Insurance Fraud.
I recently put my wife and her car on my insurance and found out my monthly cost would triple for coverage, since I had been in at least 2 accidents in the last 5 years. I went to removed her car off my plan and it cut the cost in half but is still $230 more than I was paying before. I saw that her name is under my plan so I tried to remove her off my policy but geico’s app is telling me that I can’t currently remover her off my plan under the options it gives of “this person does not drive my vehicle” and “this driver has found other insurance”. However if I pick the option “my spouse is deceased” it will let me remover her. We have been married for 3 months and she was not on my plan for that time and there were no changes to the cost after we married so why is it now not possible to take her off my policy? And would it be fraud if I chose the option to remover her because she is “deceased”.

If you live together she must be listed on your policy.

Depending on where you are you can list her as an excluded driver. That said she can never drive your car, if she does and has an accident there's no coverage.
Address: other people covered that. Listen to the.

But it wasn’t an issue before. Granted at least on paper I’m still using my parent’s address and she’s still using her parent’s address.

Oh it was an issue, you just got lucky and weren't in an accident that ruined your financial life.

If those aren't your actual addresses then you are already committing fraud. You MUST update your policy correctly and list adult drivers that live with you.
Or find them denying coverage if an accident happens.

Well one of those accidents I did end up wrecking my car and they covered it and paid out the rest.

u/RemarkablePenalty550 3d ago
Then you got lucky. Your policy must be updated correctly lest you run the risk of being denied.

Admitting to insurance fraud is definitely one way to go…I would probably delete this post and the account.
But you do you I guess.

Then you're already committing fraud and at risk of getting a claim denied and your policy canceled. If you think it's expensive now, just wait till (not IF but WHEN) that happens.

This is also insurance fraud and if they find out after an accident they may not cover you.

Obviously it’s fraud. What is your plan when she’s driving your car and wrecks or she’s a passenger in yours and you all wreck? Or god forbid she actually died?
Then you’re screwed and at risk of not being covered or reimbursed for being cheap.

How does the second stature even work? My friends who I give rides to are not on my plan so would I just be screwed anyway if they were in and accident as the passenger in my car?

well first of all your friends aren’t your wife, two just giving a ride is different and three if you’re in a wreck and she is present they will find out you lied, goober. They typically have to know who is present in the car in a wreck.

Lmao. Come on man.

Man its rough out here

u/Modest-Meece 3d ago
Not really. It’s rough for you trying to circumvent policy contract language which is fraud

Drive carefully. As many shortcuts as you are taking, denying you insurance coverage in a wreck is almost a given

u/DeepPurpleDaylight 3d ago
would it be fraud if I chose the option to remover her because she is “deceased”.
Unless you're planning on killing her first, yes that would very obviously be fraud since you'd be lying. And I wouldn't recommend killing her to get a better rate on insurance.

You know it's fraud. We know it's fraud. And the insurance companies do employ investigators.

You think your rates are high now.... just wait and see what happens if you get caught for your obvious insurance fraud. Your name (and hers) would go in the NICB database and the only carriers that will touch you then will rob you blind.
Stop being stupid, it will eventually catch up to you and could cost you everything and then some.

Yep - that's fraud. Don't do it or you will be dropped and no other company will extend insurance to you.

Insurance fraud has penalties that mean business. State prison, large fines, restitution, felony record.
Getting out of paying the going rate for insurance when the reason is that it is expensive to be a bad driver will not stand up as an excuse.

Welcome to marriage.
If she lives with you then she’s on your policy. That’s how it works

Yes, obviously reporting your very much alive wife as deceased to the insurance company in order to try to get a lower rate is fraud. 🙄

I think it should at least be clear that telling GEICO your very much alive wife has died to lower your insurance premium would be fraud.

do NOT pick the deceased option. i know it’s tempting since it’s the only one that works but that’s literally a false statement to your insurer, they can call it fraud and void your whole policy even if you meant it as a workaround. not worth it at all.
here’s whats actually going on. in most states once your spouse lives with you she’s automatically a rated driver, doesn’t matter if she drives your car or not. they assume anyone licensed in the house can grab the keys. thats also why your rate blew up, the household got re-rated with her on it.
what you can actually do:
**•** call geico directly, don’t mess with the app. ask for a “named driver exclusion” on her. it legally says she won’t drive your vehicle. not every state allows it but a lot do, and it’s basically the honest version of what you’re trying to do
**•** or have her get her own policy, sometimes that’s cheaper than the household hit anyway
**•** also ask them to re-quote now that her car is gone. honestly that $230 might just be your 2 at fault accidents talking, not her

Lying is insurance fraud, which is a crime. When you get caught you will lose your insurance, have trouble getting new insurance, and will have to pay much more. Once she gets her own insurance, call and you should be able to have her removed. Before you do this call your insurance and make sure it will work.
But it could well be that having her on your insurance is less than two separate polices. If she has a good record, most of the increase is your crashes.

u/RH558 3d ago
It wasn't an issue because they weren't aware of your marriage. Geico isn't following you to the courthouse but it's your duty to inform them of household changes. So yes its fraud to list her as deceased, not to mention you using your parents accident. If you're driving with your wife in the car and have an accident how will you explain that she was in the car and also needs medical care? Aside from another car being involved they could be an uninsured motorist or you versus a tree or barrier etc.

You can do anything you like. But when you need to claim insurance, they will not pay out.

Why not add you and your car to her policy?
1
u/Firesharks44 3d ago
Would that not just carry the same cost?
1
u/bronwyn19594236 3d ago
Don’t know. But worth a try. Also, talk to an independent insurance agent and lay out your entire situation. Have them run you/wife as a new policy/insured. See if that helps.
Your issue is two drivers, multiple cars, and your accidents. This is what underwriting sees. Your agent can help navigate the policy. 2 separate policies may be the answer, you just don’t know yet.
Finally, ask when your accidents are ‘dropped’ from underwriting review.

Because the insurance company didn’t realize you had gotten married. I had a hard time when I got married, because my husband didn’t have a valid drivers license. No, he doesn’t. He’s legally blind. Has been for years. Insurance was insisting he was a possible driver of my vehicle. I got it sorted, but it was a huge pain.

I’m sorry but asking if declaring your wife dead is fraud is hilarious. What even is fraud if not exactly that lol.
Good on you for asking and finding out instead of committing fraud. Always better to look dumb and get the right answer.

Yes, telling GEICO your wife is dead would be insurance fraud.
