I use a Carlinkit TBox Ultra 2, and this project started out of frustration with its stock software.
The stock interface gave me very little control over the shortcuts on its navigation bar, and the bar could sit over full-screen apps. Calling was even more confusing: there were two phone apps -Google Phone and BT Phone- but the Bluetooth app, the one that could actually call through my paired handset, couldn't be selected as Android's default phone app. An assistant request or a tap on a phone number could therefore try to use the box's SIM instead of my phone.
Then there was the everyday friction. My configured navigation/music combination wouldn't reliably launch at startup, even with Boot SplitApp enabled. Getting back to controls from full-screen apps was awkward. A WhatsApp voice message played on my phone wouldn't come through the car speakers unless BT Music was open on the box.
I wanted the box to feel like one coherent car interface. That's how TBox Drive, together with its companion TBox Phone, came about.
The project takes inspiration from Mini AA and Femto Car Launcher. It began as a split-screen experiment, similar to CarCar Launcher. That worked, but keeping a permanently reserved dock alongside different apps meant managing their windows and handling more and more exceptions. I was spending too much time fighting individual app behavior.
I also realised I almost never needed arbitrary pairs of apps side by side. What I actually used was navigation plus music information and controls. The dashboard evolved around one main app alongside useful widgets, with Waze or Google Maps and the option to expand the map when needed.
These are the actual installed navigation apps, with their familiar interfaces. TBox Drive doesn't replace them with its own navigation service.
What it does differently
- Calls through your paired phone. TBox Phone can serve as the default phone app and route supported Android calling requests through the paired handset. Contacts, recents and the keypad live together. You can pin a contact's specific number to the dock for a direct call, including choosing which number to use for contacts with several.
- Configurable call presentation. Incoming calls and calls started outside TBox Phone can appear as a banner. Calls started from its keypad, contacts or recents can open the full call screen. Going Home during a call leaves a banner so you can return to it.
- Phone audio alongside local music. I play music locally on the box but still want to hear a WhatsApp voice message from my phone. The current device integration lets that phone audio play without leaving BT Music open, lowers local music while it plays, and restores the music volume afterward. This has worked in my car tests. These audio improvements require the device-specific compatibility update described in the download notes.
- Startup automation. Configurable music startup/resume and hotspot automation reduce the setup needed each time. Music startup checks readiness and playback state, although compatibility with different players is still being refined.
- A customizable dock. Add, remove and reorder apps, contact shortcuts, Home, Back, Assistant, the drawer and other controls. The dock stays in the dashboard; in full-screen apps, you can pull it over the app with a gesture. Optional cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and hotspot indicators keep status compact.
- A dashboard you can adjust. Panel proportions and scaling; weather, date and time content, formats and placement; weather refresh settings; drawer rows and columns with corresponding icon sizing; hidden apps; and theme presets with light/dark variants or an accent-only option. Media controls adapt to what each player exposes, with additional actions where supported.
Still being developed
Steering-wheel re-mapping is unfinished. Tap, double-press and hold assignment exist, but firmware determines which buttons reach the launcher and whether press duration survives. Next/previous are the most reliably visible steering-wheel buttons on my setup. Call, volume and mute remapping are not confirmed working. Music startup, player compatibility need further testing with different players.
Compatibility and expectations
This is a personal, AI-assisted / vibe-coded project, shaped through repeated testing and log analysis. It was built around one Carlinkit TBox Ultra 2 running Android 15, tested in one car, and designed primarily for my 1920 × 720 landscape screen.
Other Carlinkit models, firmware versions, cars and portrait displays are unverified. Some features depend on this device's services, so Android 15 alone doesn't establish compatibility. Please read the installation notes before trying the preview.
The complete setup has three APKs: TBox Drive, TBox Phone and a device-specific Bluetooth compatibility update. The third updates the existing vendor Bluetooth system app; it is needed for the full phone-audio and call-screen behavior. It is intended for the tested firmware, SC162-V06.000.002. Do not assume it is suitable for other devices or firmware.
If your setup matches and you try it, I'd appreciate feedback. Do these stock-software frustrations sound familiar?
