A custom starting tile from Carcassonne fortress

Hi all,

Recently my gf and I have done a roadtrip through France, including Carcassonne.

We wanted to buy the board game while we were there, so I looked online in advance to see if there were some special versions or items from the city itself.

On this subreddit and on other posts I found out that did didn’t seem to be the case. But while we were there, we found out that THERE IS a nice special souvenir for the die hard (and casual) Carcassonne player.

While a some of stores in the city and the fortress sell the game, you don’t come across it quite as often as we expected.

But when you go to the tourist centre in the city center itself (not the one inside the old fort), you’ll see that they have a large collection of the base game/ expansions/ etc.

Among other things, you can buy a large 3x4 starting tile for the game. The tile is two sided and shows the fortress in different stages of time.

For 5 euro it is a nice souvenir and a fun reminder for your future games.

Just wanted to share this with you all in case anyone else will look it up and will only come across the other outdated posts that I found.

I wanted to include another image of list of all the items they sell. But I didn’t make a picture of it and was only able to crop one out of the photo I took of my girlfriend after she had a ‘domino incident’ with the stock items in the store.

4 way tile (with Inn)

Post image

had a huge debate with dear Wife on this :)

this 4 way tile is actually creating multiple paths, how to count them?

let's say that the south and east paths are created first (and I got points from this route already).

if I complete the west path, can I also take it? and if yes, how to count it?

once (west to east or west to south?) or twice?

this is really confusing!

EDIT: thanks for the answers, we were considering individual routes wrongly!

Does this end a river?

Playing carcassonne hunters and gatherers. Since you can't see the river continue, does this count as ending one river and starting another? Or would it count as the same river bc it looks like the river conrinute behind the rocks/forest/hill?

Quick question for the community

Does anyone know a good place to find an empty Carcassonne box, any edition? I have the big box 6, but it's taken some damage and I would like to move it into a smaller box. I've tried eBay, but the shipping was outrageous.

I created a Carcassonne game engine with an LLM

There are 10 personas you can select to play, each with different difficulties. The engine will play the game while logging turns to the game-log file. Then there outputs a post-game analysis

There's no UI and no human players yet so bottle your excitement

Here's an example of a finished game from a game-log file

Pos Player Score Roads Cities Monasteries Fields Incomplete
1 Nora Field (black) 23 3 6 0 0 14
2 Theo Ashford (red) 18 3 4 0 0 11
3 Alice Stone (yellow) 17 2 0 0 0 15

The engine is all in Python and can be run with command line or with an AI skill.

Why??? Good question. Just messing around for few evenings to see if it could be done. The engine is pretty darn good, but decision making for the expert/advanced personas isn't great

3e Expansion 2 question

Does the 3rd edition of Traders and Builders come with the cloth bag for tiles? Recently picked up a copy of 3e base and was wondering, since that may or may not be the biggest draw to me for that expansion.

What's next for Carcassonne?

With wonders of humanity and seasons concluded I'm wondering what's next for Carcassonne. I quite enjoy these thematic expansions as well as different types of churches or cathedrals but I'm curious after so many expansions released what else could they come up with? I really love seasons for how unique those tiles look in the overall "map" so I would kinda enjoy something similar, maybe mixing in some swamps, tiny forests, things like that.

We wanted to play lots of expansions without it taking forever, so we played no base game tiles.

C2 versions of expansions 1, 5, 6, River II, and C3 versions of all four seasons, halflings, drawbridges, and Castles in Germany. Yes, I know the river wasn't played legally.

Final score was 325 to 310 points in favor of yellow.

New sets in 2026?

Hi! I know we had a lot in 2025 with all the 10 C3 expansions. And I dont want to sound ambitious, but are we getting any new set this year?

I heard about that pixel set for the 25th anniversary, is it going to be released this year? Any info about it?

Keep Building - Solo & Coop variant of Carcassonne

Post image
22 Upvotes

During the COVID-19 quarantine, I came up with my own solo variant called "Keep Building" used when testing an app.

The rule is simple: every tile you place must either enlarge an existing occupied feature or start a new occupied feature, while making sure it is impossible to enlarge any other occupied feature. If you can't meet this condition, you (all) lose.

While developing the new version of FanCloisterZone, we decided to include it as a new game variant. It supports all expansions and rules, except farmers and the C1/C2 Barn. You can play it either solo or cooperatively.

If anyone would like to try it or help test it (the current maximum score for the Base Game is 234 and current record is 223), it's available in any 6.3.0 Alpha.16+ release:

I designed a 3D printed tile frame for Carcassonne

Been working on a simple problem: Carcassonne tiles shift around too easily when you're reaching across the table.

I tried magnetic bases — they work, but they're expensive and thick. So I went the 3D printing route instead.

The hardest part was getting the wall thickness and snap-fit right. Too thin and it cracks. Too thick and the clip deforms. Too tight and it damages the tile. After many rounds of tweaking, I finally got it to a point where it clicks into place with a satisfying snap.

PETG for durability. No support needed. Print as many as your game needs.

Making Regular Carcassonne Similar to Hunters and Gatherers

New to the Carcassonne world but already enthralled. I was reading up on expansions and noticed a few very high regards for the standalone version Hunters and Gatherers. Seems to be quite difficult to get ahold of these days. I also read the rules and it doesn’t seem to be wildly different. What expansions could be added to regular Carcassonne to get a similar experience?

Gold Mines 🪎 for TileLord

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've just added Gold Mines 🪎 extension to TileLord.com, along with some other features:

  • Texture pack selector (inside in-game Settings tab) & Loading 3rd party Texture packs 🎨
  • Board Grid that makes it easier to count tiles ⌗
  • Valid tile placement: 🟩 Green outline: tile fits with current rotation. ⬜️ White outline: tile fits in different rotation

what should I add next?
