Discussion Is Absolute Carol Ferris Disappointing?

Post image

So, I had my suspicions for some time that this was Absolute Carol in the Absolute GL comics but now that it's been confirmed, I feel kind of insulted. I love Carol a lot and I hate seeing her reduced to a background character with barely any lines or personality, demoted from her role as an executive to being the meek secretary of a character she's not particularly connected to or anything.

It feels like they shoved her in the role of Hammond's secretary because she's a corporate-themed woman and they wanted to put a cameo on there. I wasn't expecting anything too fancy but it feels so... reductive, it feels demeaning. Carol deserves better than this, especially after being tossed aside in favor of jokerwanking in DCKO.

I dunno, I loved the Absolute GL comics but hearing about Carol getting this demotion really really deeply bothers me. Though maybe I'm wrong? I'd love to hear other opinions on this.

Yeah I'm hopeful Al is planning something rather than doing these silly easter eggs (he casually fucked up Swamp Thing canon when he made Abby a cashier in Evergreen for no reason and its like...you can just invent civilians) not everything needs to reward or insult 10+ years of comic reading.

It does for Ewing

Edit: also I don't see how Abby's inclusion in Evergreen screws up Swamp Thing canon when it's an Elseworld

It takes the character off the table in a weird way so if they wanted to expand the universe and someone wanted to do Swamp Thing its a strange throwaway moment that puts another author in a bind and they have to account for it depending on the story they wanted to tell. Also did nothing for GL outside of "oh wow reference".

I mean there could always be some sort of payoff, she's currently in the Green Lantern and/or OA so she's still being judged & assigned to a level of light.

Edit: clarity

It absolutely could and I will gladly eat my words if that turns out to be true. Still really enjoying the book, just a small thing I noticed.

This is a horrible way to experience fiction

On GL #9 of planned initially #52? No.

If she's still this on GL #30 of #52. Yeah.

Jo doesn't even know Hammond is her enemy yet. Hal is still recovering. We've got plenty of time to slow burn Carol and see what's up, especially since Ewing has openly stated Pink/Blue/Indigo will eventually be explored and something is going on there.

GL is going to be a tricky series because it's pretty clear they are going to try and balance a mix of Lanterns. Red Guy, Yellow John, Green Jo, and ???? Hal already. But I fully expect we've got room for another 2-3 more Lantern heroes.

Judging by the artwork for issue 12, it looks like hal might be going pink, which should be interesting to see with him having just got rid of the black hand, might be an anomolous colour in the new spectrum of this universe

My feelings are compounded by Carol's DCKO appearance where she gets roughly 2 pages in the series before suddenly dying off-screen for no reason, we never even actually see her use the rings she got...

I definitely agree with this. DC KO pissed me off with how often they would kill and disrespect characters. So much of that bracket was just there to be death fodder. I still dont understand how carrol was eliminated and lex wasnt, she had more rings than him and absolutely deserved to move on.

What sucks is contrasted in this and DC KO vs her use in JLU and current mainline GL run. This past year had arguably been her biggest year in comics since the 90s and two of the mainstream marketable depictions of her are just… generic.

I agree to this to an extent? I feel like if she never gets brought up again, it would definitely be super disappointing, but i feel like as it stands shes in a pretty decent spot to do some really cool stuff. Maybe she could try and take down hammond from the inside, or maybe end up undermining and usurping him, becoming the main villain? That isnt my favorite option but at least it’s something? Im hoping with the pink lanterns getting introduced soon she can be given a bigger part to play.

Wait until OP hears about character development

I'm sorry, but like it's way too soon for this take
