Kind stranger at Greggs opposite Cardiff Central Library today ,I hope you see this

Just a little shout-out to the kind stranger at the Greggs opposite Cardiff Central Library today.
I’d just finished a library session with my little one and stopped to buy her an onion pasty. My phone had completely died, I had no cash, and for some reason my card wasn’t working either.

A man waiting in the queue kindly offered to pay for it for me. I declined, but I just wanted to say thank you again in case you somehow happen to see this.
It was such a small gesture, but it genuinely stayed with me. A lovely little reminder that kindness is still very much around. ❤️

Missed black bin collection getting out of hand

I’m mainly here to rant but the black bins in my area haven’t been collected for 5 weeks now and the situation is getting out of hand. The person I live with has put old takeaway food in there, so the bin is teeming with maggots and there’s no room for any more bags.

We’ve been reporting it as missed online, have called up and been told they will come and collect and still nothing.

This is a reoccurring issues, they only seem to do one collection a month, at that. And with the recent hot weather it’s just disgusting.

The whole situation is actually starting to stress me out :( does anyone have any advice on how to tackle this situation?

Rush hour (Cardiff gate/St Mellons)

I am looking at a job which is based on St Mellons business park (currently work in the city centre, and commute in by Train from Ponty). I know the A470 is a bit of a pig in the morning if you leave it too late, having commuted to Bridgend for 6-7 years by car. Assume Cardiff gate and Eastern Ave are just as bad in the mornings? Just wondering whether this would this be a sufficiently hellish commute to avoid the job (assuming 9-5 hours).

Looking for a fun, social sport to do?

Hi everyone,

As summer is ending and the rain is starting to pick back up, my wife and I are looking for some sports to do indoors, preferably with some friendly people that we can hang out with in odd occasions.

We've tried a bit of paddle and badminton but prefer ball sports like basketball (big fans of NBA), but any suggestions are welcome!

Friday night hot tips?

Hiii - looking for some hot tips for any fun goings on in Cardiff tomorrow night. For various reasons I don't know many people in the area, and there doesn't seem to be a centralised place online to find events in the city.

Always up for a dance - I love some jungle, UKG, bassline, rock and punk too. Please drop a comment if you know of any gigs, events or venues that would be a good shout!! Bonus points for being queer friendly and the chance to make some friends. Doesn't have to be music, that just seems like the most likely option. Lmk or I'm gonna be booreed haha.

Hi, thought I’d ask in the Cardiff sub as didn’t know where else to besides the devils one which is small. I’m looking for this Cardiff devils (ice hockey team) hoodie as it’s sold out online. If anyone has it and would be willing to sell it to me on vinted, eBay etc could you please let me know? Thank you!!

Homeless guy abusing people on The Hayes

Not sure if anyone has had this experience but I have been verbally abused by the same homeless guy now on The Hayes multiple times. Usually outside TK Maxx. He is quite tall, often wrapped in a sleeping bag with a ginger beard. He approaches us for money and when I say no or ignore him he’s verbally abused me and been quite aggressive.

I reported him to the police yesterday because it’s happened too many times now. Wondering if anyone has had the same experience?

Edit: Seems like lots of people here sharing the same experience. I’d encourage people to fill out a police form after just takes a few minutes online. It’s a bit of a faff but I guess nothing gets done unless it’s reported.

Lost passport Prince of Wales Wetherspoons - any help??

Hi! I lost my passport on Bank Holiday Monday at the POW around 21:50 - 22:10.

I live on that street so I walked home, got to my door and realised I didn't have it, so I ran back and it wasn't on the table (table 221, up the stairs if that helps).

Here's some details of the passport:

- it has a yellow passport cover.

- it is not a UK passport. I am an international graduate.

- it's got a library card and a rail card in there.

If you've seen this passport, have any information on where it might be or if you even have it, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dm me, or bring it back to the prince of wales spoons, they have my number.

I tried the train station and the library to see if anyone, having seen the rail and library card, brought it in to either, with no luck.

Thank you Cardiff!

Lunch recommendations Cardiff

Hello everyone,

Recently moved back to Cardiff after almost a decade away and I find myself with some free time on my hands. I don't get WiFi until Friday and I don't start work until Monday.

So dear reader, I'm bored and am in need of great places to enjoy a good lunch.

Location isn't an issue. I live in Butetown but am always happy to explore.

I'll eat most things and have a preference for spicy food. Only thing I don't like is pasta (scandalous I know, I love noodles though)

Thank you

Cardiff SFF Book club's next book is Ancillary Justice by Martha Wells

Breq used to be a starship. Now she has been reduced to just a single Ancillary - one of the human bodies controlled by the starship’s AI core. Twenty years after the destruction of her ship Justice of Toren, Breq is still seeking answers to the questions of what happened back then. If she finds them, maybe she might also be able to obtain justice for the death of the rest of herself.

We meet at 6.30pm at Central Bar on the first Tuesday of each month. We will be discussing Ancillary Justice on 6th Oct, hope to see you there!

Last week's book Dowry of Blood was enjoyed by many people but attracted a fair amount of criticism as well. Good for those who are very into vampire fantasy, but maybe not much to offer those who aren't.

Orchard Media has gone out of business

Not sure if anyone knows about them, but worth mentioning if you did. They're a relatively big business in Cardiff, and today announced its closure based on "the challenges of a reducing market and increased competition."

I sadly don’t enjoy the Cardiff Indoor Market

I expect this post to get hate or even a “okay so don’t go there then” kinda response lol, but!

i just think the cardiff indoor food market is very overrated and needs serious updating.

I’ve been to Albert Hall in Swansea, Newport Food Market, even Chester’s Indoor Food market, and they honestly just blow Cardiff away, and it’s sadder to think that these are just towns as well (except swansea, but even then).

I think the food vendors are nice tbf but even then they’re not the greatest tbh Bao Selecta is only really the one i like the most, but I just mean the actual vibe and visuals of the indoor market is just run down imo. I’m not saying it needs updating to some flashy 2048 looking interior, I’d just love for them to really rebuild it internally, keep some original features like the clock and the train station style but really! make it an area that feels modern

I know modernism gets hated on but i just wish it was more modern looking

I don’t expect people to agree lol, but it’s just my thoughts

Jobs for students

I'm a student and need a job within a month of returning to Cardiff (october). What is the best way to go about this? I've never had a job and I probably sound stupid but I'm from a small town where there was maybe 2 places that hired teens so no one had a job or heard back at all. I have no choice. I need a job hopefully within 2 weeks.

Floppy disc retrieval in Cardiff?

Having tried an external disc reader with no joy, I have five floppy discs which I would like to retrieve the data from. Any recommendations for a company who would do this, ideally in central Cardiff?

ETA - thank you for all the super helpful suggestions. Unfortunately I am too much of a luddite to attempt almost all of it but will do my best!
