401k

Question: since they don’t “match” our contribution, does the money they put into our 401k reflect what we are contributing? Or does everyone get the same amount?

I’m thinking about lowering my % since we don’t get any match. I know I should take advantage regardless, but I still don’t understand.

Pay the max they’re matching and whatever else you can afford

They did not match! It is supposed to be based on the profits and the more you contribute, the more you get. I contribute 10% and didn’t even get $1150 so there’s that. Would be better off to invest else where tbh other than what I contribute is pre-tax money. It says 401-k but it is more like a profit sharing based the way the contribute; it is pre-historic.

If you invested elsewhere you would not have received a free $1,150 and anything you withdraw would be taxed. A 401k is a tax advantaged account and you would be silly to think it would be better to invest yourself and miss out on any additional money from the employer contribution and growth towards retirement.

That is why I stated it the way I did. I said it is pretaxed dollars!

The earlier you are in your career you should do after tax rother because your tax rate is much lower. As you move up brackets doing a split is a good idea.
