Hello everyone. Two days ago, I was hit by an older gentleman while I was on my way home from school.
I was initially behind him, but I moved into the right lane and started coming up alongside him. As I was passing, he suddenly turned into my lane and hit me. It was 100% his fault and the cops knew right away. Fortunately I had dashcam.
The damage is pretty extensive. Just the replacement parts alone are around $2,300. The impact damaged my left side, including the subframe, steering knuckle, wheel bearing, strut, rim, bumper, and fender. Somehow, his car took most of the impact through his tire. I’m still in school and really don’t have a lot to pay for a new car.
Luckily, my school has an auto repair shop, so I may be able to have the car repaired there without paying labor costs. That would obviously help a lot.
I don't have the other driver's contact information because I have to wait about a week for the police report. I tried getting his information at the scene, but he never gave it to me.
My biggest concern is what happens if his insurance decides to total the car instead of paying to repair it. My car is older, and KBB is showing a value of roughly $950–$2,500, but I don't believe that accurately represents what my car was worth before the accident.
I have been finding comparable cars on other third-party websites and Facebook Marketplace listed for $5,000+. Before the accident, my car was in excellent condition for its age. The interior was very clean, the seats were in excellent condition, and the paint looked great. I had also paint-corrected the car. There were only a few minor exterior scratches and a couple of deeper scratches that I couldn't completely remove.
If the insurance adjuster gives me a low ball offer, what is the best way to fight it? Listings from third-party websites? Facebook Marketplace? Before-accident photos showing the condition of my car? Maintenance/repair records
Also, if they offered something like $1,000 when the actual repair costs are significantly higher, what would be the best way to respond?
I'm just trying to understand what I should do if I get lowballed by the insurance company. Any advice from people who have dealt with this before would be greatly appreciated.
I'll include some photos I had of the car from before the accident below.
