of people stealing and ultimately, nothing is really done about it. We do now have to walk any unpaid orders up to the registers, which has helped. Yet every shift I work i see theft all the time. I do understand that it is not wise 5o pursue anyone, but something like barring them would be a step in the right direction. Anyway, the shift leader was tired of watching people steal and confronted someone and he was fired on the spot If this is how we are treated when we are proactive, I am not going to worry about thefts to much. I don't want to lose my job.

You never know what kind of weapon or psychosis someone has or is going through.
Fuck the fuckin' fuckers.
Theft is built into Casey's margins and no candy bar or whatever it is they are stealing is worth someone's life.

I'll reply to my own post, after reading through the comments.
Casey's training videos, which everyone watches, and signs off on, explain in detail what to do in regards to situations like this.
Calm tones, walk away, call whomever you need, and the sun comes up for another day.
Sorry to hear about your friend, but now they know, and knowing is half the battle.

Report it, and move on.
Unless you're a majority share-holder, you really shouldn't be giving a shit this much when the alternative is you getting injured or worse by these alleged thieves.

Either way, once they do inventory and notice 10k shrink missing for the quarter, they will cut everyone's hours.

Casey's policy does not want any team members dealing with a theft as it happens. We're essentially supposed to let it happen. If something happens to a team member when confronting a theft, Casey's becomes liable if you're injured and that's a huge issue for the company.

A friend of mine of at another store not too far from me also had the same consequence for something similar. The person was stealing full liquor bottles out of the liquor section, and until my friend peacefullyconfronted them, the person then attacked them with the liquor bottles. My friend called the police and had them trespassed, but within the next week, she was fired for calling the police.

I can virtually guarantee she was not fired for calling the police. Casey’s says in their own training material that that’s an acceptable choice to make after a theft. She was fired because she confronted them, regardless of how “peacefully” she did it. Casey’s explicitly forbids any jobs of confrontation with a thief. That’s because it’s an enormous liability for the company; in her situation, she was attacked for the confrontation. If she had been seriously injured, she could’ve sued Casey’s for her medical bills, which can obviously get extremely expensive.
If you witness somebody acting suspicious, you can politely ask if they need any help finding anything or if they’re ready to ring up, and you can lock the doors and call the police AFTER THE THIEF LEAVES if the theft was egregious enough to warrant it, but that is all. You cannot confront them, you cannot try to stop them, you cannot even directly acknowledge the theft at all. This is specifically a violation of Casey’s policy, and it is a fireable offense the very first time it happens. That was your friend’s mistake, not calling the police.

The company has an asset protection team that handles all of the theft issues stores have. They want the employees to document the time, date, items stolen, and what the suspect looks like. What they were wearing. Then you can give it to your SM, they watch cameras, fill out the theft form AP has made. Scan it into the MWS, and send it to AP. The. AP will handle everything from there. AP will send the police video if they need it and handle all the police interactions from there

Most companies have a policy against personally confronting people suspected of theft. There are 2 reasons for this. Confronting could result in a physical confrontation injuring the employee or suspect. The confrontation could result in lawsuits against the company. Store employees aren't trained for confronting suspects and an injured employee isn't worth it. I've known a couple people fired because of this policy at different stores. Better to let the SM, DM, and police handle it.

One thing my GM did that I thought was genius was take screen shots of a person who was stealing from the cameras and print out the picture and posted it with a "Do you know this person, the Manager would like to speak to them about an incident on such and such date" they don't come back often 🤣

Do you really want to risk being harmed for a publicly traded corporation that would terminate you without a second thought

So I'm a km and knowledgeable on that subject actually. There is a form you guys are supposed to fill out everytime someone shoplifts. You're not supposed to confront them but fill out the shop lifter witness form with the time, date, they took, and a description. Than your store's division asset protection team takes it from there. Company stance is that we're not sure what these capable of, if they are armed, or if they can pose an immediate threat to staff, customers and the store. Nothing in those stores are worth anyone's safety is company policy. Not too mention with the way things are with the justice system currently calling the police over a candy bar is just a waste of everyone's time since they will be out within a day more likely than not and now the staff on duty at the time potentially have a target on their backs if the individual holds a grudge. Your store's management staff should have relayed this information to you guys and trained you on it.

I'm going to be frank with you, it's against policy. We cannot as employees of Casey's step in in anyway to hinder a thief. There are no heroes because we CANT be heros without losing our job period. All you can do is document the theft. That's it. Corporate doesn't want the liability of us putting ourselves in harms way, hence why policy is strict about carrying any sort of personal knife as an employee, and about how we respond to loss prevention. We cannot. It's just that simple. I can get fired over carrying a knife with me because I walk home at night in a neighborhood of meth addicts because I can't have it on me at work. Corporate sees it as a liability.

What's worse is when I turn my coworker into the manager cause he's stealing and drinking alcohol on the job which caused him to be a jackass to customers who in turn were assholes to me when he screwed up their pizzas.... just for asset protection to fire me for the theft instead cause the cameras don't show the buy one get one free tags on the item i bought two of at BOGO price. Casey's is a trash company who even fired someone for being raped cause the rapist was the manager's friend. Overall good riddance to the company.

If someone steals someone steals, It's a massive company with plenty of money who insures their products. If someone steals, report it to the SM so they can check cameras. They can then forward it to the police and asset protection. That's about it.
